LOGINElena’s POV
I crumpled onto the floor, heartbroken by Lucian’s painful words and his cruel distrust. Not to mention Lydia’s betrayal.
Drawing my knees into my chest, the tears flowed from my eyes as I choked back sobs.I’ve loved Lucian for so long. Our marriage couldn’t end like this. It just couldn’t.Our marriage hadn’t started with love. Lucian’s grandmother had been my benefactor.I was an orphan, and she’d stepped in to fund my education.Once I’d finished school, she insisted that Lucian marry me.Lucian had resisted at first, but He had no choice but to compromise with his grandmother. Which suited me just fine, since I’d always had a crush on Lucian. It was a secret, intense crush, one that I kept close to my heart. Lucian didn’t reciprocate my feelings. Not at first. But I believe that I could win him over.Lucian had been cold and distant at first. But over the past few months, something had shifted. And now we were having a baby.Wiping away the tears from my cheeks, I stood up.
I couldn’t just sit here and let him walk out on me.Deep down, I honestly believed that if I could just explain everything to Lucian, he’d realize that I’d done nothing wrong. So, I decided to go to the hospital to get the real medical report, so I could show Lucian that I was a loyal and devoted wife after all.At the hospital, I found my obstetrician and asked her to print off the original medical report for me.But as I stood out in the hallway, waiting for the report, I heard a familiar voice."This is wonderful news."Turning my head, I saw that the voice was coming from an office, the door slightly open."Lucian and I couldn’t be happier."Lucian?Furrowing my brow, I crept towards the office. Peeking inside, I was shocked to see Lucian and Lydia sitting at a desk across from an obstetrician.Their backs were turned to me, but it was them for sure. What were Lucian and Lydia doing in an obstetrician’s office?Together?"Well, you’re not very far along yet, but so far, the baby looks perfectly healthy," the doctor said, flashing them both a smile.Baby?Lydia was…pregnant? My mind began to race."Pregnancy hormones can affect your wife's mood. As the father of the child, you should take her out into nature more often. It will help her stay in a good mood," the doctor said."I will, doctor," Lucian replied, his voice protective. "I’ll make sure she gets plenty of rest."What?!Lydia was carrying Lucian’s baby?A wave of shock washed over my entire body, making my vision blur.Something inside of me snapped. Lucian had accused me of cheating on him, when really, he was the one cheating on me?I flung the door open. Lucian and Lydia both froze, their heads whipping toward me."Elena?" Lucian frowned, his voice cold. "What are you doing here?""What am I doing here?" I choked out. "I’m watching my husband and my best friend stab me in the back. That’s what I’m doing!"I looked at Lydia’s stomach, then back at Lucian. The truth hit me like a physical blow."Is it true? Are you really carrying his child?"Lydia didn't look guilty. Instead, she stepped closer to Lucian, a smug smile playing on her lips."Yes, Elena. I’m pregnant. And Lucian is the father.""Enough! Stop making a scene," Lucian yelled, his eyes full of impatience."If you want to act like a madwoman, do it at home. Don't embarrass yourself here!"Normally, I would have shrunk away—I used to fear his disapproval more than anything. But now, I couldn't back down."You’ve been having an affair this whole time..." I marched toward them, my voice trembling."Stop being dramatic," Lucian snapped. He immediately stepped in front of Lydia, shielding her from me as if I were the monster."This has nothing to do with Lydia. She’s fragile right now. Don't you dare touch her."Lucian held her tightly in his arms, as if she were his wife. And I was like a monster with bared fangs and claws.
His hateful gaze hurt me. I held back my tears—there was no more ironic scene than this.
