I could hear voices, but I couldn't open my eyes to see who it was. I couldn't even move my hands to lift them.
"Why isn't she waking up, doc?" An urgent voice was saying. It sounded familiar but she couldn't place it. "You said the bullet went through and through and there was no permanent damage! Why isn't she waking up?"
"You must be patient." A calm, warm voice said. A woman, from the sound of it. "Her body is very frail compared to ours. She can't heal like we can. Human bodies will shut down when the they have been traumatized. Frankly, it's amazing that she survived at all. From my examination I can see that she has been quite abused for many years. She's had many broken bones, fractures, and there are scars all over her back from what looks like a knife and maybe a whip. This woman has been through hell and has survived a bullet to the head on top of it. This one's a survivor. She will wake when she feels safe. So, sit down and make her feel safe, Travis. That's how you can help her heal."
Travis. Now I remembered why his voice sounded familiar. He had been speaking to me before. When I was sleeping. I thought I had dreamed it. His voice had been so soothing as he'd talked to me. I didn't remember what he'd said, but his voice was what I remembered, because I did feel safe.
And then there was a sudden flash of memory. A man carrying me. He'd been blond, with blue eyes and a panicked expression on his face. I had remembered thinking that it was odd that the forest was moving so fast around me and realizing that he was running with me in his arms as if I weighed nothing.
I heard footsteps as the woman left the room. A warm hand took my cold one and I felt soothed. Whoever this Travis was, he did make me feel safe.
I had to open my eyes and see this man. I willed my body to respond. Come on, Lyla. Just open your eyes! It's not like you have to pick up a truck! Open your eyes! To my surprise, my body obeyed. I blinked my eyes as the bright light hit me. My blue eyes tried to adjust to the white tiled ceiling above me.
I turned my head to look at the man that sat in a chair next to me quietly holding my hand. He had been staring at our hands so he hadn't noticed when my eyes had opened, but he certainly noticed when my head turned to look at him. He jumped up and stroked my hair while he grabbed the call button and pressed it.
"You're awake! I thought we'd lost you. How do you feel?" His eyes were so earnest as he stared down at me.
My mouth was so dry, I knew I wouldn't be able to speak. He seemed to understand this and grabbed a plastic cup and filled it with the ice water in the plastic pitcher on the side table before putting a straw into it. He then pushed the button to raise the head of my bed and put the straw to my lips. I gulped the ice cold water down gratefully. When I'd had my fill, he put it back on the table and continued to stroke my hair.
"Where am I?" I croaked. "What hospital am I in?"
You're in the Forest Moon Pack hospital. The doctor has treated you for the bullet wound to your head and for your broken bones."
"Bullet hole?" But then I remembered. Fucking Paul had shot me. Bastard. Well, at least I'd damaged his little jewels before he took me down.
The man beside me burst out laughing and I looked at him sharply, confused.
"Damaged his little jewels! Damn! That is cold! I love it!"
What the hell?! I stiffened and, feeling it, he immediately stopped laughing. "How did you know about that?" I asked him quietly. Although all of my being was screaming at me to trust this man, the fact was that life experiences had taught me that trust was dangerous and just got you killed.
His handsome face actually flushed. Flushed! I don't think I had ever seen a man actually blush before. "Well," He said sheepishly. It was actually kind of adorable.
Stop it, Lyla! Remember what happened the last time you let a guy sweet talk you.
"the guy that you, um, helped decide his future on children, had blood on his crotch and was screaming quite loudly when we came across all of you."
I guess that made sense but, "No, you knew that I was thinking little jewels. I didn't say that out loud and I know I didn't say it in the woods. So, how did you know about that?"
If anything, his face got redder. What was he so embarrassed about?
He sighed and sat on the side of my bed, taking my hand in his. "We have a lot to talk about but first you need to heal. There are things that you need to know about me and about yourself that will be... shocking to you. For right now, please believe me when I tell you that you are completely safe here. Those men won't hurt you again."
I flinched. I didn't mean to, it was just an automatic response. The trauma was going to stay with me I was sure, but right now it was fresh. I still hadn't processed the fact I had been shot in the head yet. I reached up and lightly touched the bandage on my head, wincing at how tender it was.
I put my hand back down and looked at my lap. "Yeah, Paul will find me. If not him then his goons. This isn't the first time he's hurt me, I can't imagine it will be the last." I hated that I was so certain of it, but I was. He would never let me go and while it was nice to get a little reprieve, I knew eventually he would catch up to me.
The man smiled at me. "I am Travis, and I can promise you that Paul and his goons will never come looking for you again. They breathed their last breaths just after he shot you."
