POV: Aria

The Astor Ballroom glittered like a palace of diamonds. Crystal chandeliers cascaded from the vaulted ceiling, casting warm light across the marble floors. Thousands of fresh roses perfumed the air with their sweet fragrance. And everywhere Aria looked, the wealthiest people in New York mingled and smiled and pretended they didn't have secrets.

Aria stood at the edge of the ballroom, a champagne flute in her hand, her emerald pendant warm against her chest. She'd chosen her dress carefully—a deep emerald gown that matched her grandmother's pendant, elegant but not ostentatious. She wanted to blend in, to be just another beautiful woman at a charity gala.

But she couldn't shake the feeling that everyone was watching her.

"You're doing fine," Grace murmured, appearing at her elbow. "Just breathe."

Aria took a slow breath, forcing herself to relax. "I don't see her yet."

"She'll be here. Vanessa never misses a chance to be seen." Grace's eyes swept the room. "Remember the plan. Get close, find the key, and get out."

"Get close, find the key, get out." Aria repeated the words like a mantra. "Simple."

"Nothing about this is simple." Grace squeezed her arm. "But you're stronger than you know."

Aria nodded, steeling herself. She could do this. She had to do this. For her child. For the truth. For every night she'd spent crying herself to sleep, wondering what she'd done wrong.

She scanned the room, cataloguing faces she recognized. There was Charles Blackwell, Damien's father, looking distinguished in his black tuxedo. Vivian Blackwell was beside him, her expression perfectly composed, her diamonds glittering. They hadn't noticed her yet—or if they had, they were pretending otherwise.

She was grateful for that.

Vanessa Sterling made her entrance an hour later, descending the grand staircase like a queen surveying her kingdom. She was stunning in a silver gown that hugged every curve, her blonde hair swept up in an elaborate updo, diamonds glittering at her throat and ears. The crowd parted for her, drawn to her like moths to a flame.

She was everything Aria had never been—confident, commanding, utterly in control.

And she was walking straight toward her.

"Aria." Vanessa's voice was honeyed poison. "I wasn't expecting to see you here."

Aria forced a smile. "Vanessa. You look lovely."

"I know." Vanessa's eyes swept over her, assessing. "You look... different. More worn, perhaps. Divorce does that to a woman."

Aria's smile didn't waver. "It's been a challenging few months. But I'm managing."

"Are you?" Vanessa stepped closer, her voice dropping. "I heard you're trying to start a business. Marchand International, wasn't it? I'm surprised anyone would invest in a failing company."

"The investors seem to believe in the vision." Aria kept her voice light. "But I'm sure you're not here to discuss business."

"Of course not." Vanessa's smile sharpened. "I'm here to support the cause. Children's education, you know. Such a worthy endeavor."

Aria felt sick. Vanessa had never cared about anything except herself. But she played the part of philanthropist beautifully—smiling, charming, collecting donations and praise.

"I'm sure the children appreciate your support," Aria said evenly.

"They will." Vanessa's eyes glittered. "I'm quite generous when I want to be."

The conversation continued, a careful dance of pleasantries and veiled barbs. Aria kept her focus on Vanessa's clutch—a small silver bag that matched her gown. The key was in there. It had to be.

She just had to find a way to get it.

The opportunity came two hours later.

Vanessa was holding court near the bar, surrounded by admirers—a senator, a tech billionaire, and a famous actress who'd just won an Oscar. They were laughing at something Vanessa had said, their eyes fixed on her like she was the sun and they were planets in her orbit.

Aria watched from across the room, her heart pounding. She'd been circling Vanessa all night, waiting for the right moment. And now, finally, it seemed to be coming.

Vanessa's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, her expression shifting to annoyance.

"Excuse me," she said, her voice clipped. "I need to take this."

She set her clutch on the bar, just for a moment, as she stepped away to answer the call.

Aria's heart raced. This was her chance.

She moved quickly, positioning herself beside the bar, her hand reaching for the clutch. The silver clasp was cool against her fingers. She opened it, her eyes scanning the contents—lipstick, compact, phone, and there, tucked in a side pocket, a small silver key.

Aria's fingers closed around it, her pulse pounding in her ears. She could feel eyes on her, could feel the weight of everyone watching.

