Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
Lyra's words cut through me, and I shut my eyes in despair.

She took my silence as proof she had uncovered the truth. With a wave of her hand, she forced me back into my true form and dragged me to her chambers.

"Hey, wake up. You didn't really think it was over, did you? That little scene earlier was just an appetizer."

I blinked groggily awake to see Lyra standing over me. Her chin was tilted high, and she was brimming with excitement.

A shiver ran through me. My lips parted, but no sound came out.

Sweat beaded along my forehead as I realized the truth—I wasn't just bound, but silenced by a spell.

Lyra smirked at my futile struggle, clearly entertained. She lifted a pale, elegant hand and gestured. "I need two guards here. Since this carp has such a reputation for craving men, I'll let her enjoy herself one last time before she dies. Call it mercy."

The catfolk attendants who had just been rewarded chuckled, flattering her endlessly. "Thank you for the generosity, Your Ladyship!"

An elderly maidservant, watching from the side, couldn't bear it. She stepped forward and said in a trembling voice, "Your Ladyship, she's still His Majesty's consort. This isn't right. You may have his favor, but doing such a thing would be dangerous."

My head was heavy, and my vision blurred. Yet, I turned toward her, gratitude filling my eyes.

Lyra paused and considered, then laughed lightly. "You're right, Mary. Two isn't enough. Make it four. His Majesty won't punish me. Just the other day, he promised me a luminous pearl from the Sea of Dusk as a gift."

Her tone brooked no argument.

My body went cold, and all strength drained out of me.

The four chosen guards stepped forward. Their eyes were gleaming, and their tongues were sliding across their lips as they stared at me like prey.

I could do nothing but clutch my stomach with both hands.

One sneered. "Forgive us. But don't worry, we'll treat you well."

They closed in and then forced themselves on me, crushing me under their weight.

A single tear slipped from the corner of my eye.

I forced myself to block out what they were doing, clinging to one thought over and over—nothing mattered but protecting the child.

With the last scrap of my power, I sealed my womb in a protective spell, holding the life inside steady.

Meanwhile, the whispers of the other maids around me kept seeping into my ears.

"The High Priest said His Majesty would never have an heir. How dare she claim her illegitimate child belongs to him? No wonder Your Ladyship is so furious."

"Exactly. She deserves this."

I didn't know how long it went on, but just when I thought I was about to die, they finally stopped.

Lyra stepped closer, her disdain plain on her face. "Tsk! How filthy. This is the price of infidelity. Do you understand?"

I bit down on my lip, refusing to say a word.

"What's the matter? Still defiant?"

She sneered and slapped me hard across the face, then forced me back into my true form. "Bring me a blade!"

Just as Tharion finished speaking, a troop of men clad in silver armor marched in and dragged them all away.On her way out, Lyra shouted, "I'm innocent!"Meanwhile, I was brought back to Tharion's chambers, where Eldric stayed at my side. I lost count of how many rare medicines he forced down my throat before he finally pulled me back from death's edge."Your Ladyship," he said carefully. "The real reason you recovered so quickly was the half of the primal core His Majesty gave you."The significance of a primal core needed no explanation. In the past, I would have been moved beyond words. But now, all I could think about was the wrongful death of my child.I lowered my gaze to my now flat, lifeless belly, and my eyes burned with silent grief.Just then, Tharion entered. "Serenya, you're awake. Come. Let me avenge you."Silently, I took his hand. I knew the loss wasn't mine alone. He was hurting just as deeply.Only one more month, and he could have declared to the world th

Tharion let out a cold, bitter laugh as he set me down gently. "Get out of my sight! The child in her womb was mine! And you dare claim otherwise after killing my heir with your own hands?"Lyra staggered under the sudden weight of his fury. She clutched her chest, her eyes wide with disbelief. "W-What?"She glanced at me, shrouded in Tharion's primal core, then at him, cradling the stillborn in his hands. His composure was teetering on the edge of collapse.Realization struck, and terror bled into her face."No… Impossible. Absolutely impossible!"She forced herself upright, lips twisting into a desperate smile as she stepped toward him, trying to cling to her old charm. "Your Majesty, you're joking with me, aren't you? The High Priest said you could never sire an heir! He would never lie. Unless… unless this is the Carp Clan's blessing?"But she never reached him. With one strike, Tharion sent her crashing across the chamber. "So you finally understand. Lyra, how dare you cal

