“Say that again,” his voice rumbled low, steady but lethal.

Marcello’s jaw twitched. “Didn’t mean to interrupt, Leo. We were only… talking.”

“That didn’t sound like talking.” Leo’s steps were measured as he closed the distance between them. His eyes cut straight through him. “Sounded like you forgot your place.”

Marcello leaned against the wall, feigning calm. “Maybe I got tired of watching you treat her like something you own.”

My chest tightened. My gaze bounced between them. “Marcello, stop…”

“Don’t tell him to stop,” Leo snapped, his eyes cutting to me for only a moment before fixing back on Marcello. “He knows exactly what he’s doing. I want to hear him say it again.”

Marcello smirked, a small laugh leaving his lips. “What difference does it make? You heard me. She heard me. You just don’t like that I said it in front of you.”

Leo took a step closer. His movements were calm, deliberate, but I saw the way his hands curled, the way his jaw clenched tight enough to crack bone. “You’

The floor trembled beneath me before the sound even reached us. An explosion ripped through the outer wall, shaking the entire compound. Dust cascaded from the rafters, thick and choking. My ears rang as shouts erupted, men barking orders in panic, weapons cocking and clattering.Another explosion ripped through the outer wall, rattling the chandeliers, showering dust from the rafters. The hall filled with the metallic snap of rifles and the clatter of overturned furniture shoved into makeshift barricades.Gunfire split the night. Short, vicious bursts outside the walls, closer, closer, until I could feel it inside my chest. My breath caught. Leo.Marcello’s eyes found mine across the chaos. He looked… alive. Thriving on the panic, his smile twisted, his coat hanging open like a madman’s cloak.“Bring her here!” he roared.Hands gripped my arms, bruising me as they yanked me forward. I stumbled, my knees nearly buckling, until they shoved me hard against Marcello’s side. His arm clamp

They moved me again. The ropes dug deeper into my wrists as they dragged me down another set of unfamiliar corridors. The air was different here…colder, heavier, smelling faintly of damp stone and gun oil. Another compound. Another cage. They shoved me into a chair, the light above swaying in lazy arcs. Marcello was already there, perched casually on the edge of a desk like a king waiting for his entertainment.“You travel well, Lena,” he mocked, eyeing the bruises on my arms. “Maybe captivity suits you after all. Quiet. Controlled. That stubborn spark of yours looks dimmer every day.”I glared, refusing to give him the satisfaction of silence this time. “If I’m quiet, it’s because I’m saving my strength for when Leo puts an end to this circus.”His smirk wavered, just for a second, then his eyes darkened. “You really think he’ll get to you in time? Or at all?” He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a mocking whisper. “What if I told you he’s already given up? That every hour you si

LEO'S POV Pain exploded at the back of my head. A white-hot flash burst in my vision. My knees buckled, my gun clattered to the floor. I turned, just enough to see a shadow looming, before everything went black. When I opened my eyes, the ceiling swam above me. My head throbbed like it had been split open.I groaned, forcing myself upright. My body was heavy, sluggish, but I shoved the weakness down. I scanned the room.My throat felt raw, but my voice cut through the air like a blade. “Where’s Lena?”Silence. The rage stirred instantly. “Where is she?”Sasha flinched. Mrs. Thornton looked at the ground. Lena’s mother pressed her trembling hands to her mouth. My chest froze.No.“No.” My voice shook as I staggered to my feet. “Tell me she’s here. Tell me she’s safe.”Sasha whispered, “Leo…”“Tell me!” I roared.Their silence was my answer. She was gone.My vision blurred with fury, my hands shaking. The next day, I gathered them all in the grand hall…every ally, who had dared to take

Leo’s grip on my wrist was iron, unyielding. His eyes burned like storms as he leaned closer, his voice low and commanding.“Go back to our room, Lena. Now.”My chest tightened. “No. I’m not leaving you to face this alone.”His jaw worked as he pulled me closer, his breath hot against my face. “You’re not leaving me. You’re trusting me. For once in your life, just trust me to handle this.”My throat burned. “I do trust you, but I’m not letting you disappear on me again. Not after what happened the last time.”“Lena…”“No!” My voice cracked, my fingers curling tight into his shirt. “You don’t get to tell me to sit in a room and wait while you bleed out somewhere! I can’t…”His mouth crushed mine before the sobs could spill. The kiss was fierce, punishing, and desperate. When he pulled back, his hands framed my face, and his voice dropped to a whisper.“I will always come back to you. Do you hear me? Always, Lena. I will not leave you. But if you don’t go now, if you make me worry about

Enzo slammed his fist against the table. “We’ve wasted too much time. Whoever is out there is cutting us down piece by piece while we sit here wringing our hands.”Antonio shot back immediately. “And what do you suggest? That we march out blind and hand him our throats? You’d like that, wouldn’t you…martyr yourself and drag the rest of us into the grave.”Giovanni leaned forward, his voice biting. “Better a grave than a cage. He’s hunting us. We either fight or rot waiting.”“Your silence isn’t safety…it’s cowardice!” Enzo added. The noise pressed in, heavy, chaotic.Leo didn’t move. He stood at the far end, his arms crossed, his silence louder than their shouting. I sat stiff beside him, trying not to flinch with every new accusation that rattled the walls. When he finally spoke, his voice silenced the room like a blade cutting rope. “The one behind your burned homes, your dead families, your sleepless nights… is Marcello.”The silence after was suffocating. Then it shattered.“Marce

Marcello. The name alone felt wrong in my mouth, bitter as poison.“You’re telling me Marcello planned this?” My voice was thin, trembling, barely mine.Leo’s gaze didn’t waver. “Yes.”I shook my head, shaking it harder when he didn’t blink. “No. No, Leo, you don’t understand. He was here with us. He fought alongside us. He…he helped protect me when…”“That’s why it worked.” His voice cut sharp enough to slice through bone. “That’s why I didn’t see it coming. He stayed close. He wanted me to trust him. And I did.”“No.” The denial tore out of me, desperate. “You’re wrong. You have to be. Marcello was like family…”“He was never family,” Leo growled. He raked a hand down his face, eyes burning with rage that wasn’t aimed at me but scorched me all the same. “He wanted me blind. And I was. He played the loyal ally while he built the trap under my feet.”I wrapped my arms around myself, my whole body trembling. “But why? Why would he do this to you? To us?”Leo’s laugh was sharp, hollow.
