I watched Xander glaring at something and looked over in the direction.

My eyes widened.

What was he doing here?

“Two million and a hundred thousand.” Someone else bid.

“Three million.” Xander bid, gritting his teeth.

“Five million.” Dave said.

“Ten million.” Xander barked right back.

I gasped and so did so many of the others.

“Xander, that's a bit excessive.” I muttered, leaning closer to him but Xander was busy glaring at Dave, who was smirking back at him. At us.

“Ten million dollars, going once, going twice, and sold to Xander King.” The auctioneer cheered and so did the rest.

“Xander,” I started but he cut me off.

“Does it matter? It's for a good cause anyway.”

I sighed.

I could see that his mood had shifted considerably.

I could sense the currents of fury rippling underneath his skin.

It was like the old Xander King was back. It was as if he would explode at any point right now.

And it was obvious that I was not the only one who felt the shift. I caught Gra

I turned to face Dave. "What is it?" I asked, my voice clipped. Dave crossed his arms around his chest. "This is not how I expected us to meet again, and this is not how I expected you to talk to me."I shrugged. "We can't have it all our way, you know?" I sighed. "Look, Dave. Whatever happened, happened. Now I have moved on, and so have you, so... maybe we should just let bygones be bygones, and then... pretend that we... didn't know each other.""Let bygones be bygones." Dave let out a humorless laugh, sounding like a maniac. "It's easy for you to say when all you've gotten from this marriage of yours is gains. But for someone who got nothing but a bad reputation for being human, I don't think I can forgive you, River.""I don't know what happened with you," I told him, "and I do not even care. Look, we made our choices. It's not like I chose to marry Xander before breaking up with you. We called it quits before I started my new relationship. So, I do not care what you think about m

    |||||“Maybe poking a feral dog in its mouth is not the best strategy of them all,” River hummed more to herself as she took a sip of her sparkling water. She took a look around. "Where did he go? And where is Trisha? Do you think they might be licking each other's wounds? Or would they be poisoning my dinner?" I grinned at her. “After saying all that to her that day and him today, you are thinking about the consequences now?”"Hey, it's not my fault that Marcus Thorne happens to be as much of a piece of shit as his cousin brother. I already tolerate one. I do not have to tolerate the other one who I am not married to." She shrugged.I rolled my eyes. "Is it necessary to drag me into everything? Is it necessary that you have to taunt me no matter who the conversation is about? I kind of find it a little unfair, my sweet. You are supposed to be my wife. You are supposed to be smitten with me."Grandpa let out a snicker at the other side of the table and I looked over at him with a gla

    |||||"Shouldn't we be worried about Marcus and Trisha showing up?" River asked.I just shrugged as I pulled her against me and wrapped my arms around her waist. "We'll worry about that when it gets there," I said. "Meanwhile, I would love to have some quality time with my wife."River raised a brow at me. "We literally spend every moment with each other, like 24x7. It's sort of too much at this point."I clucked my tongue dismissively. "There is no such thing as too much time together for newly married couples. This is our honeymoon phase. We are supposed to be attached to each other at the hips."River rolled her eyes as I twirled her around and held her so that her back was to my chest. I wrapped my arms tightly around her."All these people are watching us," she noted.I chuckled as I sniffed her neck, taking in that exquisite tropical fruity scent that she had gotten on our honeymoon, as we slowly danced to the song."Are you sniffing me again?" River asked, wrinkling her nose bu

    |||||“Okay.” I took a deep breath as I looked out at the entrance of the gala. Cameras flashed everywhere, and their complete attention was on the car even though they were clicking some other person right now. The black Rolls-Royce that Xander was famous for having."It's fine. This is not the first time that you have come to a gala with me." He rubbed my shoulder as if that was going to help. I gave him a look. "Yeah, but this is the first time that I am coming as your wife. The whole personal assistant to wife transition is something that is frowned upon in high society. I said that perfectly.""When did you start caring about what others thought?" He let out a laugh as if it was supposed to be funny. I rolled my eyes. "It's not that I care, it's that I might get beat up in the women's room or something." Xander gave me a disbelieving look. “My darling, you watch too much drama. That kind of thing never happens.” He said and then added as an after-thought. “Almost never.” I

    ||||I stared at the bottle of placebo pills in my hand. What had once seemed like the perfect plan was now unraveling into the worst thing I could ever do to River and to our relationship. Of course, this had been the plan from the very beginning. It was the reason I married her. I had decided she would make the perfect mother for my child, even if we weren’t truly together. I wanted a child who would inherit the kind of morals and principles she possessed. And I needed to do this if I wanted the inheritance for myself, if I wanted to make sure some idiot like Marcus Thorne didn’t get his claws on the empire I helped build over the past few years then I needed to follow through. But a part of my mind kept asking, Was it necessary to do it behind her back? Why couldn’t I just ask her?And there it was again - the same question that had haunted me before the marriage. What if she doesn’t want to? What if she doesn’t listen? What if she wants to terminate the contract? Then what would I
