Travis

A gunshot. We had heard it while Jackson my Alpha and I were patroling the forest surrounding the south side of the Forest Moon Pack. My wolf, Midnight, surged forward as Axel, Jackson's wolf ran just ahead of me.

"Do you smell that?" Jackson asked me through the link.

"Blood." I said as we ran. But something more.... it smelled like, jasmine and chocolate and the sweetest smelling perfume I'd ever smelled. What is that?

"MATE!" Midnight yelled in my head and took control of my body by zooming past Jackson to follow the scent.

Jackson was stunned until he heard Midnight's thoughts, then he raced with me to find her.

The scene we came upon was not where I ever thought I would find my mate.

There were hulking men standing over her laughing while another one was grabbing his crotch, his pants looked like there was some blood on the front where his hand was holding his genitals gingerly. He was holding a gun at his side.

And my mate was lying in a bloody heap at their feet.

I saw red. Midnight saw red. We launched ourselves at the men who were too busy laughing and  congradulating the man who was holding his crotch for 'killing the bitch', that they didn't see us until I was on top of the first goon and had ripped his head completely off with my teeth and threw it at the other goon who screamed like a child and fell onto his ass, trying to scoot away from me only to back into Axel's huge black paws. He looked slowly up at the beast towering above him and promptly.... wet his pants! I could hear Jackson laughing in my mind.

"Really brave, these ones."

Midnight snorted and then turned to the man still holding his crotch. Now he was pointing the revolver at me. I huffed out a strange, growling laugh at him as if to say, go ahead. Take a shot.

He obliged.

He unloaded his pistol as Midnight just stood there. Oh, we could feel them, but just two seconds later they were already healed so, no damage done.

His eyes widened in disbelief. Yes, that's what I wanted to see. The fear. He was going to feel a lot of that. I advanced on him slowly, my huge paws crushing bracken on the ground the closer I got. He fell on his ass on the ground and tried to scramble away, but for every five scoots he took, one step of mine took me closer than he could back away. Finally, he could go no further as I was literally right on top of him. I put my huge paw over his head. I should just step on it and crush his skull. It was certainly very tempting.

I glanced over at the broken woman again, then back at him.

"Take her!" He cried out. Was he seriously offering me someone else to kill to save his own life? Wow. Just pathetic. "She's nothing! Take her! No one will miss her!"

It was strange how he was talking to me like he knew I could understand him. Maybe he just knew how close to death he was and thought, since I had looked at her and she was bleeding, that I would go for the scent of her blood and he could escape.

I growled at him and lowered my bared teeth to his face. Talking about our mate like that was not going to give him mercy and he was simply too stupid to realize it.

Now he was getting it. It was dawning on his face. He was just about to breathe his last breath and it was going to be a painful and terrifying experience. He curled into a ball like the coward that he was. By this time I was done with this disgusting piece of garbage.

He wept like a baby. Very satisfying.

Behind me, Jackson had shifted and was helping my mate. I wanted to be with her so I decided to dispatch of this pathetic excuse for a man quickly.

His screamed as I ripped his throat out, then he just gurgled. I quickly shifted and ran to my mate.

She was unconscious, an obvious wound to her head. Her long, black hair was matted with blood. Her skin was so pale I feared that she had already died but I could hear her heartbeat. It was faint, but it was there. Even in a filthy nightgown and bruised and bloodied up, she was still gorgeous and I felt my heart rate spike up.

I picked up this tiny woman, noting how light she felt and began to run. We had to get her to the Pack. We had to save her!

Jackson had shifted and was running in his wolf form, allowing Axel to take the lead. He was linking the pack doctor and the warriors to cover everything. He called some of the Omega's to let them know to get some things from my place like extra clothes, toothbrush, anything I would need to stay with this woman in the hospital.

He knew she was my mate. He could sense it and he was making sure we had what we needed for her. That was why I trusted him not only as my Alpha, but as my friend as well.

When we reached Forest Moon, the Doctor Allan, a kindly elderly woman, was already waiting with a gurney and her medical bag with several of her nurses with her. They didn't try to stop me from holding her hand when they wheeled her to the hospital, they just let me run alongside. They knew, just as Jackson had, that me being next to her was the best thing to heal her because of the mate bond, and frankly probably the only reason she was still alive now. Her heart was barely beating, so mine was helping hers to continue to beat.

"Mate must live." Midnight said in a broken voice. "mate must live."

