LOGINElara
To say I was shocked to see her standing in my front door would be an understatement. Why was she here early? Did Louis know she arrived earlier than they planned? My eyes narrowed at her but that didn’t seem to faze her.
The smug on her face only seemed to deepen. Ignoring me completely, she strolled into the house, pushing past me like she owned the place. I gritted my teeth, clenching my fist to keep from lashing out.
“What are you doing here?” The question escaped my lips before I could stop myself.
Celia turned around sharply, an innocent smile flirting up her face. “Oh,” she said softly, a spark of amusement dancing in her eyes. “Louis was expecting me to arrive tomorrow. But I planned a small gift for him.” She shrugged.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, gripping my luggage so tight my knuckles turned white. Even now, when I thought I’d let go of everything , I couldn’t help the jealousy that surfed in my chest.
Celia was beautiful, even more than she was in the photos I’d seen. Beautiful red hair cascaded down her back in a wave of bouncing curls, a stark contrast to my short brown which framed my face.
I’d decided to change my hairstyle and color from red and long to short and brown because I knew that was what Louis preferred. Still, he hadn’t batted an eyelash my way, let alone notice me. Celia had blonde long hair and he was head over heels for her.
I smiled bitterly.
Her puppy doe eyes assessed me and her lips pouted in disappointment. Just then, she suddenly looked frail, her eyes darted to the door frantically and she pretended to faint right there at my feet.
I frowned, wondering what this was about but just as the door opened and Louis stepped, it clicked. I watched as his eyes widened in alarm at seeing Celia on the ground. He ran for her, carrying her into his arms swiftly while shooting daggers at me.
“Elara Dubois!” he shouted, the veins on his neck standing. “What did you do?”
I was about to open my mouth and argue that I did nothing. I didn't even touch her but Celia was faster. She held out a hand, then smiled softly. “Don’t blame her, Lu. I’m sure she only acted out of the vastness of her love for you. If I was in her shoes, maybe I’d have done the same thing.”
Louis shook his head. “You wouldn’t have,” he defended. “I know you, you’re kinder than that.” He turned his heated stare on me and all I saw there was loathing. “She, on the other hand, is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”
He clenched his jaw as he began moving to his bedroom, Celia still nestled in his arms. Without looking back, he said; “Leave my house this instant and don’t try to reach me until I reach you.”
Without waiting for his last words to drop, I began walking away – there was no reason left for me to stay here. When the news of our falling out got out, my parents would be livid but I knew Grandma would take my side.
She always did and besides, she already had a countermeasure in place to help me.
With that in mind, I stepped into the night taking nothing from the house but my luggage. All the gifts he’d sent to me in the past, I left them behind. After all, he hadn’t done those out of love but because his grandfather kept mounting pressure on him.
Knowing Louis wouldn’t appreciate it, I didn’t take any of his cars and opted to call a cab instead. I glanced out the window as he drove me back to my apartment. Once we arrived at the sprawling building, I let myself out and looked up at it with a sense of longing.
Once, this two story building had been my entire life. It had been my home and my place of comfort but for the past three years since the engagement, I had never stepped foot. Instead, I’d left it in the care of my best friend.
That best friend now peeked through the blinds at me. Her eyes squinted then she came running to the door with a look of surprise on her face. When she saw me standing there, luggage in hand, she squealed.
“Elara!” she gasped, her eyes already teary. Seeing her at the verge of tears broke the dam inside me and I broke down myself, the tears flowing like a river down my face as she held me in her arms.
I don’t know how long we stood there crying, communicating without words all my hurt, pains and patience which resulted in nothing but more pain, but by the time the tears eventually dried out, we were both exhausted and the car had disappeared.
Denise looked around then pulled me into the house, snatching my luggage with me. “That jerk broke your heart!” she said coldly once we were both settled on a stool in front of the kitchen counter. “I will kill him.”
I shook my head, sipping the steaming cup of coffees she’d given me. “There’s no need. Officially, we are still together. I don’t know if he plans to announce his relationship with Celia in the future but for now, I have to keep going to these events with him. To keep up the charade.”
Denise looked at me like I was completely out of my mind. “Don’t tell me you’re still trying to make the jerk fall in love with you. El, that –”
I patted her arm softly, urging her to drop the topic. “I’m a bit tired, Nini. Maybe tomorrow we can talk more about it? For now, I just want to… sleep and forget all about the last three years.”
Her eyes softened and she nodded as understanding dawned on her. “Alright.” She answered, standing up from the stool to stand behind me and give my shoulder a soft squeeze. “I wish I could stay with you tonight but it’s my shift at the ICU. Your room is in immaculate condition though. I cleaned it out daily.”
I smiled at her, reaching out to squeeze her hand. It was only then that I noticed the scrubs she was wearing. A wave of nostalgia hit me as I watched her. Denise and I had graduated medical school together and while she’d never become a practicing nurse, I’d taken one year off to attend a culinary competition as the prodigy of one of the most renowned chefs.
Although I’d won the competition with flying colors, it didn’t matter because that same year, I threw everything away to become the fiancée of the love of my life. I regretted that decision every single day.
