Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
Even in a crisis, they would always leave me a little dignity.

"Let her buy it." Zane suddenly spoke. His voice was weak. "Maverick, pay for it from your personal account. The Reynolds family hasn't fallen so far that we can't even afford a handbag for our daughter-in-law."

My hand froze over the tablet.

I looked up at my father-in-law, who seemed to have aged a lifetime overnight.

"Thank you, Dad," I said softly.

Jocelyn sighed. "Dad, Julian Hoffman will be here any minute." She glanced at the Patek Philippe clock on the wall. "If he forces you to hand over the chairman's seal, what are we supposed to do?"

Zane closed his eyes, and his fingers trembled slightly.

The roar of an engine came from outside.

The butler, Adrian White, hurried into the room, sweat covering his forehead. "Mr. Zane, Mr. Hoffman is here."

Maverick stood up and immediately stepped in front of me. "Go upstairs."

His voice was low, and the look in his eyes left no room for argument. "No matter what you hear, don't come out."

I stared at Maverick's tense profile but did not move.

"I haven't finished choosing yet." I waved the tablet in my hand.

Jocelyn took a deep breath, forcing down her temper.

"Yvonne." She walked over and looked down at me. "This isn't the time to be stubborn. Julian is completely insane. He is cold-blooded and ruthless. No one who falls into his hands ever gets away unscathed. If you stay here, you will only become a target."

She reached out, snatched the tablet from my hands, and tossed it onto the sofa.

"Adrian, take Yvonne back to her room." Jocelyn turned to the butler and gave the order.

Adrian walked over and bowed slightly. "Ms. Yvonne, please."

I looked at Jocelyn's stern face and almost laughed. Even when she was angry, she was still protecting me. She was afraid that her little ornament would become a target for their enemies.

I stood up and straightened the hem of my silk robe.

"Fine," I answered calmly and turned toward the sweeping staircase. My heels clicked sharply against the wooden floor.

When I reached the corner of the second floor, I stopped. I looked down through the gaps in the railing as the front doors slowly swung open.

"Zane, it has been a while."

"Julian, you certainly know how to make an entrance."

Jocelyn stared calmly at the man walking through the doors.

Julian was dressed in a silver-gray custom-tailored suit. A pair of gold-rimmed glasses rested on the bridge of his nose, and a polite smile played at the corners of his mouth. He looked like the very definition of a gentleman who was rotten to the core.

He carried a thick manila envelope in one hand. Four heavily built bodyguards followed behind him, their dark suits filling the entrance to the Reynolds family's mansion.

The air seemed to thin instantly.

Julian ignored Jocelyn's sarcasm. He walked straight into the center of the living room, his gaze sweeping over the luxurious rug and the paintings on the walls before finally settling on Zane.

"Zane, you don't look well." Julian's voice was soft, almost as if he were checking on an old friend. "At your age, you really should take better care of yourself."

Zane tightened his grip on the armrests. His knuckles turned white.

"Let us skip the games." His voice was hoarse. "What exactly do you want?"

Julian smiled as he sat down on the main sofa, on the seat that had always belonged to Zane. He crossed his legs, looking relaxed and arrogant. He placed the thick manila envelope gently on the coffee table. Slowly, he pushed it toward Zane.

"Mr. Reynolds, Reynolds Group's cash flow has completely dried up."

Julian adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses before he continued, "Your three overseas acquisitions have come to a complete standstill. The penalties you are paying every day are astronomical."

Jocelyn stepped forward and positioned herself between Julian and Zane. "That is an internal matter of Reynolds Group. It is none of your concern."

"Get what?" Zane suddenly cut Jocelyn off.His face was still pale, but most of his energy had returned. The authority of the man who had led the Reynolds Group for decades had returned with it."The Reynolds family just survived a crisis. Instead of thinking about how to stabilize the company, you're already thinking about buying handbags?"Jocelyn lowered her head awkwardly after being scolded. However, I could see the excitement she was trying to hide.Reynolds Group had not only survived. They had also unexpectedly discovered that the woman they had always dismissed was far more powerful than any of them had imagined. For someone like Jocelyn, who always put the family's interests first, that mattered more than anything."Dad."I gently tugged on Maverick's arm, signaling for him to help his father sit down."Jocelyn really has worked hard for the Reynolds family these past few years. It's just one handbag," I said casually."The boutique manager said another shipment of

