Days had gone by without any word from Ethan and Jessica couldn’t take it anymore. She drove immediately to court and filed for a divorce from Ethan Mitchell. He wanted it over so she was going to make it happen for him as she couldn’t take it any longer. He was already engaged to be married to his new bride and baby mama so she was going to respectfully remove herself from the picture.
Their marriage had been the worst five years of life, she had always set aside her needs and wants to please a man who wanted nothing to do with her. This was going to be the last time that was going to happen. “Ethan wants me gone?. Then so be it” She looked at the notifications on her phone and saw many missed calls from Kelvin, Ethan’s best friend, but she wanted nothing to do with him anymore. They weren’t even close to start with so why was he blowing her phone with calls and texts. He hadn’t done any harm to her but she was trying to cut off all that reminded her of Ethan, her new ex-husband. Few moments later and her lawyer called her in to let her know that the divorce papers were ready. For moment, Jessica’s heart stopped beating as took time to process this news. It was finally becoming a reality right before her eyes. “It’s time to flap your wings and fly, girl. This is the end of this marriage holding you back.” Jessica whispered under her breath as stared at the document which had her name on one side and Ethan’s name on the other side. Her family was rich and was one of the top families in Los Angeles so she needed no alimony from Ethan. She was willing to work away with nothing, as he had already broken her heart into so many pieces. All she needed from him was his signature on this piece of paper, knowing that she was still done with this loveless marriage even if he refused to sign. “This is for you, young one.” she placed a hand on her belly speaking to the child growing inside of her. Right there, she pulled of her wedding ring and flashed back to the time when Ethan got down on one knee and proposed to her. It was the best day of her life but here she was five years later taking that same ring off and dropping it on the lawyer’s table before walking off. How pitiful she looked in this moment. “Here you go. I’ve done my part so I’d wait for news when he has done his.” She said to the lawyer who was packing up the document to send to Ethan for his own signature. She took a breath of relief as she stood up to leave his office. “And the ring?” the lawyer asked before sealing off the document. “Yeah, send that too. It’s over, isn’t it?” * * “Two glasses of your strongest drink.” said Ethan as he hosted his friend, Kelvin in one of the most expensive clubs in the city. Kelvin had been his best friend since his college days so he knew no one to celebrate this good news with. He had been enjoying the previous night by Olivia’s side, cut away from the rest of the world. It was time to break the news to him. “What are we celebrating?. I have trying to get a hold of you for days.” Kelvin screamed into Ethan’s ear as the deafening music from the club played on. “Olivia’s pregnant!. I’m going to be a father!.” Ethan announced to his best bud as he clenched his glass and gulped all of its contents. Kelvin was taken aback by this news as an awkward silence took over both friends. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing as this now explained why Jessica had refused to take his calls or reply to his texts. Ethan must have cut things off with her so she must have retreated into her own shell. “What do you mean pregnant?. You cheated on Jess?.” Kelvin asked as he shoved his friend in the shoulder to find out more of what he was talking about. “It was a mistake but I’m glad it happened. Now I’m out of that mess called a marriage.” Ethan replied with a big smile on his face as he nodded his head to the beat of the songs playing in the background. “Wait a minute, Ethan. Does this mean you’re getting a divorce from Jess?.” Kelvin inquired, finally taking a sip of his drink. “F*** yeah. I’m free!.” Ethan screamed at the top of his voice to the ears of everyone who cared to pay attention. “Are you serious, man?” “How do you cut off a relationship of many years just because your side chic told she’s pregnant. Jessica gave you her all bro!. How could you?.” Kelvin said. He couldn’t comprehend what was going on and couldn’t believe that his best friend would be such a fool. Ethan wasn’t enjoying how his friend was bringing the mood down. He knew that Jessica had dedicated her life to loving him but he wasn’t going to let that hold him and living his. “I couldn’t breathe in my own home. Olivia became my peace so please don’t sit there and tell all that bullsh**.” Ethan growled at his friend before ordering a bottle of whiskey to celebrate more. “Olivia? Really, Ethan? You’re leaving a girl like Jessica for Olivia who loves you just for your money?.” Kelvin asked in anger. He knew Olivia was the type of woman to follow a man for all the expensive things she could provide for him. Ethan didn’t see it this way and this made him annoyed that his friend wasn’t going to know what he had until he lost it. Right there he concluded that Ethan was making a grave mistake by letting Jessica go back into the world. “Hey, are you on my side or hers?. I didn’t bring you here to be a joy kill.” Ethan said looking at his best friend in annoyance. “Bro, this feels like a wrong move.I don’t…” “F*** off man! I’m outta here.” Ethan declared before slamming the bill on the table before walking out of the club. “Ethan! Ethan, I’m sorry!”Jessica sat beside her daughter’s bed, her fingers gently tracing slow circles over the back of her tiny hand. The steady beep of the heart monitor filled the room, grounding her against the swirl of emotions causing turmoil inside of her.Ethan entered the room quietly, a paper cup of coffee in his right hand. “Figure you may need this,” he said, offering the cup to her.Jessica blinked at him, then took the cup. Her fingers brushed his, sending an unwanted shiver down her spine that had nothing to do with the cold hospital air. “Thanks,” she whispered slowly. He pulled a chair beside hers, settling down without saying another word. For a while, they just sat there, the low hum of machines the only sound between them.Jessica broke the silence first. "When did everything between us get so... complicated?"Ethan leaned closer to her, resting his elbows on his knees."Maybe when I stopped seeing you as someone who was enough for me," he said after a beat.Jessica stared into her coffee
