The Vigilantes

Severino was tasked to do the most important job anyone in the Siago Mafia Syndicate (SMS) could get. He was told to transport the cargo to the Mafia’s headquarters, Sevendale Club. The Supreme Boss was going to be there and was going to make an announcement.

Everyone from all the six coscas was coming to the party. It would be a great opportunity for Severino to shine. All the bosses would now know his name but if only he would carry out this mission successfully. His dream was to become a consigliere and this mission would be the perfect opportunity for him to get everyone’s attention.

He took the consignment that was locked in a truck and tasked one car to follow the truck while he sat in the car in front of the truck to make sure the roads were clear. The product was extremely important. So important that every man and woman in the party would bid on them. A grand scale auction was supposed to be held.

Everything was running smoothly. There was no law enforcement in sight as the Siago Mafia Syndicate was in the process of owning the city, Aagua. It was their new centre for all the operations. Being in the centre of all coscas, the city had a strategic advantage. The plus point, the police and other law enforcement were highly corrupt.

Severino and his package were halfway to their destination when suddenly the driver of the truck shouted in his walkie-talkie.

“Sir! We are under attack, I repeat, we are under attack.”

“Oh no! Vigilantes! Speed up!” ordered Severino.

The car was running faster than the speed of light. The air on Severino’s face was making it hard for him to see anything. His eyes kept watering, but he had to fire his gun on the streets of Aagua. He was tasked to transport the truck safely and securely under all circumstances.

He could only see four people jumping up and down the truck behind him. No matter how many times he shot at them, or the goons travelling with him, all the bullets just ricocheted and bounced off of the metal of the truck. None of the bullets hit the people dressed in black, head to toe. One could say they were moving like ninjas, but ninjas didn’t exist anymore. Limiri Cosca made sure of that.

Severino’s eyes were on the truck and the jumping vigilantes when his driver shouted, “SIR!! SIR!!!”

“What?” Severino shouted at him.

“That!!” shouted the driver. Severino looked ahead. A slim man was standing before him with a single gun in his hand. What can a person do with one gun with a speeding vehicle coming at them, he had no idea. But the next second the person standing on the street fired a shot.

Severino looked at the sparks out of the gun with widened eyes. Before he could ask the driver to swerve the car, the bullet pierced the windshield, and the driver threw his head back. Severino wanted to swerve the car and the driver did that without even an order.

Maybe the driver acted on his instincts but what was strange was that he was not stopping. The car kept moving in a different direction and then it hit Severino. He looked at the driver and saw the blood oozing out from the middle of his forehead. The driver’s head had a hole in it with blood rushing all over his face. What was the creepiest was his open eyes.

Severino jumped over the driver’s seat to take control of the car, but it was too late, his car hit another one and both cars flipped on the side of the road. Every single vehicle near that surrounding came to a screeching halt after a few of them bumped into each other.

He could not waste any more time. He was lying with his arms under his back and his legs up his head. Groaning with pain, he had to find a way to get out. He had to transport the truck at any cost. For every big party, they had to have an auction. There was a rumour that Tikhon, the Supreme Boss was going to announce his retirement and would announce the list of nominees and repeat all the rules for everyone to follow.

And if Supreme Boss was coming it meant that there would be an auction. He needed his eyes to feast on his products getting sold to the highest bidder. Somehow that was the only thing that gave him pleasure. It was the only joy left in his life. He had lost one daughter and didn’t care for the other one. He called his only living daughter a dud.

His dead daughter was a legend. Everyone knew her as, heeler. A killer who killed with her heels. She was so ferocious and fearless that rumour mill used to say that even the supreme boss was scared of her.

Severino somehow tried to open the driver’s seat door of his toppled car, but the door was pinned to the ground. His only way was either through the windshield or the driver-side door. He had to look at the truck. He had to see if everything was okay.

He heard two loud bangs and hid behind his seat. He glanced at the backseat and now two goons too were dead. “Who is shooting at us? And how that person is so good that he keeps killing people with just one shot?” he shouted. He knew he had to live. Now the only way was out through the windshield before that person could reach him at any moment.

As the windshield already had a big hole in it, it was easy for him to kick it and break it. He pushed the windshield and crawled out of the car. He was injured, he had cuts everywhere, he had hurt his stomach, his face was bruised but he had to power through.

He immediately stood up and hiding from the shooter, ran towards the truck where he saw that the two men inside the truck were dead. Stealthily, he looked at the side of the truck and saw one person in black trying to pry open the lock.

This was his chance. He had to act fast. He opened the driver’s door and jumped inside the truck. The people in black were now shouting and talking to each other about the lock being about to open.

There was no more time to waste. If he wanted respect from Tikhon and recognition from Vittore Venturi, the boss of Fina Cosca, he had to make sure the product he was carrying must get sold in the Auction Ring. He pushed the dead driver to the side and turned the key into the ignition.

“JUMP! JUMP!” shouted one of the persons in black and he saw another one running towards his door in this side mirror. He immediately stepped on gas and the truck zigged and zagged and before people in black would catch up to him, he navigated it out in the mess of a car pile.

For the whole way, Severino didn’t breathe. His heart was about to jump out of his chest due to all the adrenaline flowing in his blood stream. He kept his eyes on the road. He had to complete his mission. He had to transport the product at any cost. He didn’t even care if Vigilantes were following him. He knew the moment he would reach the Sevendale club, he would be safe.

No one dared to enter the Sevendale club if they weren’t a member. It would mean that they were ready to say the world goodbye forever.

He stopped the truck when he was at the venue, Sevendale Club. At first, everything related to the SMS always happened in Siago Slandna but now everything was moving to Aagua. If they had been in Siago Slandna, they would have found out about the vigilantes who were wreaking havoc on SMS’s businesses. Settling in Aagua would take time and money.

Severino shouted to the guards to open the gate and stopped only when he was at the loading bay. He stumbled out of the truck and ordered everyone around, “shut the gate! Shut the gate down! And increase the security. The Vigilantes are coming! The Vigilantes are coming!! Take the people inside now, now, now. Keep the bosses safe. Don’t let anyone get in without the PASSCODE!!!”

He stopped for a minute to catch his breath and finally cut the lock with a bolt cutter as the vigilantes had damaged the lock in their attempt to open it.

The moment he opened the door a lot of young girls and boys gasped and looked at him. Some started crying because they were seeing lights for the first time in so many days. How long they were in the truck, they too had no idea.

Severino stepped aside as the smell from inside the truck was unbearable. It was smelling like sweat, piss, poo, rotten food, and what not. Three goons started waving guns at the young boys and girls and commanding them to get off the truck.

Three kids had died of heat in the truck. After everyone got off the truck, everyone who was capable of walking, another goon drove away the truck. Now, he had to take care of five dead bodies, three kids, and two people whom the vigilantes killed.

After making sure that the abducted, smuggled boys and girls were being washed and fed and getting presentable for auction, Severino ran inside, cleaned himself up, changed his clothes, and went to sit beside his new boss Michelangelo Venturi. He was newly appointed as his bodyguard. But they had known each other for years. Severino’s father, Reau Moretti was Vittore Venturi’s bodyguard.
