My stomach twisted. What if he found out I couldn’t shift? At least, for now, I had a reason to delay.

He dug through one of the bright leather bags tied to the bike. Painted in sharp reds, blues, and yellows, they looked like his moccasins. A quiet murmur escaped him when he found what he needed. Bandages. Antiseptic.

He came toward me carefully. I tensed. Alphas weren’t usually gentle.

“You’ll want to stow the knife,” he said, lips twitching. “The ride’s rough.”

I hated giving it up, but he was right. I held it out.

“Trade,” he said. He handed me the supplies and took my knife carefully. “I’ll return it later.”

I nodded, trusting him… but I noted exactly where he put it.

Seeing I wasn’t making progress, he said, “Let me help.”

He poured antiseptic over my cuts. I hissed. His eyes met mine.

“It’s okay,” I said quickly. “I can handle it.”

“You’ve been through a lot,” he said softly. “But I believe in you. You’ve made it this far.”

His words lifted me. I had survived the Bloodfang pack’s cruelty. This was just another challenge.

He wrapped my arms and elbows with steady hands. Strong, careful, protective. For the first time in a long time, I felt safe.

“You may look like a mummy, but at least your wounds won’t get infected,” he said. “Out here in the Emberfang, you can’t be too careful.”

A stray strand of my hair fell across my face. We both reached to tuck it back, and our hands almost touched. He jumped back like he’d been burned.

“Better tie our hair,” he muttered, turning away to search the packs on the SHADOWFEN.

I grabbed my hair tie, realizing how wild I must have looked blood on my arms, hair in my face, knife in hand. And yet… he’d saved me. I tied it back quickly, unsure why I even cared what he thought.

“Lucien can be a little rough,” he said without looking at me. “Luca’s unpredictable. But they’re good people. They helped me when I was exiled, then took me in later.”

“You’re all exiles?”

He nodded, running his dark hair through his hands, muscles flexing beneath. I couldn’t stop staring at him the way his chest and abs moved, the V lines tapering down… I looked away, flustered.

“Like what you see?” he asked, winking. My cheeks burned hot.

“Front or back?” he added, gesturing at the SHADOWFEN.

The seat was big enough for both of us. If I rode in front, his strong arms would cage me in while he drove… and my imagination ran wild.

“I’ll ride behind you,” I said.

He patted the seat. When I hesitated, his smile disappeared. “The Howling Echo isn’t like that guy back there. None of us will hurt you. I promise.”

I nodded. No other choice. I swung onto the SHADOWFEN, legs braced.

“Hug me tight, Sele,” he said as the engine roared.

The bike lurched forward. I yelped and clutched him, knees pressing his sides, chest against his back. My hands shifted to hold on, my head resting against him. His scent was warm, grounding like a fire on a cold night.

Speed tore through the trees. Rocks and roots rattled the SHADOWFEN, but I felt safe here, with him. Safe enough to imagine a pack that might accept me. Safe enough to hope.

“I’m sorry,” I said softly, almost whispering. “I just wanted to know the kind of jobs you take maybe I can help.”“That’s not how this works,” Lucien said right away, his voice sharp and firm.“Lucien ” Luca reached out to him, calm but serious. “We couldn’t take that job right now not if it’s what I think it is.”He was trying to protect me, but I still felt bad. “So this is my fault?”Lucien’s footsteps echoed as he paced around the room. “We left behind our weapons, our cars everything we need to survive.”“Because of me,” I said quickly, my frustration showing. “Because I led Bloodfang away from Moonblood land, and you followed me.”That made him stop.In a second, Lucien was right in front of me too fast, too close. My back hit the shelf behind me as he placed his hands on both sides of my head, blocking me in without actually touching me. His low growl filled the space, and his blue eyes burned into mine.“You’re ours,” he said roughly. “We don’t let you walk into danger alone.

