Elira

“So,” I said quietly. “How are you feeling?”

Ronan glanced up from where he stood near the table, brows pulling together. “What do you mean?”

“I mean,” I said, folding my arms loosely, “you only woke up a couple of hours ago after being unconscious for several days.”

He considered that, then shrugged. “Oh. Yeah. That.”

My heart tightened despite myself.

“I feel fine,” he said. “Normal, even.”

Relief washed through me so fast it made me lightheaded.

“Good,” I said, a little too quickly. Then, softer, “I was very worried about you. Honestly.”

His gaze sharpened—not alarmed, just attentive.

“I don’t know why,” I continued, words spilling now that I’d started. “But when you died—right there, in front of me—” My throat closed briefly. I swallowed and pushed on. “I felt completely devastated. You were in my arms, and I didn’t know what I was going to do.”

The cabin seemed to fade around us.

“I shifted back out of my wolf form and sat next to you,” I said, staring at the floor. “Didn’t

EliraDinner was quiet. Not uncomfortable—just careful. Like we were both aware that saying the wrong thing might crack something fragile we didn’t yet understand.I set the pot back onto the hearth and ladled out what little warmth the vegetables had left to give. Roots, greens, herbs. Plain. Simple. Enough.Ronan took the bowl without comment.“Sorry,” I said. “It’s not much.”“It’s food,” he replied easily. “That’s more than enough.”I nodded and ate anyway, even though my appetite hadn’t fully returned. The cabin felt different tonight—still, but not settled. The fire popped low, struggling more than it should have.I rubbed my hands together absently.Cold crept in slow and insidious, sliding under my skin instead of biting it outright. Not the sharp kind of winter chill—this felt heavier. Deeper.I glanced toward the hearth. The flames were shrinking.“That’s odd,” I murmured. “I just fed it.”Ronan followed my gaze. His expression tightened.“You’re cold,” he said.It wasn’t a

RonanI didn’t realize I’d stopped breathing until she let go of my hands. The glow faded fast—too fast—and suddenly the cabin felt colder, emptier, like something essential had been snatched away the second she pulled back. I stayed exactly where I was, hands still half-raised, fingers buzzing faintly as if the lightning had burned itself into my bones.I could still feel it. That surge. There was no heat, no pain. Just…recognition. When she turned away, grabbed her basket, started talking about the garden like the world hadn’t just tilted on its axis, I let her go. I didn’t stop her. Didn’t follow. But my eyes tracked her every step until the door closed behind her.The silence she left was louder than anything she’d said.My gaze dropped to my hands. Nothing. No glow. No light. Just skin. But the memory of it crawled under my flesh, restless and sharp. She’d been glowing while she talked about my death.About holding me.About telling me to come back. And the moment I touched her—t

RonanThe moment she shifted, I forgot how to breathe.I’d seen wolves my entire life. Hundreds of them. Every color the gods had bothered to invent—silver, ash, bone, dusk, storm. I’d even seen white wolves before. But nothing like this. She stood before me solid and seamless, her fur so purely white it almost hurt to look at—no cream, no yellow, no shadow of warmth anywhere in it. Just moon-bright, snow-born white, like she’d been carved from winter itself instead of born into it.Her head nudged my hand.Soft.Impossibly soft.My fingers sank into her fur without thought, and the contact sent a low, startled awareness through my chest. She leaned into it like it belonged there. Like she’d done this before.I swallowed.“How are you so… white?” The question slipped out before I could stop it. “Even white animals usually have some color in them. A tint. Something.”She just watched me, pale eyes reflecting starlight.Solid. Unbroken.“Alright,” I muttered, dragging my hand back reluc

EliraI didn’t realize how hungry I was until the smell of stew wrapped around me like a memory. My hands were already moving before I made the decision—ladling a bowl for myself, the spoon heavier than it should’ve been. I hadn’t been eating much. Not really. A few bites here and there. Enough to function. Not enough to feel human. Not since Ronan had gone still.I carried the bowl to the table and sat, the wood cool beneath my palms. Steam curled upward, fogging my vision for a moment. I stared into it, heartbeat steady now, body finally noticing its own needs again. My fingers tingled. Not faintly. Not like before.A quiet echo of that sharp, lightning sensation still lived under my skin—along my palm, up my wrist, coiled in my arm like it was waiting.I flexed my hand slowly.Nothing happened.Still, my breath hitched.I hadn’t imagined it. Whatever had passed between us when our skin touched—it had been real. Sudden. Startling. And gods help me—I wanted it again. The realization

Ronan“Yes,” she said simply. “My wolf is white.”The words settled into me like a stone dropped into deep water.White.Brad let out a low whistle. “You haven’t seen it?” he asked me, brows lifting. “I mean, hell—I haven’t seen it either, but it’s kind of strange that you haven’t.”I cut him a sharp look.Undeterred, he kept going. “I mean, it makes sense. Look at her. White skin. White hair. Practically glows in moonlight. Wolves tend to mirror their human side, right? It’s almost obvious if you think about it.”My jaw clenched.“Alright,” Wallace cut in calmly, stepping between us just enough to break the line of sight. “That’s about enough, Brad. Shut your trap before you start losing limbs.”Brad scoffed. “What? I’m just speaking the truth.”Wallace turned on him slowly, expression flat. “Fine. Since I apparently have to spell it out for your dumb ass.”Brad crossed his arms. “Go on.”“Wolves are territorial,” Wallace said.“Yes,” Brad replied, rolling his eyes.“And they don’t t
