Chapter 4

Author: Sunny Hale
"From the very beginning, this has all been your version of events," I said. "If I accused you of being the baby's biological mother, or pointed at some random woman and said she was the mother, wouldn't that make everyone a suspect? If you've got the nerve, then let's do a DNA test."

Theo immediately spoke up in my defense.

"That's right! Do the DNA test! One test will clear everything up."

Shirley's face drained of color. She bit down hard on her lip.

"It's already obvious," she said stiffly. "What's the point of a DNA test?"

I held the baby in my arms. He was fast asleep, his fingers tucked into his mouth. I looked at her coldly.

"Shirley, you've been pushing me nonstop, desperate for me to admit I'm the baby's mother. Now that I'm asking for a scientific test, why are you suddenly so nervous?"

The crowd turned to her, confused.

Shirley's expression shifted instantly.

"Fine. Let's go," she said sharply. "You're the baby's biological mother. There's no doubt about it. I just hope that when the results come out, you'll finally act like a real mother and stop abandoning your own child. That's a crime."

The crowd followed us to a forensic testing center near campus.

While samples were being collected, influencers livestreamed the entire process, filling the air with exaggerated commentary.

They condemned me nonstop, calling me a heartless homewrecker and an unfit mother.

Some people were already looking up how many years I could get in prison.

After all, abandoning a baby was a serious crime. Public disgrace was inevitable. My education would be over, and my future would be completely destroyed.

I was so wronged that I couldn't even speak.

All I could do was wait for the DNA results.

I believed the truth would come out.

After hours of torture, a staff member finally announced flatly, "According to our analysis, the tested infant and Taylor Stevens have a confirmed biological mother and child relationship."

What?

Mother and child?

It felt like a lightning strike straight to my head. My mind went completely blank.

"The evidence is solid. This is conclusive proof! What else do you have to say for yourself?"

Shirley was the first to react, jumping to her feet, her voice trembling with excitement.

"Officer, you all heard that, didn't you? She's the baby's biological mother!"

The crowd erupted instantly. Insults and accusations flew at me, mixed with looks of pure disgust.

"You're disgusting! If you didn't want a child, you shouldn't have given birth!"

"Expel her! The school has to expel someone this immoral!"

"Throw her in jail! Make an example of her!"

The police officer looked at me sternly, his tone heavy.

"The facts are now clear. You must take responsibility for abandoning your baby and accept legal consequences. If you acknowledge your mistake and actively take responsibility for raising the child, a judge may go easy on you."

Theo snatched the report out of their hands, flipping through it in disbelief before shouting at the crowd.

"This report is fake! Taylor just has long hair. He didn't change his gender! How could he possibly be in a mother and child relationship with a baby? The testing center is wrong. You can't trust this!"

The moment he finished speaking, the crowd turned on him.

"This guy's been defending that social climber the whole time. He's obviously involved."

"Expose him! Dox him! Don't let him get away!"

Theo was on the verge of losing control. I grabbed his arm and shook my head.

By now, it was obvious.

I had been turned into someone else's scapegoat.

As for who benefited from all of this…

I looked at Shirley, who was practically glowing with smug satisfaction.

"I just wanted him to have a good family," she sobbed. "Was that wrong? Was I really wrong?"Shirley collapsed into tears, her makeup smeared across her face, making her look pitiful and broken. But by then, no one felt any sympathy for her.For her own selfish ends, she had forged evidence, made false accusations, manipulated public opinion, and even abandoned her own child. The cruelty of it was staggering.Shirley and her mother, who was later located and detained by the police, were taken into criminal custody on suspicion of forging official documents, filing false accusations, child abandonment, and several other serious offenses. Further investigation and trial would follow. As for the baby she had used as a bargaining chip, once the truth came out, the police formally took the child into protective custody. He would be transferred to a child welfare agency and placed according to the law.The farce finally came to an end, with the truth laid bare. The media outlets th

