The sun felt warm on my skin, making me savour every second of it. Once again Mrs Thornton came to my aid getting permission from Leo to allow me go outside for some minutes.

I sat on the stone bench in the gardens, my legs tucked underneath me, my eyes drifting across the roses swaying in the cold breeze.

There was a book that was yet to be opened on my laps, my fingers toyed with its corners, but my mind was elsewhere.

Apparently I couldn't trust any of them.

I exhaled and leaned back, letting the breeze kiss my face, hoping it would soothe the anxious pounding in my chest that had become far too familiar these days.

That's when I felt it, that feeling when someone's watching you. I scanned the garden confused when I didn't find anyone or see anything suspicious until I came in contact with him.

He stood on his balcony, leaning against the tiles like he'd been there for a while. A cigarette dangling between his fingers, burning slowly like he hadn't taken a drag in minutes. His gaze

  • The Billionaire’s Captive Bride   Chapter 25

The house was cold, silent and still. No footsteps, no clinking plates or utensils, no low murmurs from the passing staff. Just the hum of the breeze and the faint rustling of trees outside the window.I sat on the bed with a half eaten piece of toast on my tray. Mrs Thornton had brought breakfast with her usual warm smile, but even she seemed…distracted today. She didn't say much, just gently encouraged me to eat and left quickly. After dressing, I wandered downstairs, hands in my sleeves. The hallways were unusually empty, except for Leo's regular guards, who now lingered in corners like shadows.I went to the kitchen but it was also empty, not a single staff member in sight. Was someone else killed because of me?I said, biting my lips as I headed outside.I barely made it two steps before one of the guards blocked my path.“I just wanted…to go to the garden.” I said, trying not to sound nervous.“No one's allowed to go there right now, Mrs Castelli.”His voice wasn't aggressive. I woke up with a start, drenched in sweat. My chest heaved like I'd been running for miles. The nightmares had felt too real - my dad's voice, the belt, the knives, the helplessness. It always felt too real because I felt everything. I felt every single thing which made it more painful and scary.I sat on the edge of the bed, hands shaking slightly as I rubbed my eyes. It took me a few moments to remember I wasn't back in that suffocating house, the smell of cigarettes and stale sweat, or at the club with drunk hands grabbing at my skin.I was here. In Leo's mansion.A knock snapped me out of it.“Come in,” I croaked, my voice scratchy from crying and probably screaming in my sleep again.Mrs Thornton walked in with a tray of breakfast, scrambled eggs, toast and fruits. “Good morning, dear,” she said gently, setting the tray on the nightstand. “You look pale.”I gave a half smile. “Didn't sleep much.”“You're not the only one. Mr Castelli was in his office all night.”“All night?”Sh

I woke up to a strange feeling in the mansion. I felt it the moment I stepped out of my room. The halls weren't just silent, they were cold. Not in temperature, I was used to that by now but rather in the energy. The maid who usually nodded at me in the mornings kept her eyes down and hurried past. One of the guards outside the west wing door glanced at me, then looked away so fast you'd think I carried a plague. At first, I thought I was imagining it.Until I wasn't.I saw Mrs Thornton with a trap of fresh linens, her brows furrowed in that quiet way she had when something was wrong but she didn't want to talk about it.“Is something going on?” I asked, watching her fold a towel with unnecessary precision. She didn't look up, “Just house matters.”“Everyone’s acting weird.” I said. ‘Did I do something wrong?”“Honey, they're just tired.”“Tired of me?”That made her pause, she glanced up at me, just a flick of her eyes and then went right back to folding.“Don't put thoughts like tha

Voices Shouting. Then silence. Then a crack.I opened my eyes, the ceiling spinning above me.As I sat up, I winced at the piercing headache that hit me. I instantly reached for the necklace, grateful that it was still there.“Lena?” Mrs Thornton’s voice came from the other side of the door. She sounded panicked, “Are you in there?”.I opened my mouth to respond but tasted blood. I was still trying to get myself in order when the door, was bursted open. Two guards entered immediately followed by Mrs Thornton. She knelt down beside me, her hand gently turning my face to the sides inspecting it.“Oh my Goodness, honey,” she whispered, brushing my hair from my face. “Can you hear me? Lena?”I nodded slowly, my mouth feeling too dry to speak as she helped me up to lie on my bed.She gasped when she caught sight of my temple. I guess the bruises must have been visible. Her hands gently touched my cheeks, turning my face to her…and that's when I saw him.Leo.He's back.He stood in the door

  • The Billionaire’s Captive Bride   Chapter 20

It's been a couple of days since Leo left for business, leaving the mansion quite quiet. He had gone even before the sun rose. Not like I was expecting any goodbye.Mrs Thornton had kept me company all morning, teaching me simple recipes. Her warmth was enough comfort for me and I appreciated her quiet presence nonetheless.“You know, I was never close to my parents.”“Why?”“They were addicts…they drank and they only gambled to also try and meet ends like me. They tried to overcome the betrayal they experienced in the past that caused them this unstable state they're in now.” I said, twisting the story to the best of my ability.“Is that why…they haven't reported your disappearance?”“It's for the best. I did make preparations for when a day like that would happen, so I'm sure they think I'm alright and that's all that matters.”I did make preparations because I felt like one day the ghost clan would catch up to me and probably take me away or end my life. That's one of the reasons I