The screen on Ricky’s phone dimmed, but the words from the text had been seared into his mind; Jessica curled up against Ethan, her hand resting on his; the intimacy he saw was impossible to ignore. He had come to the hospital with his heart racing, fear on every step he took, worried about Avery even though he and Jessica had just had an argument. Now, all he could feel was cold. The burn of betrayal wasn’t loud or fiery. It was still, quiet and creeping. Like a crack beneath the surface of something he’d convinced himself to forget. Deep down, he’d always known. But tonight made it real to him.His feet moved before he made the conscious decision to step back into the hospital. The door stood slightly ajar. Beyond it, the soft sound from Avery’s heart monitor pulsed like a clock to king down.Jessica stirred when the door creaked. Her eyes opened up slowly, then they widened as they landed on Ricky. She sat up fast, pushing herself out of the chair. “Ricky,” she whispered, alr
The rhythmic beep of the monitor was the only sound coming from the hospital room for a long while. Jessica sat next to Avery, her fingers brushing back the damp strands of her hair. She’d been humming, soft, quiet, just enough to soothe her little girl. The tune wavered here and there like her voice was on the edge of breaking forever.Ethan stood near the window, arms folded, watching both women.“She’s holding steady,” the doctor said to both parents, stepping into the room. “Her fever’s under control for now, but we want to keep her for observation. Her blood work shows signs of a viral infection, most likely the flu, but we won’t know more until the test results come back.”Jessica nodded, barely looking up at the doctor. “How many days?”“Two to three, minimum. She’ll need rest and fluids going into her. We’ll monitor for any secondary infections, just to be safe, so she doesn’t have to come back here.”“She’s going to be okay?” Ethan asked, his voice sounding tight. The
“Come on, Jess,” Ethan’s voice was tight with panic as he yanked open the car door. Jessica didn’t need to be told twice. Her heels barely even hit the floor before she was inside his car, slamming the door behind her. Ethan was already behind the wheel, his jaw locked, eyes cold and focused like a missile locked on a target as he reversed with a sharp turn. Her heart was already racing, but it slipped entirely when he blew through a stop sign on the road without slowing down.“Ethan!” She gaped, grabbing the dashboard.“Sorry, I’ve got this.” He said voice clipped. “I’m not wasting a damn second of our time.”Jessica twisted in her seat, fingers brushing Avery’s cheek. Her daughter’s head lolled in her arms like a doll, her skin flushed, her breath shallow and fast. Just as fast as they had returned to the house to get Avery.“Avery, baby, can you hear me?” she whispered, moving a strand of her daughter’s hair behind her ear. “It’s Mommy. I’m here for you, sweetheart.”Avery’
FEW WEEKS LATER“You can’t be serious.”Jessica sighed, placing the phone on her other ear. “Dad, I know this looks right, but Avery wants me to be there.”She heard her father’s disapproving silence stretched for a moment before he finally spoke up. “Jessica, this is Ethan’s family we are talking about here. They will use every opportunity to remind you that you lost custody of your daughter. Even though it’s only temporary.”“I know,” she admitted, rubbing her eyes. “But this isn’t about me. It’s about Avery.”“She’s an only child. She doesn’t understand what this is doing to you.”Jessica swallowed the lump in her throat. She understood what her father was talking about. Every moment spent around Ethan, his world, and his family took something away from her, leaving her exposed. But her little girl wanted her to be present. That was all that mattered.A soft knock at her apartment door made her come back to reality. “I have to go, Dad. I’ll call you soon.”She hung up and pulled op
“No, no, no...” Jessica’s voice trembled as she read through the words again, her fingers holding on tightly around the document as if she would squeeze enough and the ruling would change. Her vision began to blur with tears, her entire body going numb from the shock.“Jessica?” Ricky’s voice came but cautious this time around, the argument between them had been forgotten temporarily. She took a step closer, but she shut it down.“Sorry, but I need to be alone.” She whispered, her voice barely audible to him.“What? Jessica what’s going...”“I said I need to be alone, Ricky!” she snapped at him, her grief and frustration boiling over. Without waiting for him to leave, she grabbed a coat from the rack and stormed out of the house, slamming her door behind him. When he was ready he would leave and lock up.The cold night air hit her cheeks harshly as she walked aimlessly down the street. Her mind was a field of chaos. They had finally taken her. They hadn’t finally taken Avery. The cour
