CHAPTER NINE: RARE SMILES AND DANGEROUS THOUGHT

CASPIAN'S POV

I opened the front door and stopped immediately.

My aunt Helena, stood on the other side. She looked shocked when she saw me. Her eyes widened for a second before she controlled her face again.

“So you actually came home,” she said, sounding shocked. But her voice was still cold, like always.

“Aunt Helena.” I stepped aside and let her in. She walked into the house and looked around. Then she saw Serena sitting at the kitchen island, still eating the lunch I had made. Helena glanced at her. She didn’t say anything. She just nodded once. Then she turned back to me.

“There was a board meeting today,” she said. “And you missed it. You didn’t pick your calls. Then I remembered I had left my phone upstairs.”

She continued speaking while she held a folder in her hand. “I came to give you the documents myself.”

Helena glanced at Serena again. The look was short and sharp. Then she turned and handed the documents to me. Gave me a sharp look and then walked out of the house without another word. The door closed behind her with a soft click.

I locked the door and looked at Serena. Her face looked uneasy. She had stopped eating for a moment. The calm expression she had on earlier was gone. I knew Helena’s presence always made her tense. My aunt had that effect on most people.

I walked back to the kitchen and sat down across from her again. We went back to eating in silence for a few minutes. The food was still warm. I watched Serena take small bites. She was careful not to look at me for too long.

I decided to tell her the news.

“Lucas has been moved to the top of the list. He's now a priority.” I said softly.

Serena’s head snapped up. For a second she just stared at me. Then her face broke into a real smile. It was bright and full. Something I rarely saw. She only smiled like that when she talked about her brother. The smile reached her eyes and made her whole face soft.

“Really?” she asked. Her voice was full of hope.

I nodded. “Yes. The procedure is set. You can go and visit him whenever you want. His doctor would contact you directly about everything.”

Serena’s smile grew even bigger, clasping her hands in front of her, she said softly, “Thank you, Caspian. Really. Thank you very much.”

I looked at her smile and felt something tight in my chest. I wanted to see that smile more. I loved it. I knew I shouldn’t. Attachment was a weakness. Helena had told me that for years. It has been ringing in my head for years. Emotions destroyed my mother. I had built my life on control. But right now, looking at Serena’s happy face, I didn’t care about those rules. I wanted to make her smile more.

I cleared my throat and looked down at my plate. “Remember the dinner tonight.”

Serena nodded, still smiling. “I remember.”

I stood up and walked toward the stairs. When I reached the bottom step, I looked back. Serena was still sitting at the island. She thought I had gone upstairs. She started doing a small happy dance in her seat while she continued eating. Her shoulders moved a little. Her head bobbed. The smile was still on her face.

I stood there and watched her for a few seconds. Something warm spread in my chest. It was dangerous. I knew it was. But I couldn’t look away.

I turned and walked up the stairs. My mind was full of her smile. The rare one. The one that only appeared when she talked about Lucas. I wanted to see it again. I wanted to be the reason for it more often. Even if I knew it was a bad idea.

In the room, I closed the door and sat on the edge of the bed. The documents Helena had left were still in my hand. I put them on the nightstand without opening them. Work could wait. For the first time in a long time, work could wait.

I thought about what she was doing in the study earlier. I would look further into that.

I also looked forward to the dinner tonight. I had planned it on purpose. I wanted more time with her. More of that smile. More of the way she looked when she forgot to hate me for a moment.

My phone buzzed on the bed. A message from Nathan. I ignored it for now. Everything else could wait.

I leaned back and closed my eyes. Serena’s smile stayed in my mind. The happy dance. The soft thank you. The way her face lit up.

I knew I was in trouble. I had married her to control a scandal. Now I was staying home from meetings just to cook her lunch and watch after her.

Helena would call it weakness. I called it something else. Something I wasn’t ready to name yet.

I stood up and walked to the window. Outside, the city buzzed. Inside this house.

Tonight at dinner, I would watch her again. I would try to make her smile one more time. Even if it was dangerous. Even if it went against everything I had been taught.

I wanted that smile. And I was starting to want the woman who wore it.

Then suddenly, a ringing tone snapped me out of my thoughts.

I glanced around. It wasn't my phone.

It was Serena's.

“Serena!” I called out as I walked towards the sound. I found it on the nightstand. I picked it up and the name across was strange.

“A”

Who is “A”?

Before I could pick it, Serena appeared in the doorway, looking panicked.

“Stop.” she yelled, snatching the phone from me with an unbelievable speed.

My brows furrowed. “What the fuck, Serena?”

