I WOKE UP in the middle of the night with the feeling of the soft sheets covering my body. My hands roamed beside me on the bed and noticed there was an empty space. I looked up to try to look for Callan in the middle of the darkened room. But I did not see him.My heart started hammering inside my chest, I looked through our clothes on the floor and it was still there. But there were no traces of Callan. I pulled the sheets and wrapped my body with them.I carefully walked toward the bathroom but then right on the balcony, I saw a silhouette.“You’re awake,” I mumbled as I went to Callan. He was smoking a cigarette.“Just couldn’t sleep,” Callan replied to me as he looked at the scenery in front of us. Judging from the city lights, I guess it has just passed midnight since the city lit up with lights from establishments.Callan wasn’t wearing anything other than a towel wrapped around his waist. “What troubles you?” I asked, my voice soft and gentle. I leaned onto the metal railing.
WE ALREADY CHECKED out from the hotel before the sun could even rise up in the east. Callan made a phone call to have someone who can drive us to a firing range in the next town. When I asked whether the drive would be long, Callan told me that I could sleep on his shoulders so that I could get more sleep.Right, he was smirking when he said that to me. Truly insinuating about something we did all night that made us awake for hours way more than the time we had actually slept.I jokingly hit his rib and he just laughed.Who would have thought that the man that I once had known as arrogant and reserved, would be acting like this with me? There’s no denying anymore. We are actually madly in love.I wonder, if there were no chaos outside our lives would become this close and stronger? The same car that brought us here at the hotel yesterday arrived outside of the hotel with Aakil walking to us to get our luggage and secure it inside the trunk of the car. With a few greetings, I got in th
THE DAYS PASSED by and it was not easy at all. Each day I had to wake up early and train the whole day. I will first hit the gym which is luckily just at the back of this building where we had been staying.I also made it a routine to cook for Callan and his men on some days when we haven’t ordered groceries from outside. Aakil and his brother would help me as well as Alec.Oh, he joined the team on the second day of our stay. Saying he still had to pack and bid goodbye to his parents—Aunt Yna hesitate for him to join the mission. But Alec was determined, saying he had something to prove to himself. This mission was what he needed to unleash his full potential. But he joked one time, saying I needed somebody who could protect me as we execute the mission. I countered his joke with the truth: “I have a husband who would die for me.”I said that out of full devotion to Callan because I would do the same for him.Alec just shrugged his head and mumbled. “Still, I had to be there.”I smil
THE FLIGHT TO ITALY was successfully rebooked. But we had to pay extra for it. Callan used his credit card for the transaction, luckily, it went through. I thought there were still gonna be problems along the way but we boarded the plane. All ten of us. The men Callan picked blended in with the crowd. We had to sit away from each other to avoid getting attention.Aakil sat beside Elis and Alec. Silence filled the plane as we settled on our seats and strapped the seatbelts on our bodies. Everything seemed to be in a rush. Like how a week already passed by and we were just focused in our own bubble after a week of training. But despite of things moving way too fast, I was sure that we had prepared for this. If not too much preparation, at least we had enough to carry us through.Callan proposed a plan to the team on how we can access the island with fake invitations. Callan pulled some strings. He paid some people in Italy to create false identities.Only him and I shall be granted ac
CALLAN AND I were fetched by a limousine right across the street from the motel we were renting out. “We’ve arrived, signor e signora,” announced the driver. I grabbed my small purse. Callan quickly got out of the vehicle and opened the door for me. I gave him a sweet smile. From the ones of anyone who would look at us, we were a couple who was madly in love with each other. I wasn’t even kidding. If anyone would see us, all dressed up, they would think that we were just a normal couple heading up for a formal party tonight. We were already wearing our masks. Underneath the flowy long ends of my gown, a small sharp knife was hidden underneath my stockings. We agreed not to carry guns just yet and planned to steal two guns from armed men that we saw once we finally got inside the masquerade party’s venue. And looking at Callan in his black well-fitted tuxedo, I couldn’t help but feel awed. “You look beautiful like the evening,” Callan whispered as he tucked a small strand of
I RAN SO FAST that I stumbled on my foot alongside Callan. I could not believe it, or I was trying to fool myself into an illusion that my mother was dead, and whatever I witnessed a few minutes ago was not valid. Be damned my illusions, I’d be freaking damned! Callan guarded me from falling off balance as he reassured me, “Hey, watch out!”As Callan called out my name, I looked to the back and saw a group of henchmen following us with guns in their hands and they started shooting aimlessly.Callan grabbed me by my arms and pushed me towards the side of a wall, rescuing me as I would have endured a severe injury if the bullet pierced through my body. For a brief moment there, my gaze dawned on my husband as he grabbed me tightly in his arms with his sweaty shoulders. Callan threw down a cartel that was blocking the road as he took me up in his arms and my hands hovering over his wide shoulders and our breaths intensified in fear, confusion, and uncertainty of whether we would make
I COULD HAVE SWORN THAT I had not been in such a position where I felt such revolting fear in my chest. As the noise of gunshots echoed into the air through my ears, my heart pounded so loudly out of concern for my husband.Callan took down everyone, and he was facing me from his back, a triumphant aura emulating from his powerful stance. I never knew I could feel proud of someone for being violent, but here I am, rooting for the underboss of the Ravij clan as my once-believed-dead mother looks down at him with nothing but anger in her eyes. “This fucking Ravij. How dare you people mess with my husband? If you thought you were allowed to just barge in this place and walk back alive, you are high, oh god, my lord help you! You are highly mistaken!”My wretched mother spoke while staring below her feet to the ground where Callan already executed the henchmen that worked under her command, at least the ones that were guarding them on this island, to our knowledge. But did I just hear
CALLAN TOOK OUT a gun from the car’s shelf and handed it to Aakil. With his determined eyes, he shot five bullets from the broken window. Exactly five bullets I counted as each vibrated against my ears, went straight towards her direction. I could see all of it, each scene that happened as the minutes passed by. The machine gun flew in the air as my mother fell on her face on the ground. But she could still move, we were already so far that any bullets wouldn’t hit her anymore.Even if she was helpless with gunshots on her body, I knew she was not dead. Our car kept going. We finally hit the road. If there were police in this area, it could have been chased. But luckily, this whole area was Cato Clan’s den. No police may wander at this hour. Yet, any time some people might have heard the news that happened on the island the allies of the Cato clan will surely provide backup for retaliation.Aakil breaks that illusion as if he could read my mind, “We are not safe yet. There should be
