The night guard looked up.

“I need air,” I said. “Just the lobby.”

He checked his screen. “You’re not cleared.”

“Five minutes. You can watch me the whole time.”

He hesitated, then nodded. The elevator doors opened. I stepped in. When they opened on the lobby I walked straight toward the side exit. Behind me a sharp electronic tone cut through the quiet. Red lights flashed along the ceiling. The guard’s radio crackled.

“Unauthorized exit. Main floor. Subject is moving.”

I pushed the door open and kept walking. The night air hit my face. I did not look back.

The diner near the old loading docks was half empty. Fluorescent lights hummed. Sticky tables. A single waitress wiped the counter in slow circles. I scanned every booth. The man I had called was not there.

A folder sat alone on a corner table.

I sat down and pulled it toward me. Copies of internal memos. Dates that matched the months before the collapse. Language about restructuring, silent partners, and necessary transitions. One memo mentioned coordination with an external firm. The name of that firm was blacked out, but the tone was clear. Someone inside had helped push the company under.

I turned the pages fast. My hands left damp marks on the edges. Another memo talked about timing. Another listed names of board members who had been “brought into alignment.” My father’s name appeared once, crossed out in a later copy.

The door opened. Michael Kane walked in like he belonged there. Two men waited outside on the sidewalk. He came straight to my table and sat across from me.

“You left the building,” he said.

“I needed answers.”

“You took a phone that was not yours and walked into a public place while carrying my child.”

“Our contract does not cover this folder.”

He looked at the papers. “Give it to me.”

“No.”

“Jennifer.”

“These memos say the collapse was helped from the inside. Someone in my father’s company worked with outsiders.”

Kane reached across and took the folder. He did it without raising his voice. I held on for a second and then let go because his grip was stronger.

“You followed me,” I said.

“Security alerts lit up the moment you stepped outside. Of course I followed you.”

“The man who left this was supposed to meet me.”

“He is gone. He will not contact you again.”

“Did you pay him to leave?”

“I did not need to.”

I leaned forward. “Those papers show someone betrayed my father.”

Kane closed the folder and rested his hand on top of it. “The real traitor is still inside your father’s old company. And he is still watching.”

I stared at him. The waitress stayed behind the counter. The two men outside did not move. The folder sat under Kane’s hand like it had never been mine.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It means the person who helped engineer the collapse never left. He has been tracking every move connected to the old firm. Including you.”

“You knew this and still let me come here?”

“I knew you would come whether I allowed it or not. Now you have seen the papers. Now you understand the risk.”

“Give them back.”

“No.”

“Those are about my family.”

“They are about a threat that reaches into the present. I will handle it.”

I sat back. The vinyl seat stuck to my jacket. “You can’t just take everything.”

“I can. And I will. Until the pregnancy is safe and the people watching you are no longer a problem.”

“Including the ones you sent after my brother?”

“Different matter.”

“It is the same matter to me.”

Kane’s voice stayed even. “Your brother is under observation for his protection and yours. The man who left these memos is something else. He has stayed quiet for years. Tonight he resurfaced because you called him.”

“So this is my fault?”

“This is the consequence of digging without preparation.”

I pointed at the folder. “Those pages say the collapse was planned. Someone inside helped you.”

“Someone inside helped the process. I did not invent the weakness. I used it.”

“You used my father’s trust.”

“I used available information. The rest was already in motion.”

I shook my head. “You always have a clean version of the story.”

“I have the version that kept my company standing. Your father’s did not.”

“Because someone on his side opened the door for you.”

“Yes.”

“And that someone is still there.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the closed folder. “Name him.”

“Not yet.”

“Why not?”

“Because the moment you know the name you will do something reckless. I need you focused on the pregnancy, not on revenge.”

“You don’t get to decide what I focus on.”

“I do while you live under my roof and carry my child.”

The waitress finally walked over. “You two need menus?”

Kane answered without looking at her. “No. We are leaving.”

She shrugged and went back to the counter.

I stayed in the seat. “If the traitor is still watching, then David is in more danger than you admitted.”

“David is covered.”

“You said the same thing before those men offered him cash.”

Kane’s jaw tightened once. “That incident is under review.”

“Under review. That is all you have?”

“That is all you need for tonight.”

I stood up. My legs felt unsteady. “You took the only proof I had.”

“I took material that could get you killed if it stayed in your hands.”

“Or material that could finally tell me the truth.”

Kane held the folder at his side. “The car is outside. You are returning to the penthouse. No more borrowed phones. No more night exits.”

“And if I refuse?”

“You already know the answer.”

I looked at the empty table where the folder had been. The memos were gone. The man who left them was gone. Kane waited like the conversation was finished.