CHAPTER FORTY: THE STUDYCASPIAN'S POVI left the room when the sun was already high. The tray of food she had left outside my door was still on the floor, untouched and cold. I stepped over it without stopping. The hallway was empty. Her bedroom door was closed. I did not knock. I did not call her name. I simply walked downstairs, took my keys, and left the house. The drive to the office felt longer than usual. My mind kept turning the same thoughts over and over. The product leak. Damian’s launch. The missing files from the night I first met Serena. The lookalike on the camera footage. Every piece sat next to the memory of her voice on the other side of my door that morning, quiet and careful, asking if we could talk. The soft way she had said my name.I pushed the memory away.At the company, the atmosphere was still tense. People spoke in lower voices when I walked past. Screens still showed red numbers, even if the fall had slowed. A few department heads nodded at me in the hallw

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE: THE CLOSED DOORSERENA'S POVI was awoken by a sound from outside. It sounded like pots clanking Mrs Ellis was probably here already.I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling for a long time. The house was too quiet. I listened for any sound from the hallway or from his room. There was nothing, there was no footsteps, no low voice on the phone. There was no movement at all.Caspian had not come out. Or he left very early.I sat up in bed and rubbed my face. My body still felt heavy from the long night of waiting and worrying. The message from A sat in my mind like a stone. . Those words kept coming back every time I tried to think about something else. Did they go for Caspian because I said no? Was A affiliated with Damian Cross?I got out of bed, washed my face with cold water, and put on simple clothes. Then I walked into the hallway and stopped in front of his door.I stood there for almost a full minute before I raised my hand and knocked. No answer.I kno

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT: THE DOORCASPIAN'S POVI shut the door in her face. The solid click of the lock felt final. For a moment I stood there with my forehead nearly touching the wood, breathing hard through my nose. On the other side of the door Serena was probably still standing in the hallway after running up the stairs and calling my name. The soft concern in her voice when she had asked me to hold up only made the anger in my chest burn hotter. I could still hear the quiet way she had said my name. It made everything worse. I hated it. I hated that she made me feel this way.I turned away from the door and walked deeper into my room.Anger was easier than everything else. The board meeting had dragged on for almost five hours. Five hours of red numbers, sharp and pushing questions, legal hedging, and the same ugly truth repeating itself. Damian Cross had beaten us to market with our own product. Investors were furious and conflicted. The board was split between those who wante

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN: WHEN HE CAME BACKSERENA'S POVI was still awake when the front door finally opened. The sky outside the windows had turned totally dark. The television was still on mute, the red stock chart frozen on the screen from hours earlier. My phone sat on the cushion beside me. The house had been silent for so long that the sound of the door felt louder than it should have.I checked the time and it was one in the morning. Then I heard footsteps crossing the foyer.I stood up slowly. My legs felt stiff from sitting too long. I had not slept. I had only waited.Caspian walked into the living room looking like he had been through a war. His shirt was wrinkled. His tie was gone. There was a roughness around his eyes that I had only seen a few times before, usually when something serious threatened the company. The usual sharp control was still there, but underneath it I could see the exhaustion. He stopped when he saw me standing there in the dark with the television sti

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX: I TOLD YOU SOSERENA'S POVThe study felt too quiet after he left.I stayed bent over the desk for a few seconds longer, my cheek still against the wood, trying to catch my breath. My body was still trembling from how close I had been. The place where he had been inside me felt empty and sore. The huge shirt I wore was bunched under my arms. My panties were still pulled to the side. The cool air of the room touched skin that had been warm under his hands only moments before. He had been right there. Then the phone rang, his whole body went rigid, and everything stopped.I slowly pushed myself up. My legs felt unsteady. I fixed my underwear and pulled the shirt back down over my hips. The room still smelled like sex and his cologne. Papers were scattered across the floor where they had been knocked aside. The desk was a mess of open files and the edge of the desk still pushed out of place.I stood there in the middle of it, alone. For a long moment I did not know wh

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE: SILENTCASPIAN'S POVThe red line on the screen kept falling.I stood in the center of my office with the entire executive floor still in controlled chaos behind me. Voices overlapped. Someone from the legal department was arguing on the phone. Another person kept refreshing the market data as if the numbers might change if they stared hard enough. The headlines at the bottom of the display repeated the same story in different words: Damian Cross had launched the product. Laurent International had been beaten. Shares were in free fall. The red numbers updated every few seconds, each drop another cut.I forced my voice to stay even.“Get me every department head who had access to the final package. Now. I want names, timestamps, and clearance logs on my desk in twenty minutes.”People moved. The cluster outside my door broke apart as orders were relayed. Someone hurried toward the elevators. Another pulled out a phone and started making calls in a low, urgent voic
