I was halfway through changing into a fresh shirt when my phone buzzed again.

Leo.

The screen flashed with his name for the third time in less than ten minutes. The urgency in his messages had been enough to make my hands tremble. I picked up the call.

"Leo?" I said, breathless.

"Get out of that penthouse. Now."

His voice was sharp. Almost panicked. Leo was many things... calm, rational, annoyingly level headed but I’d never heard him like this before.

I grabbed the phone tighter. "What’s going on?"

He hesitated. "You’re not safe, Ariana. I found something. Evelyn... she didn’t die the way they said. And it wasn’t just her. There were others."

My stomach dropped. "What others?"

"Other women. Former employees. Whistleblowers. All connected to Navarro Corp. They either disappeared or were found dead in accidents that never made the news. But their names? They’re all in a restricted database. Evelyn’s included."

I turned slowly toward the hallway, where Ethan was. He had just gotten out

The second those words left Ethan’s lips, the air in the room shifted. That’s not him.The quiet wasn’t peaceful anymore... it was heavy, like the walls themselves were holding their breath with us. My pulse thudded in my ears, drowning out the hum of the single light bulb above.Three knocks. Again. Exactly the same rhythm.I glanced at the woman by the door... her hand was already wrapped around the hilt of her knife, knuckles white, blade still hidden but ready to strike. Isla was curled up tighter in the corner, her small frame shaking though she was silent.“Do we move?” I whispered, barely forming the words.Ethan’s gaze flicked toward the window, then the single exit. “Not yet.”The handle rattled. Just once.Every muscle in my body went rigid. Whoever it was, they weren’t trying to be quiet anymore. They wanted us to hear.“Ethan...” the woman started, but he cut her off with a sharp gesture for silence.Another pause. Then, a voice. Low. Almost friendly. “Open the door, Ethan

The room smelled faintly of dust and old smoke, the kind of scent that clung to forgotten places. Faded wallpaper peeled from the walls in thin curls, and the single bare bulb above us cast a yellow light that flickered every few seconds. Ethan guided Isla toward the far corner, away from the windows, while the man who’d opened the door—tall, wiry, with sharp features carved by a lifetime of suspicion—shut it quickly behind us. The sound of the lock clicking into place was louder than it should’ve been. “Where’s Marcus?” the man asked without looking at me, his gaze fixed on Ethan. “Dead,” Ethan said flatly. The man’s jaw tightened. “When?” “Two weeks ago.” Silence stretched, thick and heavy. Then the man let out a slow breath, his shoulders sinking as if part of him had been expecting that answer all along. “You brought trouble with you,” he said finally. “Not by choice.” The man’s eyes flicked toward Isla, studying her for a moment too long. His expression softened just en

I didn’t let go of Isla’s hand. Not even when my lungs began to burn and the cold night air scraped against my throat like glass. We darted between narrow brick walls, the alley’s dim light stretching our shadows ahead of us. Ethan moved in front, every muscle in his body coiled and ready, his eyes scanning every corner. The woman...Isla’s guardian was behind us, glancing over her shoulder every few seconds like she expected someone to leap from the darkness. The sounds of pursuit were faint but unmistakable boots against concrete, the occasional metallic clink of a weapon shifting in its holster. Whoever they were, they weren’t rushing. They knew we’d run. They were just letting us wear ourselves down before they closed in. Ethan raised a hand sharply, signaling us to stop. We pressed against the rough wall, the cold seeping into my skin through my coat. His voice was barely a whisper. “They’re too close. We can’t go straight to the car.” The woman tensed. “Where then? You think

For a heartbeat, the room felt suspended in time. Her small frame on the staircase, the faint light casting shadows across her face, the way her fingers curled tightly around the wooden banister — Isla was still, but her gaze was alive. Watching. Studying. And in that gaze, I saw it. Recognition. Not the kind that comes from memory, but from something older, deeper. The kind that sits in the marrow of your bones before you even know what it means. She had Ethan’s eyes. Ethan didn’t move. He didn’t speak. I wasn’t sure he could. His chest rose and fell as if each breath cost him more than he had to give. The woman — her guardian, I guessed — stepped quickly between us, breaking that invisible thread. “Isla, sweetheart, why don’t you go back upstairs?” But Isla didn’t budge. “Who is he?” she asked, her voice clear, curious, and just a touch defiant. Ethan’s throat worked, but no sound came out. I stepped in before the silence could grow heavy enough to choke us all. “We’re jus

The words hit me harder than any storm I’d ever stood in. That girl… might be my daughter. For a moment, the world shrank. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway became deafening. The folder in my hands felt like it weighed a hundred pounds, and the photographs blurred beneath the heat of my own unsteady breathing. I blinked once. Twice. Trying to process. “You’re… telling me you could have a child out there?” My voice trembled, but I wasn’t sure if it was from fear, jealousy, or something deeper—something I wasn’t ready to name. Ethan didn’t flinch. He stood there, in that shadow-lit study, hands in his pockets, shoulders taut. His jaw was clenched the way it always was when he carried the weight of an entire world on it. “I don’t know for sure,” he admitted quietly. “But everything I’ve uncovered points to that possibility.” I stared at the birth certificate again. Evelyn’s name was clear. The father’s section was… blank. My chest tightened. “And you nev

I didn’t know how long I had been sitting in the garden, barefoot and silent, my fingers twisting a single rose petal between them. The house behind me was quiet, but I knew the silence was only temporary. Eventually, I would have to face Ethan again. He hadn’t come after me. Not when I stormed out of the room. Not when I shut the door to my bedroom. And certainly not when I ended up outside, needing air that didn’t feel like it was filled with fire. I should’ve felt relieved. But instead, all I could feel was… lost. “Running away again?” My spine stiffened at the familiar voice. Leo. I didn’t turn around right away. I was scared that if I looked at him, I’d fall into the safety he always brought and that was the last thing I needed right now. Still, I answered. “I’m not running. I’m breathing.” “I see,” he said, walking closer. “Because your lungs weren’t working inside the house?” I finally glanced at him. He was dressed casually white shirt, sleeves rolled up, jeans. But hi
