THEO

Theo stood still with both hands in his pockets as he watched Adalyn’s retreating back. He never in his wildest imagination thought he would ever see her again, especially in a place like this. The past few minutes had seemed unreal.

Why hadn’t she recognized him? Theo thought.

She spoke to him with no flicker of recognition in her eyes…like she was talking to a stranger.

Five years.

Five years of looking for answers, of standing in his study at three in the morning wondering if she was

AdalynAdalyn’s throat went dry, her legs so stiff she couldn’t move. His imposing figure stood in the doorway, blocking the ray of light coming in. The ash sweater stretched lightly across his firm muscles…outlining his defined chest and abdomen, paired with straight-cut dark jeans. The casual look made him look different. He didn’t look like the man who had worn a dark suit yesterday. It should have made him look ordinary. But it didn’t.“You came,” she said, then immediately regretted how breathless it sounded.“I make it a duty to honor invitations.” His grey eyes swept the café once, taking it in, before returning to her. “Especially one from a five-year-old.”Somewhere behind her, she heard Mrs. Green’s soft intake of breath, followed by the unmistakable sound of the older woman finding an excuse to be very busy near the pastry showglass, close enough to listen.“Right. Of course.” Adalyn clutched the mug tightly. “Sit wherever you’d like.”Walking past her with the quiet confid

ADALYNAfter putting Daisy to sleep, Adalyn couldn't bring herself to leave her daughter's room. She sat on the edge of the mattress in the dim light…watching the steady rise and fall of Daisy’s chest, compulsively resting two fingers against the small wrist to feel her pulse. The quiet of the house was suffocating. Every time she closed her eyes, the phantom screech of tires tore through her head, forcing her awake with a gasp. When she finally crawled into her own bed, sleep eluded her. Her brain buzzed with activity, dragging her back to the sidewalk, the violent surge of panic, imagining possible outcomes and then… to him.The man from this evening. How he had looked at her. Like he was studying her. Reading her. Like he was searching her face for something that he had lost and wasn’t expecting to find it in a stranger. The way he called her name. The way she’d reacted when their eyes met.She was so sure she had never seen him before. Never.Yet..the memory of his scent, sa

Theo thought. She spoke to him with no flicker of recognition in her eyes…like she was talking to a stranger. Five years.Five years of looking for answers, of standing in his study at three in the morning wondering if she was alive, if she was safe. And now, here she was, standing a few feet away from him on a sidewalk in Claremont, and had looked at him the way a person looks at a stranger who's been good to them. Grateful. Polite. Nothing more.Pressing the heel of his hand against his eyes…he breathed until the tightness in his chest loosened enough to let air back in.It didn't make sense. Unless something had happened to her. Unless something had gone so badly wrong, it just didn’t make sense that she didn’t kno

ADALYNAdalyn was speechless as she stared up at the stranger standing in front of them, so close that she could perceive his scent of sandalwood and pine, thinking it smelled oddly familiar."I’m so sorry," she managed to say as she straightened herself, her voice throaty, unrecognizable even to her own ears. All plans to lash out on the stranger were forgotten, after all she was to blame for not holding Daisy's hands. "I didn't know when she ran into the road. Thank you.”He did not respond. He stared at her with widened eyes and mouth gaping open, like he’d seen a ghost. Maybe the near accident had rattled him so much that it made him speechless, Adalyn thought.Crouching, she pulled Daisy into her arms again, clutching her tightly, her own heart thumping wildly so that it hurt to breathe. The familiar smell of the SheaMoisture kids shampoo she used in washing her daughter's hair filled her senses as she pressed her lips to the top of her head, reminding herself that she was still

ADALYNFIVE YEARS LATER…A scream tore through the house at 5:30 a.m as Adalyn jolted awake, her heart pounding. She pressed a hand to her chest and forced a slow breath. She had been having the same dream for five years. It always felt so real, like a memory safely tucked away in her brain. She’d see herself running in a wedding gown. Then the dream changes to a car exploding right in front of her and a voice calling out her name. Each time she came close to seeing the face, she would wake up.It had been five years and missing part of her memories were still not back. The more she tried to remember the harder it became. She was always met with nothing.“Mommy?” A little voice called out to her.Adalyn looked up. Daisy stood in the doorway clutching Mr. Bunny, a stuffed toy she never slept without.“Hey baby, come here.” Adalyn opened her arms, and Daisy climbed straight into them.“Did I wake you up?” Adalyn asked.“I heard you scream.” Daisy peered up at her. “Are you having a bad d

ADALYNThe emergency room doors burst open. Two nurses pushed a stretcher into the room as fast as they could. Adalyn lay on it, completely still. Her shirt was partially soaked with blood, and her face was pale.“Female, late twenties!” one of the paramedics shouted. “Found unconscious at the scene of a vehicle accident”“What’s her blood pressure?”“Eighty over fifty!”“Pulse?”“Thready. One hundred and twenty-eight!”A doctor rushed toward the stretcher.“Put her on the monitor. Oxygen now.”A nurse quickly placed an oxygen mask over Adalyn’s face.“Her oxygen saturation is dropping!”“Get two large-bore IV lines in.”The room exploded into movement. One nurse cut through the blood-stained fabric around Adalyn’s arm while another inserted an IV cannula.“Line is in.”“Start normal saline.”The doctor checked Adalyn’s pupils.“Pupils are unequal. She’s got a head injury.”“Doctor, she’s not responding!”“Miss, can you hear me?”There was no response. The doctor pressed two fingers a
