I woke with a jolt, my body heavy from another night of fractured sleep. A sharp knock pulled me upright, and Mrs. Thornton’s voice cut through the door, firm but tinged with urgency.

“Lena, get up. Mr. Castelli wants you in his office.”

I rubbed my eyes, exhaustion clinging to me like damp cloth. “Now?”

“Now, honey.” Her tone was gentle but left no room for debate.

I pulled on a sweater, and shuffled down the hall. The door was ajar, his silhouette sharp against the morning glow.

He sat behind his desk, a glass of whiskey in one hand, papers scattered like a battlefield. Mrs. Thornton followed me in, her presence a quiet anchor in this house of steel and secrets.

“You’re going for a checkup,” Leo said, his voice flat, not looking up. “Thorough. Non-negotiable.”

Is this his plan to get my body checked?

My stomach twisted, irritation flaring. “A checkup? I’m fine. I don’t need some doctor poking at me.”

His eyes flicked up, dark and unyielding. “You’ve been through too much, Lena. I’m

I should’ve been asleep, but instead I was creeping down the hallway in my slippers, heart beating too fast for someone supposedly going for “air.” My steps stopped in front of Leo’s office. The door gave way with a soft creak. I slipped inside. His scent hit me first, faint cologne, smoke, and leather. His desk sat like a silent judge in the center. I hesitated only a second before pulling open a drawer.Files. Papers neatly stacked. I slid one out, skimming the page. Names. Codes. Locations I didn’t recognize. My chest tightened. I knew I shouldn’t look further. But my hand twitched toward the next file…Footsteps.I shoved the file back, slammed the drawer, and darted for the door. And nearly collided with him.Leo stood in the dim hallway, his gaze like a blade.“Couldn’t sleep?” His tone was calm, but his eyes burned into mine.“I… wanted some air.”“And your air,” he said slowly, leaning in, “was in my office?”Heat rushed up my neck. I looked away, scrambling for an excuse. Not

“Sit.” His voice was steady, not sharp, but it left no space for debate.I sank into the chair opposite him, fiddling with my fingers. “You wanted to talk?”He leaned back, studying me for so long I shifted under his gaze. Finally, he said, “You’ve asked me things I haven’t answered.”My chest tightened. “Like what?”“Like who I am. What I do.” His gaze didn’t waver. “You’ve put the pieces together, haven’t you?”I hesitated. “I kinda have a limited material to work with.”His mouth twitched, the shadow of a smirk. “Depends on the source you asked.”I exhaled. “Then maybe you could answer instead of leaving me in the dark.”He didn’t reply right away. He swirled the glass of water in his hand, then set it down. “There are things about me… about this life… that aren’t simple. Things that can’t be explained in neat words. And I don’t know if I want you carrying that weight yet.”“So you’re protecting me?”His eyes flicked to mine. “That’s one way of seeing it.”“Then what’s the other wa

I woke up to silence. No movement beside me, no steady breathing that could only belong to Leo. The curtains were drawn tightly shut, blocking out all traces of daylight, and the heavy blanket was tucked securely around me as if someone had taken their time to make sure I didn’t get cold.I slid out of bed, feet touching the soft rug, the air in the room cool against my skin. My first thought was to check Leo’s office.Maybe he was working, like always. The office was empty. The desk was bare except for a closed laptop and a neat stack of papers. The leather chair was pushed in. He hadn’t been here in hours.I made my way downstairs, the scent of something sweet lingering faintly in the air. When I reached the kitchen, Mrs Thornton was there, stirring something on the stove. She looked up, smiling. “Oh honey.”“Hey,” I murmured, stepping in.“Come here.” She waved me closer, then pulled me into a hug before I could react. “I know meeting his parents didn’t go well.”I let out a faint,

The living room was grand and cold, all polished marble floors and tall windows spilling winter light. Leo’s hand rested at the small of my back as we stepped in.Two figures were waiting. His father was tall, square-shouldered, with silver hair combed neatly back.Dario? His mother looked elegant in a cream suit, her posture straight enough to cut glass.“Mother. Father,” Leo said, his voice calm but clipped. His father’s eyes flicked to mine briefly before returning to Leo. “You didn’t mention you were… bringing someone.”Leo’s grip tightened fractionally. “My wife,” he said evenly. “Lena Castelli.”That got their attention. Both parents turned to me fully, their faces not softening in the slightest.“Nice to meet you,” I managed, forcing a small, polite smile. His mother's eyes skimmed over me with slow precision. “Lena… who?”“Lena Lynx Grey,” I answered, keeping my voice steady. Then, after a small pause, “Castelli.”Something flickered in both their faces, subtle but there. A gl

I was still stretching under the covers when the sound of the door opening reached me. The faint creak was followed by Leo’s low footsteps across the rug. Before I could even lift my head, his shadow fell over me. He bent down, pressing a warm kiss to my lips.“Good morning,” he murmured.I made a sleepy noise in response, rolling halfway onto my side. “Morning.”“We have somewhere to go today,” he said, straightening a little while still sitting on the edge of the bed.I yawned, blinking up at him. “Where?”“My parents’ house.”The fog of sleep cleared instantly. I froze mid-yawn, staring at him like he’d just told me he’d sold me again. He raised a brow. “That bad?”I shook my head so fast my hair whipped around my face. “No. No. Another time.”His mouth twitched not quite a smile. “What’s wrong?”“It’s… weird,” I said, clutching the sheet a little tighter.“That’s not the real reason.” His tone softened, but the mafia authority in it left no space to dodge.I sighed. “I’ve never re

Marcello was leaning against the stone railing when I stepped into the courtyard, one leg crossed over the other, a faint curl of cigarette smoke drifting up from his hand. The afternoon sun warmed the stone under my feet, and a light breeze stirred the potted rosemary beside the wall.“I was looking for you,” I said.A slow smile curved his mouth. “Careful, Lena. Around here, saying that could start rumors.”I crossed my arms, raising a brow. “And what exactly would they say?”“That the boss’s wife has a soft spot for his right-hand man.” His grin widened a fraction.I shook my head with a faint smile. “I think I’ll survive the gossip.”He chuckled and took another drag before flicking the ash away. “So, what’s on your mind?”I stepped closer, feeling the warmth of the sun against my back. “That night… when you talked to Leo. You said something that stuck with me.”His brows lifted. “I say a lot of things.”“You know exactly what I mean.” I tried to hold his gaze. “You made it sound
