Chapter 4

Author: Summer Forest
After breaking up with Yvonne, Jaxon’s life became much harder.

From his very first day at the store, the snobbish, demanding manager, Zach Sullivan, had disliked him and found fault with everything he did.

Zach only backed off when Yvonne openly pursued Jaxon. He no longer dared to push him around as much.

But once Yvonne had fallen for another young college student, Zach had gone back to his old ways.

He purposely made things difficult for Jaxon. He dumped all the dirty work, the heavy lifting, and the most troublesome customers on him.

Jaxon had planned to put up with it just a little longer.

The Celestial Gala was less than two weeks away.

He had a feeling he would complete his mission at the event.

After that, he could finally quit his job at the store.

But Zach kept pushing his luck. He insisted that Jaxon accompany him to a business dinner.

Jaxon had no choice but to drink one glass after another. When he realized something was wrong, he made an excuse to use the restroom.

He hurried into the hallway, where he suddenly heard a familiar voice from the private room next door.

“I’ll drink this one for Yulian. Leave him alone.”

It was Yvonne.

It seemed she had already introduced Yulian to her friends.

Yulian said he wanted some fresh air. As soon as he left, Yvonne’s friends started teasing her.

“Yvonne, your new boyfriend is quite a looker. Is he good in bed? Who’s better at satisfying you, him or Mr. Wilder?”

Another socialite laughed. “Mr. Wilder has to be better. His size is… Whew…”

Yvonne clicked her tongue and turned serious.

“Don’t talk about him like that. Yulian is a decent guy. If any of you make another dirty joke like that, I’ll shut you up myself.”

Everyone knew Yulian was precious to her, so no one dared to tease her about him again.

Outside the door, Jaxon felt as if his whole world had been swallowed by a sandstorm. His mind went blank, and he could barely breathe.

Six months ago, right after he finished rehabilitation, Yvonne had started taking him to social events almost every day.

She had even made him take off his clothes in front of her friends. Then she had ordered him to dance for her, just like the hosts she hired for entertainment.

Whenever he refused, she gave him the cold shoulder. She would stay away from home for days and refuse to answer his calls.

Once, at a party at a villa outside the city, she had dragged him onto the second-floor terrace and ordered him to kneel and kiss the top of her foot.

Her friends were partying by the pool below. They could see every second of his humiliation whenever they looked up.

Over time, those rich young women had started treating him like a servant too. They ordered him around and spoke to him without the slightest respect.

Yvonne had never once stood up for him or scolded her friends for the way they treated him.

She had never even called him a decent guy.

Perhaps, in her eyes, he was no different from the hosts who used their looks to earn her favor.

Never mind. Perhaps this was for the best.

They should never have gotten together in the first place.

Maybe it was better for them to go their separate ways and never cross paths again.

Jaxon lowered his eyes and turned to leave.

Just then, Yvonne said she was going out for some fresh air. She opened the door and came face-to-face with him.

Neither of them said a word.

At that moment, Zach came out and jabbed Jaxon in the forehead with his hand. “You punk! The guests are waiting. Get back in there!”

Yvonne shot Zach a cold look. She instinctively grabbed Jaxon’s hand, ready to defend him.

She was about to speak when a clear, youthful voice broke the silence. “Yvonne, why didn’t you wait for me?”

Yulian hurried over. The moment he saw Yvonne holding Jaxon’s hand, his face darkened.

“Yvonne, you lied to me again! Didn’t you say you’d cut all ties with your ex?”

He had clearly found out who Jaxon was. Unlike the first time they met, he no longer bothered to hide his hostility.

After confronting Yvonne, he shot Jaxon a cold look and stormed toward the elevator without another word.

Yvonne panicked and let go of Jaxon’s hand. She called Yulian’s name and rushed after him without hesitation.

Jaxon even heard her say, “What ex? He was just someone I used to have fun with. Don’t get the wrong idea.”

Someone she used to have fun with.

So that was all he had been to her over the past two years.

He had thought she truly loved him.

But to her, it had all been a game.

Then again, if she had never taken him seriously, why else would she have treated him so carelessly?

Jaxon gave a bitter smile. A dull ache spread through his right wrist.

Zach saw her reaction and lost whatever restraint he had left.

He grabbed Jaxon by the arm and roughly shoved him back into the private room. A cruel smile crossed his face.

“Looks like Ms. Sawyer really dumped you. Heh. I’ll teach you a lesson today!”

Jaxon admitted it without hesitation, and Yvonne froze.“But that was in the past.”His gaze grew distant as he thought back to those long-ago days.“From the moment you brought Yulian to face me and used him to humiliate me, my love for you began to fade little by little, until it was gone.”He turned to Jade, whose face was still pale, and his expression softened.“Now, I want to try loving someone who values me, respects me, and would risk her life to protect me. I want to… see if we can make this work.”“You…”Yvonne felt as if she had been struck by lightning. When she found out you hadn’t gone home and had instead gone to Carpford, she knew something was wrong. She immediately gathered her people and rushed over there.“Mr. Wilder, her feelings for you are genuine. If she makes it through this, could you… could you give her a chance?”Jaxon felt a jumble of emotions. He finally understood that someone had been quietly looking out for him all along. Anna kept her gun trained on the unconscious Linda in the corner.“I was supposed to switch boats in international waters and disappear for good. But after a lifetime of power and luxury, I ended up in your hands. I can’t let that go. There’s no way I can live with that humiliation.”Jaxon stared at her coldly. “What do you want?”Her gaze crawled over his tense face and body. She broke into a revolting grin.“You’re good in a fight, and you’re an excellent shot. But I wonder how much pain you can take.”She spoke slowly and purposely waved the gun.“Take off your clothes. One piece at a time. I want to see what makes you so irresistible to Yvonne.”A chill ran through Jaxon.Anna intended to torture him to death.Linda’s faint breathing pierced his ears like needles. He knew he had to play along.
