Chapter 13 : Birthday 2

ผู้เขียน: The Fluttering Snow
“You’re right, Tucker. Flynn can’t sit still like an adult for too long. Come on, Nina, let’s go prepare the cake. And could I trouble you to switch off the lights, Tucker?” Ruby asked.

“Of course. It’s time to blow out the candles and the birthday girl shouldn’t do any work,” Tucker said as he noticed Ruby about to get up to help.

“Alright, then. It’s over there.” She pointed out the light switch to him.

“Flynn, be patient, okay? We’ll be having cake in just a moment,” Ruby said to the only child at the party.

“Yes,” Flynn replied, his eyes half-closed with drowsiness.

Tucker turned off the lights and sat beside the birthday girl. In five minutes, Nina and Amber entered with the lit cake, and everyone sang together.

Upstairs, away from the party, a young man cracked open his window. ‘A birthday?’ He watched the partygoers, recognizing everyone but one unfamiliar woman. Chris recalled that Ruby’s birthdays had always troubled him; she would pester him for gifts, which irritated him.

When the song ended, Ruby blew out the candles. The lights turned back on, and she cut the first slice for her mother. Hearing her mother’s blessing, she smiled. After dividing the cake, she set aside three pieces for the neighbors, as planned.

“Take it over now, Ruby. If it gets any later, they’ll all be asleep,” Amber quickly reminded her daughter.

“Want me to go with you, Ruby?” Nina offered right away.

“That sounds good.”

“We’ll be right back. Auntie, Tucker, please enjoy the cake,” Nina said, already aware of her best friend’s worries. People said Ruby had few friends in high school due to her difficult personality, but Nina had always seen her sincerity. Nina also knew about Chris.

“Do you still feel something when you see Chris, Ruby?” Nina asked casually as they walked.

“Maybe a little,” Ruby admitted honestly.

“Well, your houses are right next to each other. There’s no escaping him. I think once your Chris gets married, you’ll finally be able to let go.”

“I suppose so,” Ruby said, sounding unconvinced, as if she still hadn’t come to terms with it.

Nina was the one who pressed the doorbell. Soon, the elderly housemaid hurried over to open the door. The moment Penny saw the cake in Ruby’s hands, she immediately understood why she had come.

“Please come in, Ms. Johnson.”

“Thank you, Penny. I brought a birthday cake for Paula. It’s only eight o’clock, so I thought she wouldn’t be asleep yet.”

“Not yet. Mrs. Simmons and Chris are still watching TV.”

“So could I trouble you to give this to her?” Just hearing Chris’s name already made Ruby feel uneasy.

“Ruby, that’s rude. Give it to her yourself. What are you afraid of?” Nina quickly cut in because she thought her best friend was doing the wrong thing.

“True.”

“I’m Nina Greens, Penny. I’m Ruby’s friend,” Nina quickly introduced herself.

“I agree, Miss Greens. Miss Johnson , you must give it to Miss Simmons with your own hands. That would be proper.”

“Fine, Nina. Come with me then.”

“I won’t. It’s your birthday, Ruby. You should go in by yourself. I’ll just wait outside,” Nina waved her hand at her friend. She didn’t want to step into the suffocating atmosphere, so she chose to stand and wait outside.

So Ruby had to walk into the house alone, carrying the cake box in her hands. Chris saw her first, but he said nothing and acted indifferent, as if he were not surprised at all.

“Hello, Paula, Chris.” She raised her hand to greet them both, though awkwardly, because she was holding the cake box.

“Come in, Ruby. I thought I heard birthday music, and I just learned from Chris that today is your birthday.”

“I only heard the music and saw the lights,” Chris quickly explained, afraid Ruby might think he actually remembered her birthday.

“It really is my birthday, Paula. We just blew out the candles, so I brought some cake for you and Chris. I also saved a piece for Theo. I brought three slices.” She sat down, moved a little closer, and offered the cake box to Paula.

