Amelie’s POV
This.
Can not.
Be.
Happening.
Someone, please wake me up from this awful nightmare. I have been at the hospital for 3 hours now, and still no word on what was going on. It was driving me crazy. I felt nauseated. Just then, Tiffany ran into the waiting room.
“Ame! Oh my gosh! I heard, and I had to come and see you,” Tiffany said as she hugged me, “Is Zander ok?”
“I don’t know, Tiff. I honestly don’t know.” I burst into tears.
“Shhhh, he’s going to be ok. Your love will pull him through.” She wiped my tears away and hugged me for what felt like an eternity. It was exactly what I needed.
Man, I loved Tiff. She was the best friend anyone could ever have. For the past 5 years, she has been my rock, comfort, and umbrella to weather any storm. We always joked that we should just get married and forget about men. Then Tiff messed up our plans and found the most amazing boyfriend, Peter. You could tell their love for each other just by looking at them. Honestly, Peter was a god among men for the way he treated her and the way he loved her so deeply. He had the purest heart, and it showed in everything he did. I just hoped that someday, I would find that kind of love.
Tiff hugged me again, “I hate to leave you, but I’m already late for work. I told Darcy about your brother, and she covered your shift at the coffee shop for tomorrow morning.”
“What would I do without you, Tiff?”
“Probably lose your mind?” We both laughed at her comment. It was true; she held me together for more days than I’d like to admit.
“I love you, Tiff. I promise to text you when I find something out.” I watched as she walked down the hall and faded into the distance.
I spotted the doctor walking towards me.
“Ms. Cavanaugh?” he questioned.
“Yes,” I blurted out as I stood.
“I’m Dr. Carrera.” He extended his hand to shake mine. “Can you follow me to my office?”
“I’m sorry about the delay. We needed to run a battery of tests on your brother to determine what was happening. Were you aware he has a heart condition?” Dr. Carrera queried.
“No, a heart condition?” I gasped in shock.
“Yes, he has a small hole in his heart called a Ventricular septal defect. Normally, the smaller holes close independently in childhood or have no symptoms.”
“What does this mean?”
“Since it is not closing on its own, we need to do surgery,” he stated, “Don’t worry, most medical insurance coverages will cover this type of surgery. If you would just reach out to your parents….”
“We don’t have parents, and we don’t have insurance.” The tears welled up in my eyes.
“Oh.” Dr. Carrera spoke.
“If he doesn’t have the surgery?” I whispered.
“Well, I wouldn’t recommend it, but if he is kept from activities and looked after, you could postpone it for a while. He must have the surgery as soon as possible.”
Zander couldn’t be held down. He was a free-spirited 17-year-old boy. He was the star quarterback for his football team and on the swim team. How was I supposed to tell him he had to give up everything he loved?
“How much is the surgery?” I felt the panic start to overtake my breathing.
“Well, I’m sure we can apply for some assistance for you, but it would probably be about $100,000.”
My heart was in my throat. I stood up, and a wave of panic overtook me. How was I supposed to get that type of money? That was the last thought I had before everything went black.
“Ms. Cavanaugh? Ms. Cavanaugh?” I woke up to Dr. Carrera leaning over me.
“What happened?”
“You fainted, Ms. Cavanaugh.” He stated.
“I’m sorry,” I blushed.
“Understandable, news like this can be quite shocking. When’s the last time you drank or ate something?”
“Yesterday,” I said.
“You need to get some food and fluids in your system, " he chided. I will have one of the nurses walk you to the café in the lobby. After that, you can visit your brother. He is stabilized now and will be moved to a room soon.”
“Thank you, Dr. Carrera.”