"Lucian, don't do this to me..." I reached out my hand, begging my husband to tell me it wasn't true. But he turned a blind eye to me and held Lydia's hand tightly. The way they looked at each other... Clearly, they’d been sneaking around for some time.It was written all over their faces.Suddenly, I realized something. "Is this why you lied about the medical report?" I asked Lydia, my face incredulous."So Lucian would think I was an adulteress and kick me out? You framed me?"Lydia didn't snap back. Instead, she shrank back into Lucian’s chest."Elena, how can you say such horrible things?" Lydia sobbed and clutched Lucian’s arm tighter."I’m pregnant so I am weak. Lucian is just protecting me. Your affair has nothing to do with me. You felt Lucian couldn't give you more companionship. Don't try to drag me into your mess just because you're bitter."Her words were like slaps to my face. I couldn’t believe this!My blood boiled. Infuriated by her audacity and overcome with anger, I lunged for her.
But Lucian caught me mid-lunge and shoved me hard in the chest.Caught off guard, I stumbled backwards a few steps. And then…Thud. My body landed on the hard ground.Lucian marched over to me, menace in his eyes.Towering over me, he glared.“Lydia is far kinder than you! She's nothing like someone as despicable as you!” He hissed. "You disgust me. How dare you barge in here like this and start tossing out accusations? You’re nothing but a cheating woman! Pregnant with a another man’s child!
I can’t even stand to look at you. You’re pathetic."Looking up at him from the floor, I saw the pure disdain and hatred in his eyes. His cruel words settled into my heart like thorns. There wasn’t even a glimmer of guilt in his expression. He didn’t care about me. He never had. While he glared down at me, the thorns in my heart turned to ice.And my love for Lucian died, like a withered rose left out too long in the bitter cold. One Year Later…Elena’s POV“Elena. Come back to the house. I have a surprise for you.”Lucian’s text came through on my phone and I smiled. I was sitting at the pond, our private pond, feeding the ducks. We’d moved into this new house about five months ago, and it was perfect. A sprawling estate with a pool, tennis courts, a stable, a massive garden, and a house far bigger than we’d ever need.It had taken a long time to find the perfect house, and Lucian had been incredibly patient. The moment I saw this house though, I knew. It was the one. It was the house I would spend the rest of my life in.Lucian had given me everything I could ever want. He showered me with expensive gifts and designer clothes. We went out regularly to eat at the most exclusive restaurants. Sometimes I felt like I had to pinch myself, like I was living in a dream, a real-life fairy tale.As I finished reading the text message, a news article flashed onto my screen. It was about Lydia. Her court date was loomi
Elena’s POVLucian was waiting for us back on the patio. He’d cleaned up the glass, and tried to fix the table. It was still a little lopsided, but it was usable. He’d also relit the candles. He was sitting on a chair, his hands wrapped around a wine glass. When he saw us coming, he looked up, a terrified look in his eyes.“Well?” he said, standing up so fast he almost spilled his wine. “How was the talk?”“It was fine,” Leon replied. “But sit back down. We have something we want to talk to you about.”With a perplexed look, Lucian sat down back down. He eyed us both suspiciously, but I shook my head.I knew what he was thinking. He thought I’d chosen Leon and that’s what we wanted to talk to him about. I would tell him that wasn’t the case. After we discussed the business deal. Leon was planning on leaving as soon as the conversation was done. I wanted to tell Lucian in private that I’d made my decision.“This is about business,” I said. “Not about this little love triangle.”Leon h
Leon’s POVI kept a pretty calm demeanor. Although I was shaking inside. When Lucian told me it was my turn to go and see Elena, my heart leapt up. She’d chosen to see Lucian first. In my mind, that meant she was saving the best for last. Which was me.I’d practically skipped down the path to the garden. I couldn’t wait to tell her all about the beautiful life I had planned for us.As I got closer to her though, I saw her face. And the expression in her eyes said it all.I didn’t stand a chance. She’d already made her choice. And it wasn’t me.Pausing for a beat, I felt a crack in my heart. How was this possible? Those were my first thoughts. I’d been so certain that she would choose me. I hadn’t even entertained the thought of her choosing Lucian.Maybe I was imagining things. Maybe I was just being paranoid. But the more I looked at her face, the clearer it became.I lost. He won. She wanted him. Not me.The wind knocked right out of me. She was stunning, standing there in the moon
