Chapter 39.2

I frowned when I saw that the call was from an unregistered number. I was about to answer when the cashier called me. She told me the total of our hospital bill, so I reached into my bag, took out my card, and handed it to her.

When I looked back at my phone, the call had ended. Just as I was about to return it to my bag, it rang again—another call.

"Hello?" I answered, still frowning.

"Are you the guardian of Lauren Buenaventura?" asked the voice on the other end of the line.

Fear and panic immediately gripped my heart for reasons I couldn't explain. I swallowed hard and tightened my grip on the phone.

"Y-yes. I'm her mother. Why? What happened?" I asked nervously.

"Her classmates saw her suddenly collapse at the cafeteria..." I blinked rapidly, and after that, I could no longer hear the rest of what the caller was saying. The only thing running through my mind was that Lauren had fainted.

My mind went blank and I suddenly felt short of breath. Panic began to take over.
