Chapter 4 – The Ultimatum

Nathan’s POV

As I pushed the elevator button to head to the VIP ward, I still thought about the beautiful goddess in the café. Why didn’t I approach her right away? I blew that chance. I sigh and run my hand through my hair.

My grandfather’s room was the most oversized room on the private VIP floor. Corner room, of course. Just like his office at Michaels Investment Group. It would be my office one day, but it is now vacant. Carrington Michaels had a larger-than-life persona. Everything he did spoke of power and dominance. He garnered attention everywhere he went and demanded excellence from everyone around him. When my father passed away when I was 14 years old, my grandfather stepped in to be the father figure I needed. My mother, in her insurmountable grief, had stepped away from me after my father’s death. I had lost both parents the day my father died. I owed everything to this man. Even during my years away at boarding school, he was just a phone call or a plane ride away. He was my inspiration at university, getting my doctorate in Economics. He was my rock. When he was diagnosed with cancer 3 months ago, it set my axis off-kilter. He had told me not to worry. He had the best doctors at the best hospital, and “No damn cancer” would take him out.

I opened the door to his room and laughed at the sight before me. My grandfather was in his flirting stance. I knew it well. His sparkling grey eyes, cocked brow, and grinning smirk were undeniable. I had seen it many times being used on women all over the place. Hell, I think it's where I learned it from. The Michaels charm, people called it. It oozed pure sexuality and got me anything and anyone I wanted.

“Ahem,” I coughed out.

The young twenty-something nurse turned around. “Oh, it looks like you have company, Mr. Michaels.” She smiled.

“Bethany, didn’t I tell you to call me Carrington?” my grandfather mused.

She giggled and touched my grandfather’s arm, then left the room.

“Still at it, I see,” I laughed at my grandfather.

“I’m not dead yet,” he winked.

“You’d probably still be doing it in heaven if you were.” I joked.

He laughed and smiled his debonair smile.

“Ahhhhhh, my coffee. Good boy.”  I handed him his coffee and sat in the chair beside the hospital bed.

“So, Grandfather, what did you so desperately need to talk to me about today that you had Samuel reschedule all my afternoon appointments?”

“Well, Nathaniel, I’ve decided I should maybe retire as CEO at Michaels Investment Group.” I cringed at my full name; grandfather was the only one who dared call me by it.

What? I never thought I would see the day. I thought they would carry him out of the office straight to the hearse when he was 99.

“Why now, Grandfather? Is everything ok?”  I questioned.

“Nothing to worry about, Nathaniel. Things are improving with the cancer, but I’ve time to think laying here in this damn hospital bed.” He sighed. I know he missed working; it was his life. Long hours and endless meetings were his lifeline.

“You have proven yourself as interim CEO in my absence; I want you to take over as CEO, but…”

I cut him off, “Grandfather, nothing good ever comes after a but.”

“The board of directors is leery of your playboy ways,” he stated. In fact, they are pushing for Alfred to take over.”

Fuck no! Alfred, my cousin, was a bigger playboy than me. He couldn’t keep it in his pants for more than a couple of hours. He only hid his ways behind the premise of being a family man with a wife and the standard two kids. He couldn’t lead worth shit, either! There was no fucking way I was letting him run our grandfather’s company into the ground.

“What must I do, Grandfather, to gain the board's favor?”  I asked.

“The answer is simple, my boy. You have until December 31st to get married.”

“You must be joking.” I look at my grandfather incredulously.

“I’m dead serious, Nathaniel,” he answers, “You secure a marriage by New Year’s Eve, or Alfred is CEO.”

My mind was reeling. How the hell was I supposed to find someone to get married to by December 31st? That’s only 6 weeks away. All the women I had ever been with were disposable. Golddiggers or no one of consequence. This marriage had to look genuine. Where was I supposed to find a girl that looked worthy to marry?

My thoughts were interrupted by nurse Bethany coming into the room. “Carrington, it's time for your treatment.” My grandfather stood up and walked to the wheelchair.

My grandfather turned to me, “You better get a move on it; the clock is ticking, Nathaniel.”  He then sat in the wheelchair, and Bethany wheeled him across the room and out the door.

I sat there for 10 minutes, my mind going 100 miles per hour, tick, tick, tick, Nathan. I leaped to my feet and headed to the door. I dialed my phone as I marched down the hall.