JacksonFinishing up the meeting with Travis, I knew it was time to take action. Red Moon needed to be taken down. I had seen the children in Alpha Mya's thoughts. I knew exactly where the children had escaped from. I had known Alpha Edward and Luna Jessica since his father had died and handed the pack to him. His father had been just as cruel but my own father had never been able to directly tie him to any crimes. He was very savvy that way. Alpha Edward, however, was not a smart man. He did everything his Luna told him to do and she was even more shallow and cruel than he was. Their daughter Theresa had been raised to believe that she was above everyone else. They had never taught her the proper respect for other Alpha's or their packs. Knowing how devious these people were, I had been secretly gathering evidence against Theresa for some time. I had pictures of her with many other wolves and they weren't flattering to her. When she had started focusing in on me after Alpha Dane had
Travis"We need to make sure that Lyla is protected." I told Jackson the next day. I had linked him as soon as I had gotten up the next morning after finally agreeing with Midnight about Lyla getting her justice. I would agree with him, but my being there was part of that agreement. "I will always be with mate." He told me sourly. "I would not let her face danger alone." he was insulted that I would even hint at it."I know, bud." I tried to calm him. "I never thought you would. I just want to make sure that if anyone or anything gets past us, we have it covered. We can't risk her."Jackson had been listening to our exchange and he nodded solemnly. "She will have our best warriors with her." He vowed. "She will not face this alone. Midnight is right. She deserves her justice and those women and children deserve an actual life."I blew out a breath, relieved. Of course Jackson would make sure she was safe. He took care of all the members of his pack. He was a great Alpha, worth follow
LylaTravis was fuming. He didn't like me wanting to leave the Forest Moon for any reason, but least of all to get my justice against Julian and his disgusting operation. I stood watching him storm around our little house raving about how I was expected to stay safe and stay there. My arms were crossed over my chest as I calmly watched him rave. When he finally ran out of steam, he sank down into his easy chair with a huff.I crouched beside him and touched his arm. I could feel his body start to calm at my touch. The mate bond always had that affect on both of us. "I know you want to protect me." I told him softly. "But I deserve my justice, isn't that what you said?" I threw his words back at him and he flinched knowing it was true. "Baby, there are so many more girls and little kids that are suffering the way that I did. I can't just let that happen. I have to do something. What kind of person would I be to just ignore that?"I watched his lips press together as he suppressed what
JulianI stood over Liam wrinkling my nose in disgust. I had him thrown into one of my many cells in my basement onto a dirty cot and the smell was atrocious! The women and children in the other cells were backed completely up to the walls in terror. They cowered there with the few children I had in their arms, like they could protect them from me.Not in this lifetime, you little bitches. But right now I had to deal with my pathetic employee. The women, naked and shaking, just whimpered as I stared down at Liam. They knew that if one of my employees was thrown into my dungeon, as I liked to call it, they were there to be tortured and killed. They knew they had failed me somehow.I did this on purpose. I could easily take him to another location and get my answers, but I did it here with these women and children as witnesses so they would know not to step out of line. It had always been the most effective way to keep them all in line. Show them what could happen to them, and they'd do
LylaI was feeling much stronger now and for the last couple of days, Janice had been coming by to get me for walks around the small town. We went to shops and bakeries and boutiques, at one point even the elementary school. I was introduced to everyone in town that happened to walk past us on the cobblestone pathways between the shops and other businesses. The day was sunny and warm and the air smelled sweet. It was a great day for a walk!Janice filled me in on pack gossip and current events going on in the town. Apparantly the high school kids were teaming with another pack's high school to put on a play at the end of the week and the kids were buzzing with excitement. I found myself smiling at everything she was telling me.It felt so right here and I was realizing how happy I had become. As we settled onto benches to eat ice cream cones outside an ice cream shop, Janice told me about her life. Her mate was a man named Carl who was one of the elite warriors for the pack. They had
TravisA meeting had been called. Jackson had called me to what he called a 'private' meeting with the Sun Pack's Alpha, Mya. She had been the Luna of the pack, but her mate had been killed during a border dispute with the Red Moon Pack. No one had gotten all the details of what had happened that night, but we had suspected that the Alpha of the Red Moon Pack had ordered Alpha Dane's murder and presented it as a border dispute. In reality, Jackson had suspected that it was actually over Red Moon's Alpha's daughter who had secretly wanted to be with Alpha Dane but had been overlooked because he'd found his mate in Mya. I certainly believed that they were capable of doing such a horrible thing over such a spoiled girl. Jackson and I had suspected them of many crimes but we'd always lacked the proof to prove it. Theresa was ruthless when it came to something she wanted and if she couldn't have it, well no one could.Mya had almost not survived her mates death, but since they'd had no chi