The officer didn't raise his voice, but in the suffocating silence, every critical word carried clearly through the room."Chief, we've confirmed it. A key sampling technician and preliminary report reviewer at the testing center is Shirley Dunn's biological mother. She was responsible for sample collection and participated directly in today's procedure."Internal surveillance also shows that after the samples were collected and before the report was issued, Mrs. Dunn had unauthorized solo access to the materials and performed improper operations."The words were like a bomb going off.Suddenly, everything made sense. Why Shirley had been so fearless, and why a report that was supposed to be strict and scientific had produced something as absurd as a confirmed mother-and-child relationship. From the moment Shirley accused me, this had been a carefully constructed trap, a vicious scheme that exploited maternal sympathy and public pressure to force her own child onto me, someone sh

"Let's set that DNA report aside for a moment."I cut her off gently, genuine confusion threading through my voice."There's something I don't understand. Why are you so invested in this baby? So invested that you were willing to do whatever it took to make sure the child's mother was identified? By your own account, the baby belongs to your boyfriend and another woman. You should be furious. Instead, you've gone out of your way to help. Don't you think it's kinda weird?"I put deliberate emphasis on the words "mother" and "help".Shirley's eyes flickered wildly. She couldn't bring herself to meet my gaze. She turned away in a panic, her voice trembling just enough to give her away." I just believe a child is innocent," she said. "I couldn't stand by and watch a baby be abandoned. That's all. I-It's a matter of doing what's right!""What's right?"I let out a long, thoughtful sound."So in the name of doing what's right," I said, my tone suddenly sharp, "you thought it was ac

I hadn't even had a chance to respond. My father's gaze finally dropped to the baby in my arms. Then he turned sharply, his eyes locking onto the officer in charge."Officer, I'm Emmett Stevens, chairman of Stevens Corporation," he said. "I've seen everything that's been circulating online. My son has been seriously wronged today. I want an explanation."When he said the word "son", he pronounced it slowly and clearly.Stevens Corporation. Emmett Stevens.Who in this city didn't know the chairman of its leading enterprise? Who didn't know his wealth was astronomical, or that he had only one son?Which meant that the so-called female college student accused of abandoning a baby and secretly giving birth…was actually the legitimate heir of Stevens Corporation! The crowd that had been cheering Shirley just moments earlier went pale in an instant. The reporters turned just as white, lowering their cameras without a word."Oh, no, Mr. Stevens. This is all a misunderstanding!"The

The moment the clerk finished speaking, the entire Vital Records Office fell into dead silence.Every single gaze locked onto me."H-He's male?!"The color drained from Shirley's face in an instant. She pointed straight at me. "No way. There's no way!"She suddenly rushed to the counter, slamming her hands down in near hysteria and screaming at the clerk inside."You're lying! Just look at her face. Her hair. Her chest. The way she walks. How could she possibly be a man? She bribed you, didn't she?"The clerk turned livid. She slammed the desk and stood up."Bribed? Young lady, watch your words. This is a government office! Mr. Taylor Stevens's record in the nationwide system clearly states his gender as male. Are you questioning our database, or are you questioning the integrity of law enforcement?!""I-I'm not…"Shirley was completely shut down, left speechless. The crowd erupted into murmurs."A man? He's really a man?""This is insane! How could a man give birth?""

After that, I lowered my head and accepted my fate."The DNA test says I'm the baby's biological mother," I said quietly. "I'll take responsibility."The crowd exploded."She finally admitted she abandoned the baby. See? You have to shove the evidence in her face before she'll shut up."A victorious smile spread across Shirley's face as she nodded again and again."Taylor, I'm glad you chose to be a proper mother."I ignored her. Holding the baby, I turned toward the police and the reporters."Officer. Members of the press. Before you arrest me, I want to register my newborn son's birth."Theo grabbed at his hair, panic written all over his face."Have you lost your mind? You can't just claim someone as your son! Just take your pants off and prove that you're a dude! Showing your manhood would still be better than going to jail!"Show my manhood? Was I supposed to throw away the rest of my life like that?I patted the back of his hand, my gaze steady. "The DNA test is done.