Amelie’s POVI sat with Madison, and we talked for an hour. I asked if she was willing to let Dr. Yvonne see her in the hospital. She thought it would be an excellent idea. I was so relieved. I had already set up Dr. Yvonne to see me at the hospital, so I’m sure she could fit in Madison as a favor.Paul walked back into the room with a tea for Madison, but he had also brought some muffins, pastries, and a couple of bottles of orange and apple juice back as well.“I stopped by to see Nathan and Carrington before I went down,” Paul advised. “He demanded that I feed you as well, Amelie. I am not going to argue with Carrington.” Paul chuckled.“I don’t blame you. I don’t think you would win anyway,” I laughed.“That’s the honest truth, Amelie,” Paul said, taking a bite of a muffin.I looked in the bag and pulled out a bagel with cream cheese and started nibbling on it. I reached for an apple juice, as I didn’t want a repeat of the orange juice episode I had at home.We talked for half an
Amelie’s POVI know this is the right decision to stay with Nathan in the hospital. Dr. Fellows said she would only let me stay if I got checked out thoroughly. I conceded and went to her office. She had the lab run bloodwork to make sure my hCG levels were good. Which they were, in fact, Dr. Fellows said, they were a little elevated. Dr. Fellows treated my wrists and gave me cream for them.I promised her I would eat properly while staying at the hospital.“Amelie, it’s not just yourself you’re caring for, it’s the baby too,” she said, smiling.“I know, I promise I will take care of us,” I stated as I put my hand on my belly.“Good, now go and stay close to your husband,” Dr. Fellows advised. “I have a feeling he knows when you’re in the room.”“Thanks, doctor,” I said and left her office.I went straight back to Nathan’s room, which happened to be the same one Carrington stayed in, way back at the start of our story. I smiled, thinking of how my life had completely changed in a span
Amelie’s POVI was exhausted. I didn’t want to leave Nathan, but I had to admit it. To my surprise, Marcus was out front waiting for me. Dylan wasn’t there, though.“Marcus, you should be resting!” I exclaimed.“I wasn’t hurt, Mrs. Michaels,” Marcus responded. “I was just drugged.”“Still, you should at least have a couple of days off,” I replied. “How is Dylan?”“He’s at home resting,” Marcus stated. “He has eight stitches on his temple.”“Oh gosh, that’s horrible,” I declared.“Dylan was mad he wasn’t allowed to work today,” Marcus chuckled. “I think he’ll fully recover.”“Thank goodness,” I said, smiling.“So I have a surprise for you,” Marcus indicated and opened the door.Logan and Zander rushed out the door and hugged me.“Thank God you’re ok, Ame,” Zander gushed.“I was so scared I’d never see you again, Mum,” Logan expressed.“My boys, how I’ve missed you!” I cried.“Can we see Dad?” Logan asked.“Are you sure?” I said, holding Logan’s face in my hands. “He’s hooked up to a bu
Amelie’s POVCarrington and I headed for the café in the lobby. Once we had our drinks and food, we sat down.“Grandfather, in this whole tragedy. I need to advise you on a few things,” I announced.“What do you need to say?” Carrington asked.“Vivian is dead,” I stated. “So is Franklin Duval.”“What?” Carrington said, shocked.I revealed that Vivian and Franklin were Jonathan’s parents. I also explained that Vivian and Franklin orchestrated the whole kidnapping and how they brainwashed Jonathan and screwed him up all through his childhood. That Jonathan had stabbed his father for trying to sexually assault me, and he had shot Vivian to protect me.“Wow,” Carrington breathed out. “I didn’t even know she was pregnant a second time.”“She seems to be good at hiding things,” I declared. “This isn’t the biggest shocking news.”“How can something be more shocking than that?” Carrington chuckled.“This is huge in relation to you, Grandfather,” I expressed.“Amelie, tell me, you know you can
Amelie’s POV“What happened after you came into the building?” I asked while leaning my head against the car window. “I closed my eyes to brace for death.”“Well, you missed quite a bit,” Detective Anton stated. “After we told her to drop her gun, someone shot Vivian. Initially, I turned around and told off my officers, but they all said they hadn’t discharged their weapons. We turned around to spot Jonathan Adams with a gun in his hand. So, we ordered him to toss the gun away and lie down on the floor.”“Jonathan?” I said, shocked.“Yes, Jonathan,” Detective Anton confirmed. “Then he said, ‘Tell Amelie, thank you for showing me kindness when everyone else tried to use me. I know I didn’t deserve it from her after all the things I did to scare her.’ He sounded really sincere.”Jonathan had saved me. He killed his own mother to save me. I honestly think he was just as fucked up by Franklin as Madison was. Then add Vivian into the mix. The poor guy didn’t have a chance to be normal.“Wh
Amelie’s POVI knew he would come for me. I just knew it in my heart. I would go to the ends of the earth for Nathan, and I know he would do the same for me.“Nathaniel,” Vivian stated. “Stay out of this.”She waved her gun around.“Mother, there is no need to be like this,” Nathan replied. “Amelie is not her mother.”“It doesn’t mean that the daughter can’t atone for her mother’s sins,” Vivian replied.“She’s not responsible for what her mother did,” Nathan said calmly. “Mother, I love Amelie with all my heart. Please don’t hurt her.”“You’ve been brainwashed, Nathan,” Vivian revealed, her hand and her words shaky. “That’s the only reason you think you have feelings for her. Once she’s gone, then you’ll see.”“Mother, put the gun down,” Nathan said as he took a step closer to her.“BACK OFF, NATHAN!” She screamed and waved the gun.Nathan took a couple of steps back to defuse the situation. “Ok, Ok, Mother,” Nathan stated. “Let’s all stay calm. You really don’t want to hurt anyone, j
