Chapter 5

Penulis: Peachy
Pain tore through my entire body. But the deeper pain was the despair of being completely abandoned.

Fragments of memories flashed through my mind.

The first time I saw Victor, he sat behind his massive desk. His glasses reflected a cold light. I provoked him. He didn't care.

The first time he pinned me down, he called me Angel. His voice was deep and raspy. I thought that was love.

Countless nights, I lay in his arms. I listened to his steady heartbeat. I thought I finally found a home.

The final image froze in my mind. Victor lunging to protect Chloe without hesitation.

I was left behind to face the danger alone. Like a bystander he could just throw away.

I opened my eyes again. I was lying in a VIP hospital bed.

The room was quiet. I could hear Victor on the phone outside my door.

"Chloe, does it still hurt?" His voice was so gentle. It felt foreign to me.

"It's much better, thank you, Victor," Chloe's voice was weak. "If you hadn't grabbed me in time, I might have..."

"Don't think about that," Victor comforted her. "The doctor said you were just in shock. No physical injuries."

"Victor, if it happens again, you'd still save me first, right?"

Victor didn't hesitate. "Of course."

"But Serena got hurt..."

"She has no reason to be mad," Victor's voice was calm and rational. "In an emergency, of course I'd save you first. You were severely injured before. Serena is tough. She's not fragile like you. She'll understand."

I closed my eyes. It felt like someone just twisted a knife into my heart.

In Victor's eyes, I didn't even have the right to be angry.

Footsteps approached. My door opened.

Victor stood there. He saw I was awake. There was no guilt on his face. "You're awake?"

"Yeah," my voice was hoarse.

"The doctor said you have a mild concussion and scrapes on your leg. Nothing serious," Victor said. "I've arranged the best medical team. I'll stay here and take care of you for the next few days."

"Thanks," I said. I stared at the ceiling. "I'll pay you back for the medical bills in ten days."

Victor frowned. "What are you talking about? What happens in ten days?"

"I said I'll pay you back." I turned my head and looked at him. My eyes were flat. "And for my stay at your place. I'll settle it all at once."

Victor's expression went rigid. "Serena, there's no need to be so calculating with me."

"Why not?" My voice didn't have a single ripple of emotion. "We never meant anything to each other anyway, did we?"

A long, dead silence filled the room.

Victor looked like he wanted to say something. In the end, he just said, "Get some rest."

Over the next few days, Victor stayed in the hospital. He took care of me.

He checked on me regularly. He made sure the nurses gave me my meds on time. He even had a five-star hotel chef deliver my meals.

But I stayed cold and distant.

I didn't cry. I didn't throw a fit. I didn't demand his attention.

I treated him like a kind stranger. Polite, but extremely cold.

This new version of me made Victor very uncomfortable.

On the afternoon of the third day, Victor sat in the chair by my bed. He watched me listlessly flip through a Vogue magazine.

"Serena," he started.

"Yeah?" I didn't look up.

"About that night..." Victor paused. "I saved Chloe first. But it wasn't because I didn't want to save you."

He continued. "Chloe is physically weak. She's been severely injured before. She couldn't handle that kind of impact. It was the only logical choice..."

I put the magazine down. I cut him off. "I know."

Victor looked at me. A strange, unreadable emotion flashed in his eyes. "Are you really not mad?"

"Do you want me to be mad?"

Just then, a commotion erupted in the hallway.

"Hurry! Get her to the ER!"

"What happened?"

"Miss Chloe had a severe allergic reaction to a medication! She's in anaphylactic shock!"

The color drained from Victor's face.

He shot up from his chair. "I have to go handle something," he said urgently.

He walked to the door. He looked back at me one last time. "I'll come see you later."

I listened to his rushed footsteps fade down the hall. I closed my eyes. A deep wave of exhaustion washed over me.

Chloe successfully snatched Victor away from me again.

I had no energy left to fight for him.

Besides, in a week, he'd be free to fly away with her anyway.