“You are really… Ruby, it’s your birthday, and you didn’t even invite me and my sons. You make us feel like strangers,” Paula scolded lightly.

“I didn’t want to trouble you, Paula. I know you all work so hard, so I didn’t want to disturb you.”

“What are you being so polite for? Ruby, nothing has changed between us. You can always come by just like before, when you used to crawl under the fence to play at my house. Now you don’t need to crawl anymore, just ring the doorbell at the front gate,” Paula told her warmly, then went on to give a long birthday blessing.

“Chris, give Ruby your birthday wishes, too.”

“Uh… sure,” Chris said. Ruby moved to sit close to him.

“May you be happy.” He gave a short blessing.

“Thank you, Chris.”

“Sit on the sofa first, Ruby. I have a gift for you.”

“Um, that’s not necessary, Paula.” She rejected politely but seemed impossible to turn down.

“No, no. Chris, go upstairs and bring me the blue box from the vanity drawer.”

“Yes, Mom.” Chris had no choice but to go up to the second floor as his mother ordered.

While Ruby was inside, in front of Paula’s house, Nina was swatting mosquitoes furiously. If she had known there would be so many, she would have gone inside with Ruby. She had thought it would take only a short while to deliver the birthday cake. But ten minutes had passed, and Ruby still had not come out.

Just then, as Nina waited, the headlights of a car suddenly shone on her face. The front gate opened as if someone had triggered it automatically. A sleek black sedan drove in slowly, passing right by her. The car stopped, then reversed back toward her. The window rolled down, revealing the driver’s face—one that left Nina completely stunned.

“Who are you? How did you get into my house?” Theo asked the girl who was standing alone, swatting at mosquitoes.

“Uh…” Nina scratched her head.

“Are you the new maid? Mom never said anything about hiring another maid.” Theo spoke as if answering his own thoughts. The one mistaken for a maid rolled her eyes to the side. What part of her outfit looked like a maid’s uniform? Or was it just because of the darkness that his eyesight betrayed him?

“Hey, why don’t you answer? Are you mute or something? I asked if you’re the new maid.”

“Yes, I am. It’s my first day at work.” Since he seemed so eager to think she was a maid, Nina decided to play along. She thought it would be fun to tease him.

“Then why are you standing here swatting mosquitoes?”

“I just came from the countryside. I’ve never seen such a big, luxurious house before, so I wanted to breathe in the air of the rich for once.” Nina adjusted her glasses and struck a dreamy pose for him to see.

“You’re crazy.” He shook his head and drove the car into the garage.

“Clara, I have to go now.”“What? Poppy, we’ve only been here for less than an hour.”“It’s really urgent. I’m sorry. You can go watch the movie alone.”“Not buying any clothes then?” Clara asked, noticing her friend wasn’t carrying any new outfits.“No, none of them were to my liking.”“Ah, what a pity. But it’s fine.”“Bye for now.”“Mm.” Clara watched her friend walk away, feeling that Poppy was hiding something from her. She must be secretly seeing someone, but wasn’t ready to reveal it yet, which made her seem so mysterious.'Watching the movie alone should be fine.'She walked to the escalator to go up to the cinema floor. The place was rather empty. The movie she had tickets for wouldn’t start for another half hour, so Clara sat down on a coin-operated massage chair to wait. She closed her eyes and reflected on the earlier events. The image of Trey with that beautiful woman was still stuck in her mind, no matter how she tried to shake it off. Why did it have to be like

Clara arranged to go shopping at the mall with Poppy, since lately she seemed to have something troubling her. No matter how Poppy asked, she never got a real answer.“Thor isn’t coming today, huh? That’s why you invited me to stroll around the mall like this. Usually, I’ve invited you several times and you never agreed to come,” Poppy remarked after seeing her friend at the meeting point.“He said he has some business, Poppy. But it’s kind of good too. Lately, he’s been visiting me too often. It’s fine if he doesn’t come sometimes,” Clara replied.“Don’t you like it when he comes by often?”“Uh… I do like it, but… let’s not talk about it, Poppy.” Just imagining him coming over and the passion in the bedroom made Clara shiver all over. Even though she tried to get used to it, someone like Trey felt far too distant from her. Sometimes she couldn’t help but wonder whether what happened between them was real or if she was just dreaming.“Is Thor stingy, Clara?” Poppy’s question made

