 The Confession 2

Adrian watched her in silence, the words "Protect me"? hanging between them like an unanswered prayer.

Elena's fingers tightened around the strap of her clutch. Part of her wanted to demand an explanation. The wiser part, the part that had painstakingly rebuilt her life after he left warned her not to believe anything he said.

"You expect me to believe that?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"No," Adrian admitted. "Not yet."

The honesty in his answer caught her off guard.

"I don't expect you to believe me because I say the words. I expect you to judge me by what I do from this moment forward."

She folded her arms across her chest again, using the gesture like armour.

"You've had years to do something."

"I know."

"There it is again." Her eyes flashed with frustration. "You keep saying you know, but you don't."

"I don't know everything you went through," he said quietly. "I only know I caused it."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The fountain continued its gentle song while the breeze carried the scent of roses between them. Somewhere in the distance, laughter drifted from the ballroom, a reminder that life continued as though the two of them weren't standing in the middle of the wreckage of a love that had never truly ended.

Elena looked away first.

"When you disappeared," she said slowly, "I told everyone you were busy." Adrian's chest tightened. "I defended you."

Her voice was steady now, but that steadiness carried more pain than tears ever could.

"I said something important must have happened." She laughed softly, the sound hollow. "Then days became weeks."

Her eyes remained fixed on the fountain.

"Then weeks became months." She swallowed. "My father told me to stop waiting." Adrian lowered his head.

"My mother cried every time she saw me."

Each sentence landed like another stone against his conscience.

"My friends stopped mentioning your name because they didn't know what to say anymore." She finally looked back at him.

"Do you know what hurt the most?" He couldn't answer.

"I started wondering what was wrong with me." His heart clenched. "I kept asking myself what I had done."

"You didn't do anything." Her expression hardened.

"You don't get to tell me that now."

"I have to.

"No." Her voice cracked for the first time.

"You don't get to rewrite my memories because you've come back." Adrian took a careful step closer, not close enough to invade her space.

Just close enough for her to see the sincerity in his eyes.

"I never stopped loving you." She shook her head. "You keep saying that as though love erases absence."

"It doesn't." "It doesn't erase silence."

"I know." "It doesn't erase abandonment." "No." "Then stop using love as your defence." He noded slowly. You're right."

That surprised him, he had expected him to argue. To justify himself.

Instead, he accepted every accusation without trying to escape it. "I don't deserve forgiveness," he said. "I don't deserve another chance." His voice grew quieter.

"But I couldn't keep living with what I did to you."

Elena studied him carefully.

He looked nothing like the confident young man she had fallen in love with years ago.

The Adrian she remembered had always carried himself with effortless certainty.

This man… This man looked like someone who hadn't slept properly in a very long time.

Dark circles rested beneath his eyes.

The small scar near his jaw caught the lantern light again.

Even the expensive suit couldn't hide the exhaustion in the way his shoulders sagged when he thought she wasn't looking.

"What happened to you?" she asked before she could stop herself.

The question surprised both of them. Adrian blinked.

For the first time that evening, hope flickered across his face.

"You noticed." She immediately regretted asking.

"I didn't mean…" "You did." His voice softened.

"You were always the first person to notice when something was wrong." She looked away.

"That was a long time ago."

"It feels like yesterday to me."

"It doesn't to me."

The lie left her lips too quickly. She hated herself for it because every moment with Adrian still lived somewhere inside her, untouched by time.

She remembered the first bouquet of wildflowers he had picked for her because he couldn't afford roses, remembered rainy afternoons sharing one umbrella, late-night phone calls that lasted until sunrise, the way he always reached for her hand without thinking.

Those memories had once been her greatest treasure.

Now they felt like broken glass she couldn't stop picking up.

"You've changed," Adrian said gently.

"So have you."

"I suppose we both had to." Adrian’s smile tugged at the corner of her mouth despite herself.

"It wasn't exactly optional." For one brief second they looked at each other the way they used to. No anger, no resentment, just familiarity. Then the moment vanished.

"I should go," Elena said quietly.

Adrian's heart sank.

"I won't stop you." She nodded.

"Thank you." She turned and began walking toward the terrace.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

She told herself not to look back. Not this time, not again, but halfway up the stone path… She stopped.

Without turning around, she asked,

"If everything you said is true..." Adrian's breath caught.

"...why now?"

The question hung in the cool night air.

The next, I was surrounded by music, laughter, and smiling faces, as though the conversation in the garden had never happened.I slipped the necklace into my clutch before anyone noticed. No one needed to know. Especially not Sophia. She was glowing. Her happiness radiated through the ballroom as she laughed with her fiancé, greeting relatives and thanking guests who had travelled from different cities to celebrate with them.Seeing her smile reminded me why I had come.Tonight wasn't about me. It wasn't about Adrian. It certainly wasn't about the ghosts we'd awakened beneath the stars."Where have you been?"Sophia's voice pulled me back to the present.I

Old Wounds, New ScarsElena POVI escaped the ballroom the first chance I got. The laughter inside had become suffocating, each cheerful voice pressing against the fragile wall of composure I had spent years building. Smiles were easy to fake for strangers even for family, but pretending my heart hadn't nearly stopped the moment I saw Adrian Kane again? That required a strength I wasn't sure I still possessed. The cool night air greeted me like an old friend.I stepped onto the stone terrace and drew a slow, deliberate breath, hoping it would steady the storm raging inside me.Beyond the terrace stretched the estate's gardens, illuminated by lanterns that cast pools of golden light along winding pathways.White roses climbed elegant arches, and a marble fountain stood at the centre, its gentle trickle the only sound that seemed untouched by celebration.Sophia had always loved this place. When they were children, she used to tell me that one day she would get married somewhere that l

The EncounterThe grand ballroom shimmered beneath the glow of crystal chandeliers, their golden light spilling across polished marble floors like liquid sunshine. Fresh white roses, orchids, and cascading ivy adorned every corner of the luxurious venue, filling the air with a delicate fragrance that blended with the soft melody drifting from the string quartet positioned near the centre of the hall.Guests moved gracefully from one conversation to another, their laughter rising above the music in cheerful waves. Waiters dressed in crisp white uniforms navigated through the crowd carrying silver trays filled with sparkling drinks and delicate hors d'oeuvres. Every detail reflected elegance, wealth, and careful planning. It was exactly the kind of event Elena had spent months trying to avoid. She stood outside the entrance, staring at the enormous carved wooden doors that separated her from the celebration inside. Her fingers tightened around the silver clutch in her hand until her knu