Lyra gave a coy smile. She thought Tharion's favor for her had reached such a height that he would overlook even words as reckless as hers.Anyone else daring to say he was childless would have seen their entire clan wiped out.She puffed out her chest with false confidence and pressed on, "So I slapped her a few times to teach her a lesson. But the wench showed no remorse. She even had her maid throw threats at me."Tell me, Your Majesty, how was I supposed to endure that? So, I ordered a few catfolk attendants to tear off her clothes and give her a proper punishment."Tharion pointed at me, lying broken and barely alive on the ground. "Explain to me how exactly you punished her into this state."Lyra laughed lightly, pride flickering in her eyes. "Oh, it wasn't hard. She's just a little carp with weak cultivation."I took the liberty of calling in a few guards to ravage her, then had boiling oil poured over her face. I ruined that delicate beauty of hers so she wouldn't go sedu

Lyra laughed, her snow-white tails swaying happily behind her."Yes, Your Majesty. That consort had the audacity to lie straight to my face. She even demanded that you avenge her, that I should pay with my life. Can you imagine? It's hilarious! Everyone knows you favor me above all. The only mystery is who her lover was—he hasn't dared show himself yet."Tharion froze at her words, a hollow thud echoing in his chest. A terrible premonition swept through him. Step by step, he slowly moved toward me.The air was thick with the stench of blood and my flesh. A few catfolk attendants hurried to block his path. "Your Majesty, the scene is too gruesome. Please don't look. It will only offend your eyes…"Tharion flicked his hand. "Out of my way!"The catfolk attendants collapsed like broken dolls, lifeless in an instant.Everyone flinched into silence, not daring to utter another word. The tension in the air grew unbearably heavy.I lay crumpled in the corner, with not a shred of clothi

The maids around them dropped to their knees the moment Tharion Kael appeared, bowing their heads low in reverence. "Greetings, Your Majesty!"Lyra lit up with delight when she saw he had come to her. She cradled the lifeless fetus in her hands and hurried forward. She dropped to one knee and said sweetly, "Your Majesty, you've come to see me?"How fortunate. I've just discovered a consort in the Forsaken Wing sneaking around with another man. This is the proof of her betrayal."Tharion's imposing face betrayed no emotion. He only glanced at the thing in her hands and frowned. "Someone in the Gilded Chambers dares to be so bold?"As he spoke, a wave of his pressure rippled out, so heavy that several lesser beastfolks in Lyra's chambers coughed up blood under the weight.Startled, Lyra quickly cast a protective barrier around them, sparing them further harm. Then, she rose gracefully, brushing her hand across his chest with a gentle touch."Please, Your Majesty, don't be angry,"

At Lyra's command, someone quickly handed over a gleaming kitchen knife. She clutched me tight, dragging the blade slowly across my body. My protective scales peeled away one by one under the steel. Blood soaked my skin as she smiled with pride, slicing until my flesh was raw and mangled."Next comes the oil, right?" she mused, casting me a sidelong glance. The catfolk attendants obeyed without hesitation, rushing to heat a cauldron of oil until it hissed and sent up waves of scalding steam.Weakness consumed me, as though I were tumbling into a bottomless pit. I couldn't protect the child anymore.I lay in a pool of blood, barely clinging to life as I stared at the boiling oil set before me.Mary gasped and grabbed at Lyra's arm. "My Lady, please, enough!"Two catfolk attendants dragged her back, while Lyra brushed off the plea with a careless wave."Don't fret, Mary. She won't die. I just can't stand that pitiful look on her face, as though the whole world has wronged her. It
