Chapter 5

My eyes slowly opened at the sound of a heavy door creaking open.

The sun light shining into my cell through the small window made me close my eyes again, giving me an instant headache that made me groan.

Soft footsteps forced me to blink through the pain and look past the bars right where I had fallen asleep.

Mina appeared with a tray in her hands, they key of my cell hanging from one of her fingers.

"Hey..." She whispered, barely looking at me as if she was ashamed of keeping a pregnant woman in a cold cell over night.

She balanced the tray on one arm as she opened the door and stepped in.

She placed the tray on the small table while frowning down on the food I didn't dare touch the previous night.

"You should really eat..." She whispered, tucking a red strand behind her ears.

I silently stared at her. My first thought was bolting out the door she had left open, but I could barely push myself to my feet. That would be a sad, failed attempt.

"Have you decided what you're going to do to me?" I asked, my voice low and broken.

Mina's green eyes looked at me with utter curiosity before she shook her head.

"Not yet." She replied, looking away from me once again.

"And you're going to keep me here until you do?" I asked.

Mina stepped closer to me before she leaned down to help me stand. I tried to protest, pushing her hands away. But with the lack of food and water, along with my nonexistent strength, there was no way I was going to be able to resist her for long.

She pulled me to my feet and carefully walked me over to the bed, pushing the tray aside to help me sleep.

Once I was done, she advised me to eat and grabbed the older tray to leave.

"Wait!" I called out, stopping her mid-turn. "Look at me, Mina. Do I really look like I can be a threat to any one of you?" I asked.

She looked at me with pity, the coldness she showed me the previous night no longer in place.

"No." She shook her head. "You alone in your state are not a danger to any one of us. But what you can bring with you is what we're afraid of."

Her explanation only made me realize that they were not going to let me leave any time soon.

"I won't bring anything if you let me go. I'll disappear and never return." I promised, but I doubt she would believe me.

Mina let out a sigh before place the tray on the ground and sitting down next to me.

"Tell me this. How did you find your way to our home?" She asked.

Her question confused me.

"I... Max had brought me here before..." I started, but she shook her head.

"Our pack is not easy to find. Just because you came here once months ago doesn't mean you can find it again with ease." She argued.

I shook my head.

"I don't know what to tell you, Mina. I was running for my life that night. I was looking for a place I could hide. I didn't even know I was coming here."

My explanation didn't seem to satisfy her.

"Okay..." She whispered. "Then tell me one more thing. What happened between you and Maxwell?"

The question burned the wounds of my heartbreak.

"I don't know." I whispered, recalling how angry he looked the previous night, how accusing his eyes had been when he looked at me through the bars.

It was the truth. I didn't know what happened between us. All I knew was that one moment he was my everything, and the next he was nowhere to be found. The hurt I had seen in his eyes had confused me even more.

"Come on, Rose. Give me something better than that." She whispered, looking at me hopefully.

"He just changed." I replied. "I loved him, but he stopped loving me. And he made it clear that he hated me yesterday when he tried to kill me."

Mina frowned once more, looking me in the eyes as if she was trying to figure out if I was telling the truth.

"My goodness..." She whispered as if something had dawned on her. "You... You really don't know why he left you."

It was my turn to frown, confusion drowning me.

"I already told you that." I whispered back.

"Maxwell made it clear that you knew." She said.

"Knew what? What did he say I know?" I asked, but instead of giving me an answer, she shot me another question.

"What do you think your family does for business?"

Her questions were all over the place, and they were managing to confuse me more.

"A small hotel..." I started, but she cut me off.

"No, the other one, The hunting." She specified.

"That's not a business. It's just their hobby..." I replied.

The nod Mina gave me was clear that she had come to a conclusion, but I didn't understand which side she was holding me against.

"I have to go." She said as she stood up, rushing to the door without taking the tray from last night.

"Wait, Mina please..." I tried to bed, but she rushed out, locked the door, and ran out of my line of sight.

I heard her footsteps thundering around the dungeons before the heavy door was slammed shut.

I sat there no knowing what to make of the situation. She asked me a bunch of unrelated questions then ran out like she had figured everything out, leaving me in the cold cell to be punished for the sins I had no knowledge about.

Despite wanting to cry myself to sleep again, I forced myself to eat a little. I didn't have an appetite, but I wasn't just eating for myself.

I ate what little my stomach would allow me and pushed the rest to the side.

I needed to find a way out of this cell, and a plan to get away from this place. I no longer had a single enemy. I wasn't going to be running from my family alone. I was also going to have to run from Maxwell and the community I had once wanted to be apart of.

I belonged no where, and while that broke my heart, I had to push my emotions to the side and think logically.