  • The Beta's Heart   The Alpha's Investigation

JacksonFinishing up the meeting with Travis, I knew it was time to take action. Red Moon needed to be taken down. I had seen the children in Alpha Mya's thoughts. I knew exactly where the children had escaped from. I had known Alpha Edward and Luna Jessica since his father had died and handed the pack to him. His father had been just as cruel but my own father had never been able to directly tie him to any crimes. He was very savvy that way. Alpha Edward, however, was not a smart man. He did everything his Luna told him to do and she was even more shallow and cruel than he was. Their daughter Theresa had been raised to believe that she was above everyone else. They had never taught her the proper respect for other Alpha's or their packs. Knowing how devious these people were, I had been secretly gathering evidence against Theresa for some time. I had pictures of her with many other wolves and they weren't flattering to her. When she had started focusing in on me after Alpha Dane had

  • The Beta's Heart   Connecting the Dots

Travis"We need to make sure that Lyla is protected." I told Jackson the next day. I had linked him as soon as I had gotten up the next morning after finally agreeing with Midnight about Lyla getting her justice. I would agree with him, but my being there was part of that agreement. "I will always be with mate." He told me sourly. "I would not let her face danger alone." he was insulted that I would even hint at it."I know, bud." I tried to calm him. "I never thought you would. I just want to make sure that if anyone or anything gets past us, we have it covered. We can't risk her."Jackson had been listening to our exchange and he nodded solemnly. "She will have our best warriors with her." He vowed. "She will not face this alone. Midnight is right. She deserves her justice and those women and children deserve an actual life."I blew out a breath, relieved. Of course Jackson would make sure she was safe. He took care of all the members of his pack. He was a great Alpha, worth follow

  • The Beta's Heart   The Women's Tribunal

LylaTravis was fuming. He didn't like me wanting to leave the Forest Moon for any reason, but least of all to get my justice against Julian and his disgusting operation. I stood watching him storm around our little house raving about how I was expected to stay safe and stay there. My arms were crossed over my chest as I calmly watched him rave. When he finally ran out of steam, he sank down into his easy chair with a huff.I crouched beside him and touched his arm. I could feel his body start to calm at my touch. The mate bond always had that affect on both of us. "I know you want to protect me." I told him softly. "But I deserve my justice, isn't that what you said?" I threw his words back at him and he flinched knowing it was true. "Baby, there are so many more girls and little kids that are suffering the way that I did. I can't just let that happen. I have to do something. What kind of person would I be to just ignore that?"I watched his lips press together as he suppressed what

  • The Beta's Heart   Liam Wakes Up

JulianI stood over Liam wrinkling my nose in disgust. I had him thrown into one of my many cells in my basement onto a dirty cot and the smell was atrocious! The women and children in the other cells were backed completely up to the walls in terror. They cowered there with the few children I had in their arms, like they could protect them from me.Not in this lifetime, you little bitches. But right now I had to deal with my pathetic employee. The women, naked and shaking, just whimpered as I stared down at Liam. They knew that if one of my employees was thrown into my dungeon, as I liked to call it, they were there to be tortured and killed. They knew they had failed me somehow.I did this on purpose. I could easily take him to another location and get my answers, but I did it here with these women and children as witnesses so they would know not to step out of line. It had always been the most effective way to keep them all in line. Show them what could happen to them, and they'd do

  • The Beta's Heart   Lyla's Day Out

LylaI was feeling much stronger now and for the last couple of days, Janice had been coming by to get me for walks around the small town. We went to shops and bakeries and boutiques, at one point even the elementary school. I was introduced to everyone in town that happened to walk past us on the cobblestone pathways between the shops and other businesses. The day was sunny and warm and the air smelled sweet. It was a great day for a walk!Janice filled me in on pack gossip and current events going on in the town. Apparantly the high school kids were teaming with another pack's high school to put on a play at the end of the week and the kids were buzzing with excitement. I found myself smiling at everything she was telling me.It felt so right here and I was realizing how happy I had become. As we settled onto benches to eat ice cream cones outside an ice cream shop, Janice told me about her life. Her mate was a man named Carl who was one of the elite warriors for the pack. They had

  • The Beta's Heart   The Sun Pack's Alpha

TravisA meeting had been called. Jackson had called me to what he called a 'private' meeting with the Sun Pack's Alpha, Mya. She had been the Luna of the pack, but her mate had been killed during a border dispute with the Red Moon Pack. No one had gotten all the details of what had happened that night, but we had suspected that the Alpha of the Red Moon Pack had ordered Alpha Dane's murder and presented it as a border dispute. In reality, Jackson had suspected that it was actually over Red Moon's Alpha's daughter who had secretly wanted to be with Alpha Dane but had been overlooked because he'd found his mate in Mya. I certainly believed that they were capable of doing such a horrible thing over such a spoiled girl. Jackson and I had suspected them of many crimes but we'd always lacked the proof to prove it. Theresa was ruthless when it came to something she wanted and if she couldn't have it, well no one could.Mya had almost not survived her mates death, but since they'd had no chi