"Get the security team inside. Get these pieces of trash out of here."More than a dozen fully armed security guards of the Reynolds family rushed through the doors. They subdued Julian's men in seconds. Two guards hauled Julian to his feet. His face had been pressed against the floor, and his gold-rimmed glasses lay nearby, the lenses cracked into a spiderweb of fractures."Yvonne." Julian was still struggling as he glared at me viciously. "Don't celebrate too soon. You have no idea what will happen to you after crossing the people behind us."I stood up and walked over to him, looking down at the defeated scammer. "I'd love to see which shortsighted group of investors is stupid enough to come after me."I turned toward Maverick. "Hand him over to the police. He forged documents and committed fraud involving tens of billions of dollars. Let him spend the rest of his life inside learning how to use Photoshop.""Let me go!"Julian thrashed like a fish out of water, but the securi

"How can you possibly own them?"Jocelyn and Cecilia looked at me too, their eyes filled with the same disbelief.Of course, they were shocked. In their eyes, I was just a brainless gold digger who spent every day going on shopping sprees. All I cared about was buying rare Hermès pieces and swiping Maverick's black card.I stood up and walked toward Julian. My heels clicked sharply against the floor with every step. "How can I?" I threw his question right back at him."Because when I was buying handbags, I happened to buy out the entire supply chain for Hermès's rare exotic skins."I watched his pupils widen in utter shock. My voice remained perfectly calm. "You all thought I was just shopping?"I turned toward Zane. "Dad, what I was buying was controlling ownership of the mines and supply chains behind the world's top luxury brands. Those three gold mines? They are nothing more than the three least important assets in my portfolio."I looked at Julian, who had gone completel

I sighed helplessly as I picked up my coffee, which had gone slightly cold, and took a small sip.I said slowly, "Mr. Hoffman, you just said those three gold mines are held by the organization behind you. Which organization is that?"Julian froze and looked at me suspiciously. "Why are you asking?""No reason." I set down my coffee cup and pulled my phone from the pocket of my silk robe. "I just want to make sure. You've been using my name to scam people out there. I was wondering if you've been paying me royalties."I unlocked my phone and opened my contacts. Then, I dialed an encrypted number. The phone rang twice before someone answered.A man's voice came through, thick with a heavy foreign accent. "Ms. Smith, how can I help you?"I turned on the speakerphone and set the phone on the coffee table."Leonard." My voice was lazy and casual. "Whose name are the Blackridge Two, Blackridge Three, and Silver Creek gold mines registered under?"The voice on the other end immediate

"Now look at the edge of the terrain in this satellite image." I pointed to an incredibly tiny, jagged edge on the image. "That is a classic Photoshop feathering artifact. Whoever edited this forgot to clean up the leftover pixels."And there's something else."I tossed the file onto the coffee table with a soft thud. "The Blackridge Two mining site at these coordinates was hit by a once-in-a-century landslide last month. The terrain has completely changed."This image was pasted together using satellite data from three years ago, wasn't it? What happened? Are scammers getting lazy these days?"The living room fell silent again. The only sound was the soft hum of the central air conditioner.Jocelyn suddenly lunged toward the coffee table and grabbed the document. She pulled a high-powered magnifying glass from her bag and stared at the exact edge I had pointed out.Cecilia leaned in beside her.Their breathing grew faster.A muscle in Julian's face twitched, but he still manag

The air seemed to freeze.Everyone stood there, stunned, unable to believe what they had just heard.Julian's finger froze over his phone screen. Slowly, he raised his head and stared at me as if I were insane. "What did you say?"His voice was low, with a hint of barely restrained fury.Jocelyn was the first to react. She grabbed my arm so hard that it hurt."Yvonne, have you lost your mind?" She hissed furiously under her breath. "What are you doing at a time like this? Are you trying to get us all killed?"Maverick panicked too and tried to pull me behind him again. "Yvonne, stop it. This has nothing to do with you."I shook off their hands.Still holding my coffee cup, I calmly walked over to the coffee table and set it down beside the stack of so-called certification documents."I'm not crazy, and I'm not causing trouble." I looked straight into Julian's eyes without the slightest hesitation. "I said the watch you're wearing is a cheap fake."I pointed at the watch face.
