78. FIGHT THE ENEMY

I WOKE UP in the middle of the night with the feeling of the soft sheets covering my body. My hands roamed beside me on the bed and noticed there was an empty space. I looked up to try to look for Callan in the middle of the darkened room. But I did not see him.

My heart started hammering inside my chest, I looked through our clothes on the floor and it was still there. But there were no traces of Callan. I pulled the sheets and wrapped my body with them.

I carefully walked toward the bathroom but then right on the balcony, I saw a silhouette.

“You’re awake,” I mumbled as I went to Callan. He was smoking a cigarette.

“Just couldn’t sleep,” Callan replied to me as he looked at the scenery in front of us. Judging from the city lights, I guess it has just passed midnight since the city lit up with lights from establishments.

Callan wasn’t wearing anything other than a towel wrapped around his waist. “What troubles you?” I asked, my voice soft and gentle. I leaned onto the metal railing.
