Kael

The report is forty pages long, and by page twelve I've read the same paragraph three times.

"Vogan Logistics." My Gamma drops into the chair across from my desk and stretches his legs out. "Operates in eleven human cities and four werewolf territories. Controls the northern freight corridor, half the neutral trade routes, and a warehouse network that's been called the most reliable in the region. Three different Alphas have given her written praise."

SerenaMy hands won't hold still.I dial Dr. Maren's number and miss the first digit. I try again. It rings once."Ms. Vogan." Her voice is calm. It's the calm of someone who has said these words to a lot of frightened parents. "Marlowe is stable. I want you to hear that first.""Stable." My voice cracks on the word. "The message said her fever was over 104.""It peaked and came down. She's awake, she's drinking water, and her heart rate is steady. But it's another episode we can't explain, and I'd like you here for the next examination.""I'm coming. I'm forty minutes up a mountain, but I'm coming.""As quickly as you can. We'll be with her until you arrive."I hang up and stare at the screen. *Forty minutes. Closed road. My car's dead in a freight yard.*I dial the driver. It goes to voicemail. I try Marcus, and the call drops before it rings. I try again, and the line crackles and gives me nothing."The crossin

SerenaThe shelter is smaller on the inside. One bench. One table pushed against the wall. A single bulb hangs from the ceiling, buzzing like it resents us. Rain hammers the tin roof so hard I can barely hear my own breathing.Kael shuts the door behind him and the sound drops to a roar.He doesn't mention what he called me out there. I don't either. I take the end of the bench farthest from the door and pull out my phone, because it's the only thing in this room that feels like mine.*One signal bar. Come on.*"Marcus." I press it to my ear the second it connects. "Tell me where you are.""Halfway down the mountain. We got the radio call about the barrier." His voice crackles. "Are you okay? Is he behaving?""Everyone's fine. How long until the road team clears the crossing?""They're saying five hours.""Of course they are." I rub my forehead. "Pull the loading bay crew back to the station and keep them out of t

SerenaThe Ashgate freight yard smells like diesel, wet gravel, and bad decisions."Eight trucks in the queue," Marcus says, reading from his tablet as we cross the lot. "Two with Blackthorn plates, three with ours, three human contractors who look like they'd rather be anywhere else.""They'll fit right in.""I brought coffee." He lifts a cardboard tray. "For emergencies.""Is this an emergency?""It will be."My technical team trails behind us in matching gray jackets, carrying clipboards and measuring wheels. I've told all four of them the same thing. Stay close, stay professional, and if the Alpha asks anything that isn't about freight, you've never heard of me.*Business only. Three hours, maybe four. Then I go home to my daughter.*A black SUV rolls through the gate. Another follows. Kael steps out of the first one, in dark work clothes this time, no suit, sleeves pushed to his forearms. His Gamma climbs out behind

SerenaDr. Maren doesn't start with the results. She starts with a cup of tea."You look like you haven't sat down since Tuesday," she says, sliding it across the desk."It's Friday.""Then it's been a long week."I wrap both hands around the cup. It's too hot to drink. I hold it anyway.Marlowe is down the hall in the observation room, hooked up to a monitor and bribed into stillness with a tablet and a promise of star crackers. She was discharged two days ago. This morning I brought her back for scans, and I haven't breathed properly since the technician said *the doctor will want to talk to you.*"I'll be direct," Dr. Maren says. She opens a folder, then closes it, as though she's decided she doesn't need it. "We still can't classify what's happening. The scans show her wolf is further along than it should be for a five-year-old. The fevers seem to follow it. Every time her wolf pushes forward, her body overheats.""Pushes f

The girl looks at me. Her eyes are blue-gray, wide, and completely unafraid. She doesn't hide behind her mother's leg. She tilts her head and studies me like I'm a puzzle she hasn't decided to solve."Are you the man from the trucks?"Lysandra closes her eyes for half a second. "Marlowe.""What? Pia said a man from the trucks was coming.""I work with the people who move the trucks," I say. "And some of the ships, too.""The *big ships*?""Very big.""Bigger than the hospital?""About the same.""Wow." She says it like I've told her I own the moon. "Do you get to drive them?""No. I mostly sign papers.""That sounds boring.""It is.""I like drawing better.""I can see that." I nod at the marker on her jaw. "You're wearing some of it."She slaps a hand to her face, smears the purple farther, and looks so betrayed that his Gamma coughs into his fist.Reth hasn't settled. He

SerenaMarlowe has taken over the corner of my office. She was discharged yesterday, with a folder of instructions and a promise to Dr. Maren that she would "rest very hard." Her usual sitter canceled at noon with a stomach bug. So here she is, cross-legged on the rug with a pile of picture books, a tin of markers, and the gray wolf propped against the sofa like a bodyguard."His name is Gus," she announces, to no one in particular."Since when?""Since ten minutes ago. He told me.""Did he say anything else?""He said you work too much." She doesn't look up from her drawing. "And that the snack drawer is empty.""The snack drawer is not empty.""It has *raisins* in it."I press my lips together to keep from laughing and go back to the Ashgate inspection plan. The meeting this morning is still sitting in my chest like a swallowed stone. His voice. The way he looked at my handbag. *Do you have family waiting for yo
