(Serena)

The nurse greets us when we get inside the doors.

Her voice is calm and gentle, but it carries that briskness and efficiency of someone who handles a dozen fragile lives before breakfast.

“Mr. Hale, Mrs. Hale… Thank you for coming. He’s in the third room on the left. We have him stabilized, and he’s doing better than expected considering the circumstances. He’s still very small but fully developed.”

Better than expected.

That’s all I hear. That it could have gone so much worse.

“How serious was the birth for him?” I ask.

“He didn’t breathe at first. His heart rate was barely there. But this little guy is a fighter. That’s for sure. He’s just six pounds but he wasn’t too far off full gestation.”

Something warms inside me. Life is so precious. He must want to be here. “And his Mom, Savannah?”

“She’s stable but critical. We’ll know more once she wakes up.”

I nod. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. I almost laugh at the irony of that thought.

  • The Billionaire Married Me, Then Forgot How to Love Me   180 What I Didn’t See

(James)The fire’s down to coals. I sit beside it, watching the last of the flames crackle and shrink.I toss on some more wood. Sven won’t be here for a couple of hours yet.The silence echoes. Every pop of wood in the stove reminds me that she’s not here. That she's gone, and I let her go.She was right. About all of it.Not just the anger. Not just the screaming words. But the truth beneath it all. About being unheard. Being overlooked. My silence. My fucking compliance. I thought I was playing diplomat.I thought I was keeping the peace. What I was really doing... was protecting the system. My family’s system. My mother’s way of operating. And letting Serena get slowly gutted by it.God. The things she told me.I was shocked by how she said them. The venom in her voice. Like I needed to be tortured before she could finally be free.I deserved that. Maybe not the way it came out — but I earned that explosion.Because she tried to say it all before. She tried to say it quietly. She

  • The Billionaire Married Me, Then Forgot How to Love Me   179 There is No Wrong Answer

(Serena)Eventually, I stretch, sit up, and pad barefoot to the balcony.Wow! I’m actually in Paris. The Eiffel Tower is just visible between two buildings, this feels like magic.Out in the small dining room, on the breakfast table, there's a covered tray someone’s delivered. My stomach growls.I lift the cover.Croissants, of course. But also warm pain au chocolat, tartine with butter and jam, soft-boiled eggs, fruit arranged like someone expected royalty. It smells like heaven. I don’t even hesitate. I eat some of everything. It’s just perfect. Authentic and effortless. And then, of course, I can’t help myself. I get dressed in jeans and a red sweater.I grab my notebook, a soft grey wool coat, sunglasses, and head out.I need to visit every pâtisserie I can find. The first one I see has pink-tinted glass and a window display that nearly makes me cry. Tiny confections shaped like orchids. Raspberry mousse domes with crystallized rose petals. I’m breathless. This is my absolute dre

  • The Billionaire Married Me, Then Forgot How to Love Me   178 A New Place, A New Pulse

(Serena)The plane touches down with barely a bump. Sleek, quiet, uneventful — the opposite of everything inside me.I’m in Paris.I don’t know what I thought it would feel like, but it isn’t this.A car is waiting at the private airstrip and they bring my luggage and load.I’ve let Sabine know I’m on the way and she’s sent the address for a place she stayed in once and liked it so much, she bought it.It’s mine for the next two weeks and for as long as I need.I sit in the back of the town car, watching the city move past the. On the street, people walk like they have nowhere to be and all the time in the world to get there. The architecture rises around us like it’s part of the sky. Gold balconies. Carved doors. Buildings that look like they’ve always been here and always will be.The driver takes a scenic route. He asked if I’d like a quick tour. I don’t mind. Paris is place I’ve dreamt of coming to.I see the Eiffel Tower appear in the distance, glowing against a grey-blue sky.

  • The Billionaire Married Me, Then Forgot How to Love Me   177 When the Fire Dies

(James)The wind cuts hard this morning.I stay out in it anyway, no coat, just boots shoved on and my sleeves rolled up.But I want the sting of the icy coldness.I welcome it. It matches what’s in my heart right now.The snow’s crusted with ice where the sun hasn’t touched yet, and the air is sub-zero. It scrapes through my lungs with every breath.I walk to the edge of the clearing, just before the tree line. Where the world looks endless and blank and brutal. She’ll be gone soon. And this time, I’m not going after her.Last night… Fuck.It wasn’t what she said that shook me. Although what she said was awful. It was how she said it. Like she needed to hurt me enough to match the pain sitting in her own chest.Like she wanted to see how far she could go.And maybe I deserved it. I should’ve taken more time to find out about her.Maybe I earned that slap across the soul. But it wasn’t just honesty. It was something else — jagged, sharp-edged. Like she needed to wound her way out of

  • The Billionaire Married Me, Then Forgot How to Love Me   176 Now We’re Both Wreckage

(Serena)The fire is just glowing embers when I wake.I’m wrapped in furs, but it’s not warmth that stirs me… it’s the crushing, skull-splitting pain. And the awareness that I said too much. No, not too much.Just too cruel. Too nasty.I reverted back to that version of me I’ve kept hidden. That I thought I’d changed from. But I haven’t changed. My throat is raw from yelling, and my chest hollowed out from screaming at the sky like some feral thing. James practically had to carry me back in here.Strangely I remember everything as clear as a bell. There’s no hangover fog. No flashbacks. My mouth is dry. My heart heavier than anything I’ve ever carried. He’s not in the cot. The room is quiet. A pot of water is bubbling gently on the stove. I smell coffee.I sit up slowly. My head is pounding. There’s a thud near the door. I turn.James is there, boots covered in snow, sleeves rolled up, bringing in more firewood. He sees me. Gives a short nod.Not cold. Not warm. Neutral. It’s worse th

  • The Billionaire Married Me, Then Forgot How to Love Me   175 Letting It All Go

(Serena)I look at his profile in the flickering firelight. I try to calm down a little. But something inside me is raw and broken and I can’t stick it back together this time.“She stayed until he quit. And yeah, he did quit. He got help. He’s a good man now.”“He is.”“But that doesn’t erase the years of mental anguish feeling like it was my fault. It sure as hell doesn’t mean I walked into adulthood knowing how to be happy.”Silence.“I’ve got damage too, James. I didn’t get therapy and a trust fund. I got secrets and shame and parents who now say they just want me to be happy—”My voice cracks “—but they stayed. They stayed in a miserable, volatile marriage, and sometimes I wonder if that’s what I’m supposed to do, too.”I turn to him. “So don’t you dare act like I don’t know what pain looks like. It’s the wallpaper of my childhood.”James swallows. “Serena… I think maybe we’ve a had a little much to drink.”“And maybe that’s why this—” I lift the bottle and take a deep swig— “fee