Kimmy’s POV“Are you sure?” Dante asked.“I definitely am,” I said, nodding. “However…”“However, what?” Dante sighed.“I don’t want to tell anyone yet,” I stated. “This trip is about Nathan and Amelie. I don’t want to take away from that. In fact, I think we shouldn’t say anything until after Christmas.”“Done,” Dante responded as he started nibbling on my neck.“Why are you so agreeable today?” I laughed.“Because I get the girl of my dreams by being agreeable,” he smirked.“Ah, point taken,” I giggled. “Oh, my, Dante.” I hummed as his mouth teased my collarbone.“You like that, legs?” Dante asked.“Yes,” I breathed.Dante’s fingers expertly undid the zipper on the back of my dress, pulled the spaghetti straps down, and slid my dress down to pool on the floor.“Fuck, Kimmy,” Dante groaned. “No bra or panties?”“I was hoping to seduce you tonight,” I admitted. “I longed to feel your touch.”“Well, I shouldn’t disappoint then, should I?” Dante murmured against my skin.“Dante,” I sigh

Five and a half years laterDante’s POVKimmy still hasn’t given in to me. It’s been five and a half years, but I’m not giving up. I know we are meant to be together. I want to be a couple. I want the happy family with two kids and a white picket fence.I think I’m wearing her down, though. I’m going to try and make a move tonight. We’re in Las Vegas right now and just met Nathan’s new girlfriend, Amelie. She’s smoking hot. Like, I mean, inferno hot, but still, she doesn’t compare to Kimmy in my eyes. I will, however, flirt with her to get under Nathan’s skin. He’s so possessive that it totally freaks him out when I do it.It’s hard to believe a random charity event brought me this group of friends who are currently singing their hearts out at karaoke. It also brought me the love of my life in Kimmy, and my best friend, Dante. Everyone is having an amazing time at karaoke. Half an hour ago, Nathan carried Amelie out of the room on his shoulder after she sang, I Touch Myself by the Di

Kimmy’s POV“He’s not, he’s wearing a towel,” I smirked.Dante stood up. “Kimmy, did he… touch you?”“Why is it any concern of yours?” I asked.“Kimmy, tell me. Did he touch you?” Dante demanded.“No, he didn’t,” I explained. “He stayed to look after me because I got hammered last night. Are you happy?”“Extremely,” he said, crouching down in front of me. “Kimmy, I wish I can take back saying yes to the studio, but I can’t. I just don’t want it to ruin us. I don’t want to lose you.”“Dante, you already have,” I pointed out.“What?” Dante questioned, a scared look in his eyes.“Even if I stay with you, I can’t see you, or I’ll be the other woman. Finley has a huge following. Her fans are ruthless. Remember when she broke up with Troy Livingstone? Her fans basically threatened and tormented his new girlfriend online. They would ruin me. I can’t live like that. I think we should just be friends.”Dante stood up and sat next to me. “I ruined it, didn’t I?” he said, leaning on my shoulder.

Dante’s POVI’ve left over twenty-five messages and twice as many text messages for Kimmy. She won’t answer me or respond to my texts. I’m sick to my stomach and pissed off at the same time. I’m in my room drinking heavily when I hear a knock at the door.I opened the door… fuck. It’s Finley. She walks right in without asking.“Finley,” I sighed. “What are you doing here?”“Can’t I spend some time with my fiancée?” she said, smiling.“I’m not your real fiancée,” I grumbled.Finley stepped right up on me and dragged her hand down my chest. “You know… I could be your REAL fiancée if you’re willing,” she purred.I threw her hand down and stepped back.“No, Finley,” I yelled. “I have a girlfriend that I love.”“Ugh,” she said, walking to the couch and plunking herself down. “What does this Kimberley bitch have that I don’t. I’m sure she doesn’t have the influence or money I have.”“That’s the thing, none of those things are important,” I declared. “A sparkling personality and a warm heart

Dante’s POVI didn’t want to fucking do it. I didn’t want to lie to the public, myself, and most importantly, Kimmy.I fucking hate Finley Braven. She is the most annoying, self-absorbed diva I’ve ever met in my life. Filming with her for eight months was literally the most painful time of my life. Her incessant whining and complaining haunt my nightmares. When we had our meeting with promotions last night, the director and the studio head honchos thought that portraying the couple would make the movie skyrocket. Finley was the one who had the brilliant idea for us to get engaged.“Absolutely, not,” I declared. “I have a girlfriend, the love of my life.”“Dante, don’t be unreasonable,” Mr. Duncan had said. “Just tell her what is happening. We won’t announce it until you have a chance to explain it to her.”I sighed, “How long do we have to keep up this ridiculous façade?” I asked.“Six months, tops,” he said.“Ok, but no press releases until I say so,” I stated.“You’ll have to move i

Three months laterKimmy’s POV“Hurry up, Kimmy,” Morgan shouted from the kitchen. “You’re never going to make it there on time.”“I’m going as fast as I can,” I yelled back.Morgan has been a godsend as a roommate. She’s my best friend, my confidant, and sometimes she acts like my mom, even though I’m two months older than her.I scrambled out of my bedroom. “Thanks for waking me up again,” I said as I dashed around the apartment stuffing things into my bag. “I can’t believe my alarm clock didn’t go off.”“It happens to the best of us,” Morgan said, smiling.“You know I love you, girl,” I grinned.“I know,” Morgan replied. “We’d make a good couple if we didn’t like dick so much.”I burst out laughing. Morgan always knew exactly what to say.“Paul, Nathan, and I will be there tonight,” Morgan advised. “Nathan got us front row seats.”“Awesome!” I said, excitedly. “Please cheer even if I suck.”“You’re going to be amazing,” Morgan stated. “Remember, I get to hear it every day when you’
