[Emily]

It was always the same dream. The same alley, the same sound of a gunshot tearing through the silence, the same pool of blood spreading like a dark secret no one's supposed to see.

And me, I was frozen, useless, breathless.

The ending is a different twist from reality, but it’s always the same.

I scream, “Stop! Please...” but it's always too late. The man turns, his ice-blue eyes locking on mine; he points the gun at me and pulls the trigger.

And just like that, I wake up screaming.

My heart’s hammering so hard I swear the neighbours can probably hear it. My T-shirt’s stuck to me with sweat, and for a second, I don’t even remember where I am. Then a tiny, sleepy voice pulls me back to reality.

“Mommy?”

I look down to see Hayden, my six-year-old, rubbing his eyes, his hair sticking out in all directions like he fought a war with his pillow.

“Hey, baby,” I breathe, forcing a shaky smile. “Bad dream, that’s all.”

“You were screaming, mommy,” he says, climbing onto my bed and curling up beside me. “Was it the monster again?”

I pull him close, kissing his forehead. He smells like baby shampoo and safety. “Yeah. The same one, but mommy’s okay now.”

He peers up at me, a cute replica of me with his brown eyes, not blue, thank God, and smiles sleepily. “You should tell him to go away.”

“I’m trying, baby”, I mutter, glancing at the clock on my bedside table.

7:32 a.m. Shit!

My eyes widen. “Oh, no, no, no, we’re late!”

I jump out of bed. Hayden giggles as I trip over the pile of laundry I swore I’d fold last night.

“Go brush your teeth, kiddo!” I shout, pulling my hair into a messy bun that screams ‘mom on a mission’

Our apartment is small: two bedrooms, one bath, a kitchen that barely fits a dining table, but it’s ours. The rent’s manageable, and the leaky faucet only sometimes sounds like a dying whale. It’s a modest life, tucked away in the heart of New Orleans, and most days, it’s enough.

I rush to the kitchen and start my morning routine, making a hot cup of coffee, frying some eggs, and toasting bread. But the most fun part is always Hayden singing the ABCs in a very off-key manner. It seems to have become a ritual now since he does it every morning.

“Hayden! Shoes!” I yell.

“They’re running away!” He yells back.

I turn to find him looking for one sneaker under the couch. “You’re lucky you’re cute,” I mumble before helping him put them on.

He grins, flashing me a smile with a missing tooth. “You’re lucky you’re my mom.”

“Smooth talker,” I tease, ruffling his hair.

Breakfast is quick. I shove his lunchbox into his bag, grab mine, and we’re out the door like a chaotic duo with mother-son energy.

“Good morning, Mary”, I greet my old friend, Mary, whom I’ve known ever since I was a Kid. She was an absolute lifesaver when I moved back here and never judged me for my predicament.

“Oh, Emily, Hayden, I thought you’d already left.” Hayden pushes past me and rushes to her arms, giving her a tight embrace. He loves her so much.

“Forgot to set the alarm. We’ll be hurrying up then.” I pull Hayden as they whisper their goodbyes.

The morning air is cool when we step out, and the streets are buzzing with people going about their business. Our little neighbourhood isn’t all that fancy, but it’s homey, just the right place to raise a kid.

We make it to Bayview Elementary just before the first bell rings.

“Hey, Ms Matthews!” Mrs Graham, Hayden’s teacher, calls from the gate. “Cutting it close again?”

“Just keeping life exciting,” I say with a grin.

She laughs. “Hayden’s a gem. Don’t worry, we’ve got him.”

I kneel to kiss my son’s cheek. “Be good today, okay?”

He nods solemnly. “Promise. Love you, Mommy.”

“Love you more.”

I wave as he runs inside, his backpack bouncing. That kid is my entire world, no matter the chaos he’s brought to my life.

Now it’s my turn to face the battlefield, which is the bus ride to LensCorp.

The bus is, as always, packed tighter than a can of sardines. I grab the pole and try not to inhale too deeply because, dear God, someone’s emitting a foul smell that is enough to kill someone like me.

A large man stands in front of me, taking up most of the space. He’s way too close than needed, and that makes me anxious.

“Excuse me,” I mutter, trying to adjust, but he grunts. That’s it. Just…grunts.

I sigh and mutter loud enough for him to hear. “Right. I’ll stand here and pretend you’re not squishing me to death.”

As the bus lurches forward, I can’t help but think about my life like I always do.