But no one was looking. No one noticed.

She slipped the key into her own clutch and stepped back, her face carefully neutral.

"What are you doing?"

Aria's blood ran cold. She turned to find Vanessa staring at her, her eyes narrowed with suspicion.

Aria's mind raced. She had to think fast, had to come up with something believable.

"I was just admiring your clutch," she said smoothly. "It's beautiful. Where did you get it?"

Vanessa's expression shifted, her suspicion softening into vanity. "It's vintage Hermès. My father gave it to me for my birthday."

"It's lovely." Aria smiled, her heart still racing. "You have excellent taste."

"I know." Vanessa's smile was cold. "Now if you'll excuse me, I need to speak with the event coordinator."

She swept away, leaving Aria standing alone at the bar, the key burning a hole in her clutch.

She'd done it. She'd actually done it.

Now she just had to get out.

Grace was waiting near the exit, her expression tight with worry. "Did you get it?"

Aria nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "Let's go."

They slipped out of the ballroom, down the marble staircase, and into the cool night air. Aria didn't breathe until they were safely in the taxi, heading back to Brooklyn.

"I can't believe I did that," she said, her voice shaking. "I actually stole from Vanessa Sterling."

"You did what you had to do." Grace's voice was firm. "Now let's hope it was worth it."

Aria pulled out the key, turning it over in her fingers. It was small and unassuming, nothing special about it. But it held the key to everything—Victor's secrets, the truth about her marriage, the evidence that could destroy him.

"We need to get a copy made," she said. "And we need to do it tonight."

Grace nodded. "I know a place. It's not far."

The locksmith worked quickly, making a perfect copy of the key. Within an hour, Aria was holding the duplicate in her hand, the original tucked safely back in her clutch.

"Now we just have to get it back to Vanessa," she said. "And then—"

"And then we go to the bank." Grace's voice was steady. "And we end Victor Sterling."

Aria nodded, her heart pounding with anticipation. She'd come so far, fought so hard, risked everything. And now, finally, she was close to the truth.

She just hoped it was worth the cost.

The next morning, Aria stood outside the Midtown bank, her hands trembling as she clutched the copy of the key. Grace was beside her, her expression resolute.

"Are you ready?" Grace asked.

Aria took a deep breath. "Ready."

They walked into the bank, their heels clicking against the marble floor. The lobby was quiet, the tellers professional, the security discreet. Aria approached the front desk, her voice steady as she requested access to the safety deposit box.

"Your key, please," the clerk said.

Aria handed over the copy, her heart racing. The clerk examined it, nodded, and led them to the vault.

The box was in the back, in a private room. Aria slid the key into the lock, turned it, and opened the lid.

Inside, there was a single file folder, thick with documents.

Aria opened it, her eyes scanning the contents. Financial records. Transcripts of conversations. Photographs. And there, at the bottom, a series of recordings on a flash drive.

"This is it," she whispered. "Everything."

Grace's eyes widened as she looked over Aria's shoulder. "We need to get these out of here. Now."

Aria nodded, tucking the folder into her bag. They left the bank quickly, their steps hurried, their hearts pounding.

When they got home, Aria opened the folder and began to read. What she found made her blood run cold.

The recordings were meticulous—every conversation Victor had ever had about his conspiracy. He'd named names, detailed dates, confessed to everything. It was all there.

And there, buried in the middle of the folder, was the one document Aria had never expected to see.

A letter. From her grandmother Grace. Addressed to Victor Sterling.

"I know what you've done. And I won't let you get away with it. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to protect my granddaughter."

Aria stared at the letter, her heart pounding. "Grandma," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "What is this?"

Grace's face went pale. "Aria, I can explain—"

"You knew." Aria's voice cracked. "You knew everything. You knew Victor framed me. You knew he was behind it all. And you didn't tell me?"

"I was trying to protect you." Grace's voice was desperate. "I made a deal with Victor. He would leave you alone, and I would keep your secret. But I never—"

"What secret?" Aria demanded. "What secret were you hiding?"

Grace was silent for a long moment. Then she said, "The truth about your mother. She didn't die in an accident, Aria. She was killed. By Victor Sterling."

Aria felt the world tilt beneath her feet.