Maxwell Copper...I don't know why I came to the hospital. Maybe it was because I wanted to make sure that she didn't run away, that the two men standing guard in front of the door were actually doing the job. Or maybe it was the doubt that wouldn't let me sleep that dragged me out here in the middle of the night.Who knows?"We got it handled here, Maxwell. You should go." One of the men commented, but I pretended like I didn't hear them.I couldn't leave even if I wanted to.A part of me wanted to go in there and confront her for real, draw out the truth from her until every lie she had told got exposed. Another part of me wanted to send her away and never have to think of her again. I glanced towards the window and froze when I caught sight of her. She closed the curtains as quickly as she could. I stared at the window for a lot longer than I needed to after she closed the curtain, wondering why fate mated me to a human woman who hunts my kind. She was

Monica's comfort came at a least expected moment, which was why it made it extra special.I didn't understand her last question, but the sympathy I got from her right after was exactly what I needed.Monica let me cry in her shoulders and only pulled away once I was done."Are you hungry?" She asked. "I can make you something. In fact, if you have any cravings, let me know so I can make it for you."I was touched. The sudden change within her made want to cry on her shoulder even more. But I shook my head."The food from earlier is still sitting in my stomach. I'm not hungry right now." I replied."Okay." Monica nodded her head before she stood up.Her eyes moved over my dress before she frowned."You must be so cold. How about I get you a change of clothes? I have a few warm ones that will help." She commented before quickly rushing to the back before I could say no.The truth was, I really could use warmer clothes. And I could use getting the dress off my body, the memory of my moth

Bear was standing outside of the hospital when Silver led me back. I had my chin drop to my chest, looking at the ground.I could feel the man's glare burning a whole on my head, and I dared not look up. "Go back inside. Monika said you didn't finish your food. So eat." Silver commented, his voice a lot softer than I thought it would be.It wasn't like I had any other choice. With my head cast down, I limped past Bear and walked into the front room."Monica was by the shelf, mixing herbs into a bowl when my footsteps caught her attention. She glanced at me over her shoulder before sighing."It's not safe for you to be running around yet. You need to rest, or the herbs you took earlier would be a waste of good medicine." She commented before nodding towards the bed.I didn't give her a response. I hopped on the bed and returned the tray to my legs before continuing to eat.The food had gotten ice cold, indicating the amount of time I took while trying to get away.Monica placed the bo

Rose Alexis...Despite sleeping for a few extra hours, none of my strength returned to me. When Monica shook me awake, I was ready to tell her to let me sleep a little while longer until I remembered where I was."How are you feeling?" Monika asked."Not that great." I replied, my throat sore with each passing word.Monica offered me a glass of water, and I greedily drank every last drop of it and asked for more."I made you something to eat. Hopefully, your appetite is on the better side." She commented as she pulled a silk cloth off a tray and brought the food to me."Thank you." I whispered before I placed the tray on my legs and dug in."You're welcome." Monica replied as she took her white coat off and threw it on the empty chair left by her giant husband."I have to go bring my daughter from the main pack house, but Bear is in the back. So if you need anything, just call out and he'll help you, okay?" She said, already making her way to the front door."Okay."I wat

I couldn't believe what I was hearing."Oh really?" I scoffed. "Is that what she told you? That she knew nothing about the hunting, that the heads of shifters on her walls were just decoration? How could you say that to me?"I could feel my anger rising with each word that fell from my lips, my wolf begging to take control over my body."Calm down..." Silver commented, placing his hand on my shoulder, but I shrugged him off."I'm calm." I snapped before retuning my eyes to Mina. "She managed to fool you too.""I can tell when someone is lying to me, Maxwell, and Rose was not lying when she said she didn't know what I was talking about.""BULLSHIT!" I snapped, pushing myself to my feet with such a force that I managed to knock the chair back."That's enough." Raphael ordered, glaring at me. "You will lower your voice when you speak to my mate." I almost talked back, rage blinding me for a few seconds. I knew I was moments away from blacking out again. Everyone in the office were on ed

Maxwell Copper...I paced back and forth in Raphael's office, my mind running wild.I haven't had a wink of sleep the previous night, my thoughts keeping me awake. I couldn't believe that she really came all the way here, that she was actually in my pack, her presence a threat to my people.I could feel my control slowly slipping through my fingers, my wolf getting agitated with each passing second. "You're making me dizzy." Silver, my twin brother commented. "Sit down already."I leveled him with a glare."Leave me alone." I snapped, the words coming out a lot harsher than I intended them to.Silver merely rolled his eyes, underestimating the pain and confusion I was in.Raphael sighed before pointing at the open seat in front of him."Sit down, Maxwell, and take a breather. You're only riling yourself up by pacing around." He commented.I didn't want to be disrespectful enough to snap at my alpha like I did my twin brother, so I parked myself on the seat next to my brothe