Elena’s POVLeon walked towards me. But he took one look at my face and stopped.“I’ve already lost, haven't I?” he said.My chest squeezed. I really hated this. I wished he’d never had feelings for me. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt Leon. He’d saved me. Bought me plastic surgery. Gave me a job and a new life.If I could have loved him, I would.“How did you know?” I whispered.“Your face,” he said. “You might not think so, but I know you very well, Elena. I knew the moment I saw your face that you’d already chosen Lucian.”His voice was low. He was doing his best to hide his heartbreak, but it wasn’t working. I could see right through the thin façade of a smile. The clouds broke just then and moonlight flooded down. It hit his eyes.“You’re so handsome,” I said. “I don’t if I’ve ever told you that before. But you really are.”I meant it. He was, with his dark hair and bright eyes. He was shorter than Lucian, but more muscular in build.“You haven’t,” he said, his lips tuggin
Elena’s POVHis lips on mine ignited a fire inside of me that had been sleeping for a long time. Greedily, I kissed him back. I reached around and clawed at his back. Our kiss deepened. He furled his hands in my hair. There was nothing else in that moment. Just him and me and our hot, wet lips. I gave myself over to the kiss completely. That is..until I snapped back to the present.I broke the kiss and took a step back. With a gasp, I brought my fingers up to my lips. Lucian held my gaze, his eyes steady and intense.“I’ve missed that,” he said with the tug of a smile.I was speechless. My heart was still racing from the kiss.“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Lucian teased. “I guess you forgot what it was like to kiss your husband?”I had forgotten. I’d completely forgotten the heat and the passion that Lucian had once shared. But it was all coming back to me now.“Elena,” Lucian said, stepping towards me. He took one of my hands in his. “I know I already said this before. But I’m
Elena’s POVThe fight had come out of nowhere. That’s how I felt. One moment, we were eating a nice dinner. And the next? The men were rolling around on the ground, punching each other in the face.I was devastated. I knew they were fighting over me. But this was the last thing I wanted. Glass shattered, the table broke, the wine spilled. I watched it unfold, horrified by what I was seeing. The sound of their fists hitting each other cracked through the otherwise silent night. They yelled profanities at one another. They were like savage beasts.I would expect this from two men who grew up on the streets. Or at a skeezy bar somewhere after too many cheap beers. But both of these men were CEOs of highly successful companies. This simply wasn’t how high society behaved. I was mortified and embarrassed for both of them.Lunging at Lucian, I tried to pull him off. But I wasn’t strong enough. So I did the only thing I could think of.I begged them to stop.Thankfully, that worked. They fin
Elena’s POVThe look in Lucian’s eyes rattled me.“Let me go,” I demanded. Lucian kept his gaze steady, staring deeply into my eyes with an expression I couldn’t quite place.Anger? Confusion? Desperation? After a moment though, Lucian released his hold on me. I immediately took a step back from hi
Elena’s POV"The pasta here is incredible," Leon said, refilling my wine glass with a deep red merlot. "I know how much you love carbonara."Laughing softly, I relaxed into my chair and sipped my wine. It was an upscale but intimate restaurant, with candlelit tables and a small jazz band playing in
Elena’s POV“Shall we?” I asked, turning to Leon. Now that we’d secured the island bid, it was time to go. Lucian glared at me as Leon protectively placed his hand on the small of my back to lead me out of the room. However, as we were leaving, Meredith and several other people stepped in front of
Lucian’s POVI closed the front door of our home, and slung off my jacket. A deep exhaustion had taken hold of me and I intended on retreating to my private study and having a good, stiff drink. However, as I entered the hallway, I heard Ava’s soft cries.Entering the living room, I was dismayed to