He honked the horn loudly when Paul suddenly pulled her into his arms right in front of the condominium entrance.“Mr. Thomas, what are you doing?” she gasped, startled by his embrace and shaken by the blaring horn behind them.“Get out now, Clara. And don’t you dare tell Trey anything about us.” He didn’t answer her question, only fixed his gaze on the entrance. She shook her head at him, but the moment she stepped out of the car, her knees nearly buckled when she realized whose car had honked at Paul earlier.'You’re screwed, Clara…'Trey drove past her, turning toward the rear parking lot. And of course, she had better start preparing a solid explanation. Why did everything have to get this messy?Trey opened the door to his room and found a cold can of beer waiting on the table, along with a few snacks. Clara, who had prepared everything for him, sat quietly and demurely, as if she already knew she was about to be punished.“Are you tired, Mr. Smith? Would you like me to give

Clara had already moved into the new house. Both mother and daughter were satisfied with the rental home that Trey had arranged for them. Deep down, however, the mother still felt uneasy. But with the urgency of finding a place, there had been no other option. After she finished unpacking her things into her new room, Clara went back to her condominium as usual. The next day, she returned to work like normal.“Poppy, what’s wrong? You look a bit down today,” Clara asked her best friend that morning in the department kitchen. For the past few days, Poppy had been acting unusually strange—no longer cheerful as she always was.“It’s nothing, Clara. I’m just tired,” Poppy replied in a weary tone.“If something’s bothering you, you can tell me, Poppy.”“I told you it’s nothing!”“Poppy.”“I’m sorry, Clara. I just want to be alone,” she said, then picked up her coffee cup and walked back to sit at her desk.Clara had no idea what was wrong with her friend. Normally, Poppy had never ra

The big baby greedily nursed her breast. Clara could only sit still, arching her chest for him to enjoy. His large palm cupped her breast while his mouth kept sucking without pause. Clara looked at him and felt embarrassed. Why did he want to act like a baby now? She really couldn’t understand.“Enough, Mr. Smith… mm… you already did so much last night,” she protested, pressing her hand against his mouth.“So much? It was only twice, Clara,” he argued back.“Oh, Mr. Smith, you can’t just drag me to bed all the time.”“Who said I can’t? This is your main duty, Clara,” Trey replied, raising his eyebrows as if to emphasize her role more clearly.“Uh…” she couldn’t argue back and only looked uneasy. Yes, he was right. She had taken money for exactly this. That sorrowful expression made Trey pause. He fastened her bra hook again and sat up beside her.“Wearing that face—do you have something on your mind? You can tell me directly, Clara.” They had been together long enough that Trey

Chloe had been back home for a month, but she couldn’t help worrying about her daughter, even though Clara came by every weekend. Having spent her whole life together with her daughter, the separation left her feeling lonely.“Is Mrs. Brown home? Mrs. Brown!” someone shouted at the front door. Chloe hurried over, curious.“Oh, it’s you, Mrs. Lewis. Is something wrong?” she greeted the tenant in a rush. From his hurried manner, it seemed unlikely that it was anything good.“Come in first. The doorbell’s broken; there’s no sound when you press—”“So that’s why I had to shout. I’m just here to tell you, Mrs. Brown, that I’ve sold this house,” the landlord said cheerfully as he stepped onto the property.“You’ve sold the house already, Mrs. Lewis?!” Unlike the tenant, Chloe’s face drained of color the moment she heard the news.“Yes, Mrs. Brown. See that? I’ve had it on the market for years, and only today did someone finally show interest. I just came to let you know that I’ll have