“The traitor,” I said. “Does he know about the pregnancy?”

Kane’s eyes met mine. “Assume he does. Assume he has known since the first medical update left the clinic. Assume every step you take from this moment is already being measured.”

I felt the air leave my chest.

He turned toward the door. The two men outside straightened. I followed because there was nowhere else to go. The diner door closed behind us and the night air hit my face again. The folder stayed in Kane’s hand. The warning stayed in my head.

The real traitor was still inside. He was still watching. And now he knew exactly where to look.

I stood on the chair and covered the tiny red light with a strip of black tape I had pulled from the desk drawer. The blinking stopped. I stepped down and checked every corner of the guest suite again. Windows first. Then the vents. The smoke detector that was not a smoke detector. The desk lamp. The underside of the bed frame. No other lights. No other lenses I could see. I sat at the desk, opened a notebook, and started writing.Every restriction. No unmonitored calls. No leaving the floor without clearance. Medical checks twice a day. Meals logged. David’s contact limited and listened to. The camera I had just covered. I wrote the list twice to make sure nothing was missing. My hand cramped. I kept going anyway. Page after page of rules that were never mine to choose. I added the times the nurses came. The exact wording Kane had used when he told me the observation on David would continue. The way the security men never answered when I asked how long the watch would last.A knock c

The phone rang while I was still staring at the photo of the handshake.David’s name lit up the screen. I answered on the second ring.“Jennifer?” His voice was tight.“What’s wrong?”“Two guys just stopped me outside work. They offered cash. A lot of it. They wanted to know where you are.”My grip on the phone tightened. “What did you tell them?”“Nothing. I said I didn’t know and walked away. They followed me for half a block. I ducked into the subway and called you.”“Are you safe right now?”“I’m on a train. I think I lost them. Who the hell are they?”“I don’t know yet. Stay on the train. Go somewhere public. Don’t go home.”“Jennifer, what is going on?”“I’ll explain later. Just keep moving. Call me when you’re somewhere bright.”“You’re not telling me everything.”“I can’t right now. Please just do what I said.”I hung up and left the guest suite. Kane was in the main room reviewing something on a tablet. He looked up when I walked in.“Your security team is watching my brothe

The car stopped under a private entrance I had never seen before.Patricia opened the door. “This is the residence. Medical staff are already upstairs.”I stepped out. The lobby was quiet and cold. Two security men rode the elevator with us. When the doors opened on the top floor the space was all glass and open rooms and furniture that looked like it had never been touched.Kane stood near the windows. He turned when we entered.“The suite is ready,” he said. “Your medical team has the east wing. Meals will be prepared. Clothing has been provided.”I set my bag on the floor. “I don’t want the clothes.”“They are available if you change your mind.”“I won’t. I want a lawyer. My own. Not the one from before.”Kane nodded once. “I will arrange it. He will be here this afternoon.”“I want him now.”“This afternoon is the earliest.”Patricia left without a word. The security men took positions near the elevator. I walked through the main room and refused every open door that led to bedroo

The car stopped in front of a glass tower I had seen on the news more times than I wanted to count.I sat still in the back seat until the driver opened the door. Patricia waited on the sidewalk with two men in dark suits.“This way,” she said.I followed her through the lobby. My shoes sounded too loud on the marble. The elevator ride was silent. Patricia kept her eyes forward. When the doors opened on a high floor she led me into a wide room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a long table in the center.“Wait here,” she said, and left.I stood near the table. My hands were cold. I kept looking at the door.It opened again. Michael Kane walked in.I knew his face before he spoke. The same face from every business channel, every article about the takeover that had erased my father’s company. Recognition hit me like a punch. His steps slowed for half a second. He saw it too.“Jennifer Cole,” he said. His voice was even.My own voice came out shaky. “You’re the man who ruined my father’s

Two weeks after the injection I sat on the edge of a hospital bed that was too soft and stared at the positive result in the nurse’s hand.“It’s confirmed,” she said. “You’re pregnant.”I nodded once. My fingers curled into the sheet. Relief hit first, sharp and quick. Then the other feeling followed, heavier, and settled in my chest.“When do I get the first payment?” I asked.“Today. The transfer is already processing. You’ll see it by this afternoon.”“And the housing?”“A private suite is ready. We’ll move you this afternoon. Everything is covered.”I looked at the floor. “Can I call my brother?”“Of course. Just keep the details limited. That’s part of the agreement.”They gave me a phone. I stepped into the small bathroom and dialed David.“Hey,” I said when he answered.“You okay? You didn’t come home.”“I found temporary work. It includes housing. I’ll be gone for a while.”“What kind of work?”“The kind that pays well and needs me on site. Don’t worry. The rent is handled. Th