Serena’s POVVictor had to return to New York to deal with a corporate warfare crisis triggered by Julian's sniper attack on his business. On the third day he was gone, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the island villa, watching the last sliver of the sunset fade.A maid quietly walked in. "Madam, please have some milk."I didn't move. "When is he coming back?""Mr. Victor said that once he finishes his business, he'll immediately—""Smash!"The crystal glass shattered against the wall. "I'm not your 'Madam'," I sneered. "Get out."The terrified maid scrambled out of the room. I bent down and picked up the sharpest shard of glass.——Victor's POVMeanwhile, at the Sterling Group headquarters in New York, Victor sat at the head of the conference table, his thumb unconsciously rubbing his phone. The screen displayed a security feed: Serena standing on the beach, staring at the horizon. Serena’s POVVictor forcefully took me to a private island in the Bahamas in the Caribbean Sea. He used his air traffic control connections to lock down the entire island's airspace. The seawater here was so blue it was heartbreaking. White beaches stretched as far as the eye could see.But no matter how beautiful the scenery was, it couldn't hide the cruel truth—I was a prisoner. When the plane landed on this private island Victor had bought long ago, I realized he had already cut off all external communication signals on the island. No internet. No phones. Even the radio was jammed."Welcome to your new home, Angel." Victor stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the cliffside villa, his voice carrying a sick sense of satisfaction.I looked at him with a cold smile. "The mighty CEO of a tech empire reduced to using tactics like this to imprison a woman. You're pathetic.""Pathetic?" Victor turned around, eyes burning with a paranoid fire. "Even if I have to lock you away where no

Serena’s POVThe day before the wedding, I sat at the vanity in the bridal suite, my fingertips gently brushing over the diamonds on my wedding dress. The sun was shining brightly. Outside, the staff were bustling about, setting up the ceremony.Everything looked so perfect.A soft knock came from the door."Serena?" Julian walked in, holding a cup of warm Ceylon tea and a delicate little velvet box.He was wearing a tailored black suit. His eyes were incredibly gentle."You barely ate anything for breakfast," he said, placing the cup next to my hand.I looked up, a soft smile on my lips. "Are you lecturing me now, Julian?""I wouldn't dare." He leaned down and handed me the box. "I'm just afraid you'll get hungry."I opened the box. Inside were exquisite Italian handmade chocolates."I heard you used to love the chocolates from this shop," Julian said softly. "I had them flown in from Milan."I paused, a little surprised. Just as I was about to speak, the estate's security alarm sudde

Serena’s POV"The Hayes Group and the New York tech circle have always stayed out of each other's way. What is Victor Sterling doing here?"The guests started whispering. The low murmurs spread across the ballroom. All eyes zeroed in on the tall figure at the door."Why is he staring at Ms. Serena like that? Don't tell me he's here to crash the wedding."Almost instantly, Julian pulled me into his arms, using his body to shield me. But I was surprisingly calm.I looked at Victor and smiled. "Mr. Sterling, what brings you here? Dropping off a wedding gift?"My words were like a knife stabbing deep into Victor's chest. His jaw clenched. The veins on his neck popped. His voice was incredibly hoarse. "Serena, come back with me."My smile widened. "Come back for what? To watch you take care of Chloe?""I don't love Chloe!" Victor's roar echoed through the ballroom. Serena’s POVI let out an exasperated laugh."Then why were you hiding? You didn't show your face for a week, but you kept sending gifts. What kind of plan is this? Trying to buy Wall Street for me?"Julian's ears turned even redder. He mumbled, "...I hadn't picked out the perfect gift yet."Me: "..."I took a deep breath and asked the most important question. "You said you've had a crush on me for a long time... Have we met?"Julian's eyes flickered, and he finally looked straight into my eyes. "Serena, do you really not remember?""Ten years ago, at a yacht party in Malibu...""Did you forget who you saved?"I froze. My memories were pulled back ten years. At that party, I was standing on the deck when I heard a splash.A little boy had fallen into the water.
