LOGINSelena POV
I trailed behind Cassius, trying to make sense of everything that had just happened.
The Bloodfang pack had forced me out of my home, into the Killianness, just because I was Darius’s fated mate. Wolves patrolled the borders, making sure I couldn’t return. My first night out here had been a nightmare; every sound made me jump, and I still didn’t understand what my life had become.
Seeing Ronan and Killian turn against me hurt the most. They still helped: Killian tossed me a water bottle, Ronan slipped me my favorite knife that knife saved me. I turned it over in my hand, blood still fresh, a strange mix of satisfaction and shock stirring in me. Cassius, sure, I wouldn't turn it on him, left it with me without caring.
Then I saw the wolf Cassius killed for me. Any thought of betraying him vanished. He had protected me, though I knew kindness here in the Emberfang never came free. Watching him fight filled me with hope and envy. If I had my wolf, maybe I could’ve handled it myself.
Cassius’s wolf was massive, strong, alpha through and through. Dark brown fur faded to gray on his legs, and a faint mark on his forehead caught my eye before I looked away. His wolf called to me in a way I couldn’t ignore. Leaving him behind felt wrong.
I wanted distance from the fight, but Cassius ended it faster than I expected. I’d seen Bloodfang wolves spar, but never like this… never a fight to the death.
The dead wolf made me stumble into the bushes, dry heaving. My stomach was empty, my body bruised and sore, and the memory of peeing blood last night didn’t help.
“Hey, are you okay?”
Cassius’s voice cut through my panic, steady and calm. He’d saved me once, and I knew he’d do it again if anyone tried to hurt me.
I turned away from the dead wolf, trying to calm myself. Then I remembered the water Killian had left in the woods. I swirled it in my mouth, spat it out, and finally drank, hoping it would settle my stomach.
“I’m okay,” I said, forcing the words.
Not true. I felt far from okay. My body hurt, and being alone out here was almost like a death sentence for someone like me, someone who couldn’t shift. Darius had known that. His words kept running through my mind: the bandits, rogue alphas, and lone wolves will kill her for us.
But who had saved me? He looked like he had a pack, which probably made him a bandit. I gripped my knife tighter, wiped my nose on my sleeve, and forced myself to stand tall. I’d always been at the bottom of the Bloodfang pack, the orphan nobody expected anything from.
I had dreamed about a different life in another pack, but I never thought I’d actually see it. My first night in the Emberfang made me wish Pack Alpha Kael would call me back. Alone out here, surviving seemed even harder than enduring years of abuse back at Bloodfang.
The rogue alpha who had hunted me proved the stories were true. This place was as dangerous as we had been warned. I had stayed quiet, taken every insult, every shove, every reminder that my wolf had never appeared. When Cassius had asked my name, that small act of kindness had felt like hope. Now, seeing the concern in his eyes, I felt a slight sense of comfort.
“I’m okay,” I said again, trying to sound braver. “Let’s go.”
A small smile appeared on his face, and it did something to me I didn’t understand. His eyes were dark and deep, like the night, but his smile made him look warm and alive. He moved with confidence, clean-shaven, strong but lean, ready for anything. He was probably just a little older than me.
I tried to focus on his face, but my eyes drifted to his chest, his strong build, the way he walked without fear. He was taller than me, broad and powerful, with sun-kissed skin and long black hair that fell almost to his waist. Everything about him screamed strength, skill, and… something I couldn’t ignore.
I’d never felt drawn to anyone like this before, not even the Bloodfang wolves, who hadn’t been cruel. And yet here I was, fascinated by him, both impressed and unsettled.
“Yes, let’s go,” he said, turning to lead the way, fearless and untouchable.
I forced my thoughts away before they spiraled. Cassius had just shown me how deadly he could be, killing without a second thought. The dead wolf at our feet didn’t faze him. To him, it was just another part of the forest.
And yet… he had used that same power to protect me. Why?
I was so lost in my own head that I nearly bumped into him when he stopped. He bent down, his long black hair falling over his strong arms as he grabbed something from the ground, his clothes.
I quickly looked away as he pulled on his jeans and moccasins. Not that I hadn’t seen enough before. His body was perfectly strong, lean, and untouchable. Unlike that other wolf, he wasn’t a threat. I could admire him without fear.
“Your ride’s ready!” His voice pulled me back.
He was still shirtless, chest and abs flawless, muscles moving with quiet strength. I tore my eyes away from him and looked at his moccasins instead tied neatly at the ankle, decorated with colorful beads forming tiny flowers. Even in battle, he honored beauty and tradition.
At his feet lay the torn remains of his shirt. He had rushed to my defense without hesitation.
A strange warmth hit me. No one had ever fought for me. Not my adoptive mother. Not my few friends. I had learned to fight alone, using every scrap of training I could get. I had survived, yes but this… this was different.
Cassius wasn’t a rogue, not a lone wolf. He had a pack. And for the first time, I wondered if I could belong somewhere else. Maybe it wouldn’t be perfect, maybe life wouldn’t be easy but a pack that would fight for me… that had to be better than being alone.
Cassius led me through the trees to a large SHADOWFEN parked by a quiet creek. We both knelt down at the same time, washing the blood from our skin. He smiled at me, and I couldn’t help but smile back. I wished I could be that calm, that fearless.
“Let’s get those wounds bandaged first,” he said. “You can shift later to heal, but for now, we need to move.”