If I wanted to prove myself, I had to try.Iquietly took the gun Lucien gave me and hid it behind my jeans.ThenI opened the door and stepped outside, moving carefully.Mywolf slowly calmed as I walked.Ifthey looked back, I would just act normal. But my real plan was to follow themand see what they were doing.Theydidn’t look back.So Ikept going.Ifollowed them from a distance until I reached an old warehouse at the edge oftown.Iquickly hid behind a small shop and stayed out of sight.Iwaited.Listening.Watching.AndthenI sawanother group coming toward the warehouse.Myheart jumped.Somethingabout them felt wrong.Theywere not alone and they were not herefor peace.Iwaited about ten minutes, staying completely still and listening for anymovement. Fear crept in someone could come outside and catch me at any moment.Thenit hit me. The Howling Evergreen had probably already arrived after the peoplethey were meeting.Iquickly moved, slipping between two large tr

Even with his teasing tone, I couldn’t look away from Cassius. If the others weren’t here“Go shower,” Lucien said firmly. “We need to plan.”I understood what that meant.I wasn’t being included.I stepped into the bathroom quietly and closed the door. But as I stood there alone, I heard their voices outside.Talking. Planning.Without me.A tight feeling formed in my chest. To them, I wasn’t part of the pack.I was just someone to protect someone to keep out of the way.And the worst part?Something outside suddenly made a loud sound.A deep growl followed.Close.Too close. My eyes widened.Because whatever was coming had already found us.With Cassius as my mate, I would soon join his pack. But how could I prove myself? How could I show I was useful when they always kept pushing me aside?I didn’t have my wolf. I didn’t have magic. Still, I needed to be useful in someway. As I stood under the shower, my mind kept thinking, but I couldn’t find an answer. When I finished and steppe

“Moonbeam ” he said softly, leaning in. “I want you to have everything you want.”Hislips touched mine gently, but there was a strong, possessive feel behind it.His hand pulled me closer like he didn’t want to let go.“Iwant you happy. Safe. Satisfied. You deserve all of it.”Mychest tightened. “And you’re really okay with this?” I asked quietly. “Lucien Luca being part of this it doesn’t bother you?”A lowgrowl came from him. “Only if they touch you in a way you don’t want.”Iunderstood what he meant. He had seen what Luca did to me before how broken I felt after that. Even now, I wasn’tsure if he had truly forgiven that.ButLucienMythoughts betrayed me. I remembered his hands, his voice, the way he pushed meuntil I couldn’t think straight and mybody reacted just thinking about it.Cassiustook a sharp breath, then gave a low chuckle. “That’s exactly how I want you tosmell when you’re with us.”Hiswords sent a strange feeling through my body.Lucienhad already found a

My heart jumped.A bus was coming fast on the road.Straight toward him.“It’s going to hit him!” I shouted, grabbing Cassius.Luca only smiled like he wasn’t worried. “Only if the driver doesn’t stop.”Cassius stayed calm. “Don’t worry. Lucien knows what he’s doing.”Luca turned to me, still smiling. “Pick up his clothes, little wolf.”I didn’t like it, but I did it anyway. When I picked up his shirt, I suddenly stopped. His smell hit me hard.Warm.Strong.Too much.Without thinking, I brought it closer and took a deep breath. My body reacted right away.Too fast.Too strong. When I looked up, Luca was smiling at Cassius.I felt embarrassed.I quickly packed his things into the bag and put it over my shoulder. It felt heavy and sat low on my body. For a moment, I thought about what it would be like to shift anytime I wanted. To be free.ThenSkreeeech.The sound of brakes cut through the air.“Lucien!” I screamed. My wolf moved inside me but she didn’t come out.I ran down the dange

“This doesn’t make sense,” I said as I ran. “They are mates. That’s clear.”“It is,” Luca said. “Did the witch say so?”I remembered Selena’s words. “She said the first bond was fake. So this one is real.”Luca went quiet. Then he said softly, “Cassius is good for her.”I felt his emotions sad, but calm. And CassiusHe was fully lost in her.I should have been happy. One of us found his mate. That’s a good thing. So why did it hurt? Why did it feel like I was losing something?Something that was never mine?I ran faster, hitting the ground hard, looking for anything to fight.Anything to distract me.A rogue. An enemy.Anything.Because right nowMy thoughts were not under control.Even without seeing them, I could picture everything.Her.The way she moved. The sounds she made.I remembered too much. Her body close to mine before. The way she looked when we brought her back. The way she sounded I clenched my teeth and ran even faster.Like I could leave it behind.Like I could escape the t