Just as I walked Denise to the door, my phone buzzed with a new notification but I waited until Denise was gone to open it. It was a message from my mentor and looking at it shocked me. I didn’t think he would reach out to me, not after three years.
The message said he’s sent me an urgent mail and I hurried to check it.
ElaraI could barely keep the smile off my face.Everything was falling perfectly into place, piece by piece, like fate had finally decided to apologize to me for all the misery Louis had dragged me through. The meeting room smelled of polished wood and expensive coffee. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting sharp lines across the long conference table. Louis sat at the head of it, trying to look composed and in control, but I knew him too well. I could see the tension in the way his fingers tapped against the table whenever the investor asked difficult questions. And the investor had asked many.I sat quietly beside the presentation screen, observing everything while pretending to organize files on my tablet. Across from us, Mr. Victor flipped through the documents with calm precision. He was older, experienced, and far too intelligent to fall for Louis’s polished lies.Still, somehow, the meeting had gone smoothly.Better than smoothly.“I must admit,” Mr. Vi
LOUISThe hotel room was quiet when the door clicked shut behind us. Soft golden lights reflected against the polished walls, and the large windows overlooked the city below. Celia walked farther into the room slowly, her heels tapping against the floor before she turned to me with a smile.“It’s beautiful,” she said softly. “I’m glad it’s for us.”I loosened my tie and dropped my suitcase beside the bed. “You like it?”“I love it.”She moved toward the window while I watched her carefully. There was satisfaction in her expression, the kind that came whenever she felt like she had won something important. Maybe she believed this trip meant we were finally moving toward the future she wanted. She turned back to me again. “You need to change your pin.”I frowned slightly. “What?”“Your cards. Your accounts. Everything.” Her expression hardened. “Elara still knows them.”At the mention of Elara, tension slid quietly into the room.“I’ll change them when we get back to town,” I said calml
Elara Three hours later, I arrived at the airport with my luggage rolling behind me and exhaustion sitting heavily on my shoulders.I expected peace.Instead, the first people I saw were Louis and Celia.I stopped walking immediately.Celia’s lips curved into a smug smile while Louis looked equally irritated to see me.I raised a brow. “I thought your flight had already left.”“It was delayed,” Celia answered before Louis could speak. “Looks like we’ll all be on the same flight now.”The disappointment in her voice amused me.I scoffed softly and walked past them toward the waiting area.I could feel Celia staring holes into my back as I sat down and pulled out my phone.A message from Alistair appeared instantly.Did you get there safely?A small smile tugged at my lips.Unfortunately.He replied immediately.I miss you already.Heat crawled into my cheeks despite myself. For the next several minutes, I stayed focused on my phone, chatting with him while the airport noise faded into
ElaraI froze the moment Alistair pinned me against the wall. His body pressed dangerously close to mine, heat radiating from his skin as his dark eyes held mine captive. My breathing became uneven instantly. For days, I had tried not to think about him.I tried and failed.Every night since the last time we were together, memories of his hands on my body had haunted me. The way he touched me. The way he looked at me like he wanted to ruin me completely. And the worst part?I wanted him to.My pulse pounded wildly as his fingers brushed lightly against my waist.“You came here angry,” he murmured.I swallowed hard. “I came for answers.”“But you stayed.”His voice dropped lower, rougher. The tension between us snapped.I grabbed his shirt and pulled him toward me before crashing my lips against his.He kissed me back instantly.Hungry.Like he had been waiting for it.A soft gasp escaped me when his hands slid down my back possessively. My fingers tangled into his shirt as the kiss dee
ElaraI barely had enough time to calm my nerves before I threw on a fitted black dress and rushed out of the house. My mind had been spinning since the call from Louis’ grandfather. An emergency meeting. Mandatory attendance. His tone alone had told me this was not something small.By the time I arrived at the company headquarters, the atmosphere inside the conference room already felt suffocating.Celia was there. Of course she was.The moment our eyes met, she glared at me so viciously that it almost made me laugh. If hatred could kill, I would have dropped dead before reaching my seat. But I ignored her and settled into the chair across from Louis. He looked exhausted.Dark circles sat beneath his eyes, and his jaw remained tight like he had not slept all night. For a second, guilt flickered through me after everything that had happened between us recently, but it disappeared the moment Celia leaned closer to him possessively. The conference room doors opened before another though
ELARAThat night, I refused to pick up Alistair’s calls. The first time my phone rang, I stared at his name until the screen went dark. The second time, I tossed the phone onto the bed and walked into the kitchen for water I didn’t even want. By the fifth call, Denise had started glaring at my phone like it had personally offended her.“Are you going to answer him?” she asked from the couch.“No.”“He’s persistent.”“He’s irritating.”Denise sighed and muted the television. “You look like you’re about to commit murder.”“I might.”I curled deeper into the blanket wrapped around my body. My chest still burned from everything that had happened at the company. Celia owning shares. Alistair acting blindsided. Louis looked furious.None of it made sense.Or maybe it did, and I was simply the idiot in the middle of a game everyone else understood.Denise moved closer and rubbed my shoulder gently. “You should sleep.”“I can’t.”“You need to try.”I finally looked at her. “What if he lied to
