Chapter 207

~Niklaus~

The flight home was the longest of my life.

Not because of turbulence or delays or any practical reason. What could have happened to make grandfather that was so excited for our trip cut it off before it ended?

We had tried, for the first hour or so. We went through every possibility we could think of.

"Could it be the company?" Kesley asked, her legs tucked under her, facing me. "Some board issue that came up suddenly?"

"Grandfather would not cancel our honeymoon for that

Chapter 219~Niklaus~The Specter mansion felt colder than usual as I walked through the massive front doors. I was heading to my grandfather’s study. I had decided I didn't care about the board members or the stocks anymore. All I could think about was Kesley's face the last time I saw her.I found Grandfather sitting behind his desk. He didn't say a word at first. He just stared at me with those sharp, gray eyes that seemed to see through every lie I had ever told. He let the silence stretch out, trying to make me feel small. "I have one proposition for you, Niklaus," Grandfather finally said. His voice was calm. "If you agree to it, I will look over everything you have done. The scandal, the fake marriage…. I will make it all go away. Your name will be clean again."I leaned against the doorframe, my hands shoved deep into my pockets. I didn't even bother to sit down. "And what is the price for this kindness?""Leave the girl alone," he said. It wasn't a request. It was an order.

Chapter 218~Fred~It had been three days since the world fell apart at the Specter mansion, and I felt like I had aged ten years. My life had become a constant cycle of checking on Niklaus, answering angry phone calls from the board members, and trying to keep my own head above water. I had barely seen Taraji in all that time. Niklaus was in a dark place, and as his best friend, I couldn't just leave him to drown in his own guilt. We texted, of course. We sent small messages back and forth. "Are you okay?" and just generally ask about her day. The weight of the break up had put a heavy strain on us too. It was hard to be romantic when your best friend is falling apart and the woman you like is protecting the person he's desperately searching for. I felt like I was caught in the middle of a tug-of-war, and I was starting to fray at the edges.Every time I looked at my phone, I hoped for a message from Taraji that would fix everything, but the silence between us was growing louder.T

Chapter 217~Taraji~The classroom was a mess of glitter, glue sticks, and laughter. This was my happy place. Being a teacher meant that for eight hours a day, I didn’t have to think about the anything, my own drama with my parents. I just had to worry about whether Leo was going to eat his blue crayon or if Sarah was ever going to finish her drawing of a giraffe."Okay, class! Listen up!" I clapped my hands in a rhythm, and twenty little heads looked up. "If your giraffe has five legs, it might be a monster. Let’s stick to four, please!"The kids giggled. Leo held up his blue crayon, his mouth stained slightly sapphire. "But Miss Gilbert, my giraffe is an alien!""Well, alien giraffes are allowed, but only if they don't eat the crayons," I said, winking at him. I loved these moments. They were simple. They were real.Just as I was helping a student with their scissors, the door opened. I looked up and saw Amanda walking in. She had taken a lot of time off work lately, and honestly, t

Chapter 216~Kesley~I woke up on Taraji’s couch with the sun stinging my eyes. My head felt heavy, like it was filled with cotton. For a moment, I forgot everything that had happened at the Specter mansion. Then, it all came rushing back. I had to meet Dan today. I had texted Dan, and I wasn't going to back out. I needed to close one door so I could figure out how to lock the other. I met him at the Cabin Restaurant. It was a quiet, secluded place with wooden booths that hid you from the world. Dan was already there, looking exactly like the boy I used to follow around like a puppy. He smiled when he saw me, a smile of his I am used to."Kesley," he said, reaching across the table to touch my hand. "It’s been too long."I pulled my hand back gently to reach for the menu. "Hi, Dan."For the first twenty minutes, he did all the talking. He acted like no time had passed at all. He talked about our years growing up together, how we were best friends, and how he remembered every little

Chapter 215~Niklaus~I hadn't slept at all. I hadn't eaten. My phone sat on the desk in front of me. I had called Kesley so many times that I lost count. Every time the call went to voicemail, it felt like a tiny piece of my heart was being ripped away.At this point, I didn't care about the company. I didn't care about the billions of dollars or the Specter name. It all felt like junk compared to her."Fred!" I shouted. I didn't even look up when the door opened."I’m right here, Niklaus," Fred said. His voice was calm, but I could tell he was tired too. He had been running around all night trying to help me."Did you confirm where she is?” I said, finally looking at him. My eyes felt heavy and dry. "Is she fine?”I did not want to guess if she was at Taraji. I had someone check her house too but he reported back to me that she was not there.Fred walked over and stood by the window. "She is at Taraji’s place. I haven't seen her with my own eyes, she’s making sure I don't see her, b

Chapter 214~Kesley~For now, I am crashing at Taraji’s place. It’s beside Fred's apartment, but right now, it feels safer than any mansion. I’ve been trying my best to stay out of the way, especially when Fred is around. I like Fred, but I know how the world works. He’s Niklaus’s right-hand man. I am sure he knows I am here, and it’s only a matter of time before he tells Niklaus everything.I do hope he doesn't come.My phone has been buzzing constantly. Niklaus has been calling and texting, but I can’t bring myself to pick up. Every time I see his name on the screen, my heart painfully aches. I’m not ready. I don't have the words to say anything or make a decision. So, I just let it ring.Today, though, I had to put my feelings aside. Today was for Kim. I stopped at a small shop near the hospital to buy flowers. I chose a bright bouquet because Kim deserves all the color in the world after being stuck in a hospital bed for so long. When I walked into her room, I saw her standing
