CHRISTIAN

If Alfred hadn’t called me, she would have left.

That thought alone makes me want to tear something apart.

She would’ve left me. Just like that, duffel bag slung over her shoulder, dog in tow. If Alfred hadn’t gone outside to look for Bolt, to see her sprinting down the driveway with Bolt and called me, I never would’ve known. She didn’t even bother to leave a note.

And now she’s back—escorted by the cops I had to own on to bring her and Bolt home, thanks to me pulling every string I had left to make sure she didn’t leave this town tonight.

I’m sitting on the edge of the bed when I hear her boots on the stairs. Heavy. The door slams open so hard it nearly bounces off the wall, as she shuts it with another loud bang.

“What the hell was that, Christian?” She demands loud enough. “What’s the meaning of that stunt?!”

I didn’t move. I just let my eyes drag up to hers, “Lower your fucking voice.” My jaw tightens. “We’re not the only ones in this house.”

Her shoulders heave, her ha

CHRISTIANAs we stepped off the plane, Liam fell into stride beside me and slid his phone into my hand without a word.“It’s your father,” he muttered.I blinked at him, my brow furrowing. My first instinct was to pull my own phone from my pocket—except there wasn’t one. There hadn’t been since the night I swung that bat at Maria’s hand and heard it shatter as it hit the floor. I hadn’t thought twice about it then. My entire focus had been on making her scream, and getting the truth out of her. I hadn’t had time to replace it.Now, holding Liam’s phone felt foreign. I pressed it to my ear. “Hello—”“We can’t find Penelope.”Those four words stopped everything.I froze in the middle of the jetway, my chest constricting as if someone had shoved a fist into it.“What do you mean you can’t find her?” My voice came out sharper than I intended.“I employed guards for her,” his voice came slowly through the receiver. “It was your brother’s idea ever since I announced her pregnancy at the par

PENELOPEI still couldn’t stop thinking about the party.Edward had gone all out for his third tenure celebration, as expected, all the chandeliers in the hall had sparkled, every senator and socialite he’d ever known had shown up, and the room smelled like expensive perfume and old money. I finally met Governor Nylander, he had approached me that night, and to say I wasn’t scared was a fucking understatement. I was terrified! Not by his looks, no, his aura. Nylander was a fine specimen, he reminds me of Christian somehow. How they carry themselves like they’re on top of everyone else. “Mrs Hilton, you look gorgeous in person.”“Thank you Governor. I’m really sorry about what happened.”“Sorry? Why are you sorry for something that was out of your control?”“It still happened and I owe you and your family an apology, God knows what your wife must have probably gone through.”“The kids are fine, my wife is beautiful, probably drinking champagne somewhere over there. And with that be

CHRISTIANThe smell of sweat and blood was already filling the air when Liam opened the door for me.Renji stood in the middle of the warehouse, sleeves rolled to his elbows, with his arms crossed, watching her as if she were some pathetic little mouse squirming under a cat’s paw.Maria was strapped to a chair, her wrists bound to the armrests with leather straps. Her face was a mess, her hair plastered to her damp cheeks, mascara streaking under her eyes, and blood running from her nose where I'm sure Renji had already introduced her to his fists. Her eyes widened when she saw me, “Oh my God, Christian. Help me please.” She whined.I laughed. I actually laughed because her performance was crazy. She stared at me in disbelief.“You’re here because of me.” I said sitting on the couch, and crossing my legs.“What?” She looked confused. “Why?”“I know you poisoned my wife. The green juice you specifically made for her that morning before your flight.”“I didn’t do any–“ she was cut up wi

PENELOPEBy the time I finally woke up, I reached for my phone on the other end of the couch, the time reading 6:45pm. “God,” I groaned. “How long have I been asleep for?” Blinking sleep out of my eyes as I unlocked the screen, going through my notifications.I had a missed call from Chris, and two from Jess followed by their text messages. I opened Christinans’ first.Chris: I called Alfred when you didn’t pick up, he said he had just checked in on you, and you were still sleeping. I had to rush to Tokyo, something came up at the branch here and I needed to be present. I’ll be back in two days. How are you? How do you feel? How’s your head? I’m sorry the questions are too much, text me back when you’re up.A quiet smile tugged at my lips even as I read it twice over before replying.Me: Sorry I missed your call, I was still sleeping. The meds have their crazy effect. I’m fine Chris, don’t worry too much. I hope work goes well, come back soon.I sent the first one, before typing agai

CHRISTIANI gripped the wheel harder, Jess’s voice still playing in my head. “I hate even saying it. She’s been nothing but sweet to you. But… doesn’t it seem… off? Like. You drank one glass and your body went haywire. Doesn’t that say something?”The knot in my chest tightened with every word, every replay of that damn conversation. The dashboard beeped when I crossed eighty, but I didn’t slow down. My phone rang. I pressed the speaker.“Yeah.”“You’re gonna want to hear this,” Liam’s voice said. “I’ve got a lead. You wouldn’t believe it.”“Yeah? I’ve got something to tell you too. But before I get to the office, I’ve got to make a quick stop.”I ended the call without waiting for his answer and swung the car into the next exit.I walked straight past the receptionist at Kerr Industries. She tried to stop me, but I didn’t hear a word she said. I threw open the doors of the conference room.Damian looked up mid-sentence, his executives turning with wide eyes. I didn’t stop. I grabbed

PENELOPEIt had been a week since I came home from the hospital, and if I thought Christian and his family were protective before, this week proved me wrong. The gifts still kept coming.A new silk robe, a velvet box with a delicate diamond bracelet, a ridiculous bouquet so large it couldn’t fit through the doorway, A pink teddy bear so big it practically needed its own chair. A set of sterling silver rattles — rattles, for goodness’ sake. All from Edward. My father-in-law had apparently taken “I’m going to be a grandfather” as a license to spoil me into oblivion.Even now, one of the boxes sat open on the coffee table as Jess lounged on the other end of the couch, scrolling through her phone and groaning about the latest delivery.“He’s really going all out,” she muttered, glancing at the silk baby blanket folded neatly next to me. “A whole baby blanket made of cashmere? Are we raising the royal baby or what?”I smiled faintly, fingering the soft fabric. “I think he’s just… excited.