Even with distance between us, Lucien’s presence filled the entire Jeep like a storm waiting to break. As we sped through the forest, I buckled my seatbelt and curled into myself, wishing I could disappear. The weight of his dominance pressed down on me, heavy and suffocating. Most alphas barely affected me… but Lucien was different.Something deep inside me wanted to surrender. Was this how weaker wolves always felt around powerful leaders? If so, I didn’t know how they endured it. A wild urge to throw myself out of the moving Jeep just to escape him flickered through my mind. All three of them were completely different.Lucien was the kind of alpha I grew up fearing—the type who ruled through intimidation and expected obedience without question.Luca was another kind I had seen before. Reckless. Untouchable. The sort of alpha who took whatever he wanted because no one dared to challenge him.Cassius… was something else entirely. An alpha who didn’t seem interested in forcing submiss
All of them.If only the moon goddess had chosen one of them as my mate instead of Darius.I shouldn’t question fate. I knew that. But if Darius had accepted me… everything would have been different. My place in the pack would have been secure. My future would have been safe.I would have been standing beside the next alpha… not running for my life in the wilderness. The ache in my chest deepened as I stared at Cassius.Because for the first time since my world fell apart…I couldn’t stop wondering what my life could still become. If Darius had accepted me, my life might still have been ruined. He was already close to choosing another for betrothal. Picking me could have sparked a full pack war. Maybe rejection had saved me… or maybe it had just delayed my suffering.Instead, I had been thrown out like garbage. Left alone in the wild where wolves hunted wolves. Cassius had saved me, but helping me had clearly put him at odds with his own alpha. The way the three men looked at me told
“Thanks,” Cassius said, but I didn’t answer. My wolf was still thrumming, restless, wanting more.We plunged into the freezing stream, scrubbing blood from our muzzles and paws. Most of it hadn’t soaked our bodies, thankfully—we didn’t need to drown ourselves in ice water. Then we followed Selena. My wolf’s excitement spiked at the hunt, but she stayed on two legs, making it easy to catch up. I hung back, watching Cassius. Someone had to think straight. He circled, approaching her from the front. Selena froze, stiff as a board. Her fear made my wolf growl, eager for the kill—but all danger was gone. Cassius simply lay down in her path. She didn’t run.“Cassius… is that you?” Her voice was soft, shaking with relief. “You nearly gave me a heart attack.”I clenched my teeth to keep my mental growl from slipping across the bond. He didn’t deserve it.“I’m glad you’re here,” she said, settling near him. She drew the blanket I’d given her around her shoulders, sipping from the stream. My wo
She grumbled as one hit the ground but picked it up, keeping her eyes on me. She had tricked Cassius to get here, but I wasn’t falling for it. There was more to her story than she admitted.“Is this yours?” I asked, holding up a sharp, well-balanced knife I’d never seen before.“Yes, and I had a water bottle,” she said, licking her dry lips. My chest tightened, but I looked away. I reminded myself my loyalty was to my pack, not some stray wolf trying to pull at my feelings.I tossed her the bottle. She dropped the trail mix trying to catch it, holding her knife tight instead. Fair enough. I’d have done the same.I pointed. “Bloodfang is that way if you want to go back.”She shook her head, her face hard. “They never wanted me. I wouldn’t be welcome.”I shrugged. “Then maybe try Alloy. But it’s risky.”Her pale eyebrows pulled together. “Alloy… are they humans? Witches? What are they?”I laughed, realizing she was serious. Bloodfang had kept her sheltered. “No. Not humans or witches. M
Luca POVCassius showed his teeth the moment I reached for the SHADOWFEN keys. His golden eyes flashed as his wolf started to stir. If he didn’t control it soon, things would get messy.I raised an eyebrow, daring him to challenge my wolf. That he got attached so fast didn’t sit right with me. If he needed a reminder that the pack comes first, I was ready to give it.Before it got worse, Lucien stepped in between us. Big, broad, and solid, he didn’t just rely on strength his sharp blue eyes noticed everything, finding weaknesses in anyone who crossed him. His dirty blond hair and full beard gave him a tough, serious look that matched his role as alpha. “While Luca’s away, I’ll need your help setting up camp,” he said firmly.Cassius hesitated, holding onto the keys a little longer. Lucien growled and barked his command. Even an alpha knew not to ignore him. Cassius glared, clearly wanting more time, but finally handed over the keys.“Come on,” I growled, moving past Selena without a s
I snorted. “Let me guess some sob story?”Cassius’s frown shifted to her. “No words needed. Just smell.”Even in human form, our wolf senses didn’t lie. I understood instantly. Her eyes widened as I stepped closer. She tried to back away, but I grabbed her shoulders, stopping her. Leaning down, I brought my face near her, close enough to feel the heat radiating from her body.I immediately regretted letting her scent reach me. It wrapped around me like fire, stirring something deep, raw, and wild. My body reacted before my mind could.I shook my head, forcing control. My wolf growled inside me, eager, but I pushed it down. Alphas didn’t let instincts rule.Cassius’s words barely registered. “See? She lost her mate. She’s alone… and soon she’ll be in heat.”Selena flinched, fear flashing in her eyes. She looked fragile, like her survival was uncertain. But I couldn’t let that sway me. I pushed the wild urge aside and turned it into anger instead.“You brought a wolf in heat here?” I ba