[Emily]“So what are you doing?” I asked Lisa, whose eyes were glued to the computer screen, but she wasn't giving me an ounce of attention. After a while, she finally remembered to answer me.“We need to access a report of the budget and expenditure for last year’s marketing campaigns, but Mr Stradford isn’t around, so we're trying to see if we can access it on the database without his permission.”“Oh, let me help then.”After three hours, going through the data and running around from department to department, I was ready to declare today as my worst day here. And we weren’t even halfway done. If I could rate today, I would give it a negative five-star review.Just as I thought it couldn’t get any worse, the telephone beside my desk buzzed with a call.“Hello, Emily from marketing speaking,” I answered brusquely.“Come to my office immediately.” The line disconnected immediately, and I was filled with dread. What does he want from me now?I grabbed my notepad and walked to Ms Tash

  • The Billionaire DNA Match   16~Annoying People

[Emily]The much-needed weekend was over, and Monday started with a headache no kind of Advil could fix.I’d spent the whole weekend replaying the conversation with that devil over and over again, on repeat. Just saying his name felt like a bad omen. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his expression when he told me I couldn’t leave. He had been calm, cold and very certain. The man could kill someone with a smile on his face and get away with it. That I was sure of; I’d seen him do it six years ago.If I was going to continue working at LensCorp with him around for two more years, then I had to come up with a plan. To protect Hayden, to protect myself. But I’d have to be strong, not to give him a chance to see my weaknesses.“Mommy, you’re making the angry face again,” Hayden said around a spoonful of cereal, bringing me out of my thoughts.I blinked. “What angry face?”He scrunched his eyebrows together, puffed out his cheeks, and gave me a spot-on imitation. I almost choked on my cof

[Elias]I gave her a flat look. “You always jump straight to that, don’t you?”“When it comes to women, yes.” She leaned closer, voice low. “Because you don’t do curiosity, Elias. You either want control or you don’t care. And right now, you sound very interested.”“No, I don’t,” I said, standing up, running my hand through my hair. “You’re just jealous she has an ounce of my attention.”“Maybe.” She set down her glass and stood in front of me, arms crossed. “But I know you, Elias. When something gets under your skin, you start digging. You won’t stop until you figure it out… don’t do that with her.”For a second, I almost said she was right. That day in Tasha’s office, she had looked at me as though she was seeing a ghost. She looked haunted, terrified and even broken. Something about that look in her eyes- was it fear? It intrigued me, and it did get under my skin. Why did she look at me as though she’d seen her worst nightmare?“Noted,” I said instead, turning toward the window.Ta

[Elias]By the time I finally left the office, my head was pounding. I loosened my tie and stepped into the warm night air. It was only eight o'clock, but it looked like it was already midnight. I walked to the parking lot, spotting my Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ a few minutes ahead, where I’d parked it this morning.I climbed into the car, pressing the ignition, before I sped out of the building. There was music playing, low jazz that filled the silence.By the time I pulled into the underground garage, I could already see three texts lighting up my phone.Aliya: “You’re late”Aliya: “Dinner’s getting cold.”Aliya: “Don’t make me come drag you here.”I stared at the last one. I could see her doing that. I chuckled before walking into the fancy apartment complex just around downtown. When I finally walked into her place, she was standing in the kitchen in that oversized silk robe she loved, hair in a loose bun, a glass of wine in hand and pretending she wasn’t checking the door ev

  • The Billionaire DNA Match   13~The Slave Contract[2]

[Emily]I never knew until now that there was a clause that required me to work for seven years. Was that even legal? At that time, I had been heavily pregnant and just needed the job and the security that came with it.“I… I didn’t realise,” I stammer. “I was…”“Ignorant?” He cuts me off again, his tone clipped. “I bet you didn’t even read the paper you signed.”My face flushes hot, wishing I could go back in time. Wishing this were all a dream? That I wasn't standing here with him.His gaze doesn’t waver. “Ignorance doesn’t nullify obligation.”I clench my jaw. ‘So you’ll sue me if I leave?’ I want to ask, but I don't.“If you breach your contract, LensCorp has every right to pursue legal action,” he continues, moving from his desk to stand in front of me. I subconsciously move back.“Legal action? For resigning?” I blurt out, without thinking. He tilts his head slightly. “You’re not resigning. You’re abandoning a binding agreement.”I stare at him, frustration and fear twisting tog

  • The Billionaire DNA Match   12~The Slave Contract[1]

[Emily]The morning feels wrong the moment I wake up. There’s that quiet before the storm kind of stillness, the kind that presses on your chest and tells you something’s about to go very wrong. I don’t know if it’s instinct or paranoia. Maybe it’s both.I dropped Hayden off at school as usual.“Mommy, when I get home today, can we get ice cream?”“Only when you finish your homework first,” I say, smiling slightly despite the turmoil in my heart. He grins up at me, gap-toothed. “Deal.”I kiss his forehead, breathe him in, and tell myself to be brave. The bus ride to LensCorp feels longer than usual, every stop dragging out like time’s mocking me. The buildings look the same, the same busy streets, the same noise from honking cars, but everything feels different now. Maybe because I know he’s here, breathing the same air as me.When I reached the building, I almost turned back. My reflection in the glass doors looks pale with dark circles beneath my eyes. I hadn’t slept a wink last nig
