“Why is Edward not by Grandpa's side?” I asked.

Stupid question.

Even I had to admit that I deserved the flat look that Xander was throwing my way. Of course he would have told me if he knew.

He would not be asking the question in the first place if he knew.

“Should we go hunting for that rat?” I asked.

Xander shrugged. “Rats are not hunted, sweetheart. They are smoked out.”

It was my turn to roll my eyes.

“And how do you smoke something out when you don't where it's hole is?” I asked.

He shrugged again. “We will figure something out.”

“You do realize people will start leaving soon right? And then we would be lost. What do you plan to do after that?”

He nodded and looked around.

“We need more team members.” He made a note.

“Team members?” I asked. “I didn't know you were putting together a SWAT team.”

“Stop sassing me, wifey. Because I happen to know just what to do to stop your sass and have you begging for me instead.”

Xander did not have the basic decency to lower h

    |||||I don't know how I managed to ruin it. Everything was going on just as planned. I had our happily ever after so thoroughly planned. I really needed to get some grip on my tongue before I ruined our marriage once and for all. I stopped short at my train of thoughts. It was not sounding as professional as I wanted it to be. I mean, I plan to have a child with my wife. No matter how professional and detached that I try to be about it, it was not going to stay that way. Some kind of personal feelings were bound to creep in anyway. "Why the long face, Mr. CEO?"I looked up from my laptop, more annoyed than I already was at the exasperating sound of my best friend.“Not happy to see me either? And you are not attached to River like she is your lifeline. There is something very wrong today.” Did I expect Peter to read the room? I did not. But did I still hope that he would? That would be a yes. Stupid hope, it is. But still I hoped nevertheless. "A penny for your thoughts?" Pe

    |||||“I don't think she does.”The both of us turned around to see Xander standing there, hands in pant pockets. I raised a brow. “What are you doing here?” Dave asked, a crack in his firm nonchalant voice. Xander raised a brow. “Funny you asked. One would think that it is a husband's duty to keep his beloved wife out of harm's way.” I bit my lips to stifle a smile. I had to give it to both of us - no matter what the circumstance of our marriage had been, we played the role of the devoted spouses pretty well. Dave let out a scoff. “Yeah, let's not get started on that. We all know-”“Let's not get started on anything because one, you won't be able to finish it. And secondly, we do not have the time.” Xander smiled. He then turned to me. “Baby, Grandpa AND his stupid PA are waiting to see us off.”I nodded, realizing that Edward had reappeared and that was why Xander was here and there was no use of me snooping around. I stepped away from Dave and towards Xander, who wrapped his

    ||||| I was about to place a delicious piece of lemon scorn in my mouth when a huge hand that I was all too familiar with shot out of nowhere and guided my fork to his mouth. "Mmmmm." Xander let out an exaggerated moan as he tasted it. "Everything tastes better when your wife feeds it to you." He commented. The ladies that I was talking to, Mrs. and Ms. Potts looked at him with suppressed rage. This Ms. Pott had not dated Xander but her younger sister had. Did this man even realize how hard it is to live? I did not do well in social situations. I was a corporate girlie. And then I had to marry him, and now I have to act like a socialite as well. Maybe I should ask for a raise. "Xander," Ms. Pott, Rovina, I believe her name was—stepped forward with a smile. "Do you remember me?" Xander gave her a confused look. "Am I supposed to?" I took a deep breath. This guy was trying to dig my grave. But before I could say anything, or try to placate the situation, or maybe comfort the g

    |||||As soon as I heard his voice, I wanted to run away. It was true that I had dated him for over an year and had at some point beem excited to marry him. But that man was long gone. I did not even know who this new Dave was.I turned to face Dave. "What is it?" I asked, my voice clipped. Dave crossed his arms around his chest. "This is not how I expected us to meet again, and this is not how I expected you to talk to me." I shrugged. "We can't have it all our way, you know?" I sighed. "Look, Dave. Whatever happened, happened. Now I have moved on, and so have you, so... maybe we should just let bygones be bygones, and then... pretend that we... didn't know each other." "Let bygones be bygones." Dave let out a humorless laugh, sounding like a maniac. "It's easy for you to say when all you've gotten from this marriage of yours is gains. But for someone who got nothing but a bad reputation for being human, I don't think I can forgive you, River." "I don't know what happened with you,

    |||||I watched Xander glaring at something and looked over in the direction. My eyes widened. What was he doing here? “Two million and a hundred thousand.” Someone else bid. “Three million.” Xander bid, gritting his teeth. “Five million.” Dave said. “Ten million.” Xander barked right back. I gasped and so did so many of the others. “Xander, that's a bit excessive.” I muttered, leaning closer to him but Xander was busy glaring at Dave, who was smirking back at him. At us. “Ten million dollars, going once, going twice, and sold to Xander King.” The auctioneer cheered and so did the rest. “Xander,” I started but he cut me off. “Does it matter? It's for a good cause anyway.” I sighed. I could see that his mood had shifted considerably. I could sense the currents of fury rippling underneath his skin. It was like the old Xander King was back. It was as if he would explode at any point right now. And it was obvious that I was not the only one who felt the shift. I caught Gra
