MY DESPAIR

(Damien's POV)

The fundraiser had been exactly what Eleanor wanted. A perfect display of power and sympathy. We stood together on the stage while cameras flashed. I smiled when I was supposed to smile. I shook hands when I was supposed to shake hands. I told everyone how proud I was of my grandmother's dedication to helping trauma victims.

Every word tasted like poison in my mouth.

The event raised over five million dollars for mental health services. Eleanor gave a moving speech about the importance of supporting survivors. She even mentioned Claire by name, calling her brave and resilient.

The crowd gave her a standing ovation.

I wanted to vomit.

After the event, we rode back to the mansion in silence. Eleanor looked satisfied.

"You did well tonight," she said as the car pulled up to the house. "Much better than I expected after your little tantrum yesterday."

"Thank you," I said flatly.

"The press loved us. Did you see the photographers? They couldn't get enough pictures

THE FIRST STRIKE(Serena's POV)The morning after the charity event, I woke up feeling different. The silver dress was hanging in my closet, a reminder that last night had been real. I had walked among the most powerful people in the world. I had shaken hands with senators and business moguls. I had seen the fear in their eyes when they looked at Lysander. And now it was time to put that power to use.My phone rang while I was making breakfast for Isabella. It was Lysander."Good morning," his voice was calm but serious. "We need to talk. Can you come to my office?""When?""Now. Elena can watch Isabella, yes?""Yes, but what's this about?""We're moving forward. Today. I'll explain when you get here."He hung up before I could ask more questions.Elena agreed to watch Isabella without hesitation. "Go," she said. "Do what you need to do."Thirty minutes later, I was sitting in Lysander's office. He looked like he hadn't slept. There were papers spread across his desk and his laptop wa

THE WORLD OF POWER(Serena's POV)The dress Lysander had sent to my apartment was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Silver silk that shimmered like moonlight. Pearls sewn into intricate patterns across the bodice. A long train that pooled on the floor like liquid mercury."This must have cost a fortune," Elena said as she helped me zip it up."I don't even want to know how much," I replied, looking at myself in the mirror. I barely recognized the woman staring back at me. She looked powerful. Elegant. Nothing like the broken woman who had fled New York almost a year ago."You look like a queen," Elena said softly."I feel like an imposter.""That's because you're not used to being treated the way you deserve. Get used to it, Serena. This is your life now."Isabella was already asleep. I kissed her forehead before I left, promising Elena I would be home before midnight.Lysander was waiting outside in a sleek black car. When I stepped out of the building, his eyes widened."You

THE PRICE OF DEFIANCE(Damien's POV)The Blackwood mansion felt like a gilded cage. The air was thick with Eleanor's satisfaction. Every newspaper and news channel praised our family's compassion in paying for Claire's medical care. They called us a pillar of strength. Each word was a lie that made me feel sick to my stomach.Eleanor was already planning her political campaign. She used the wave of public sympathy to present herself as a benevolent leader."With this goodwill, the city council seat is guaranteed," she said at dinner that evening, sipping her wine. "And after that, the mayor's office. No one can oppose us now."Victoria nodded eagerly. "It's perfect, Eleanor. You've turned a tragedy into a triumph. The polls are already showing a twenty point lead.""Twenty three points," Eleanor corrected. "I had them run the numbers this afternoon. The sympathy vote is exactly what we needed.""What about the Hendersons?" Victoria asked. "Are they still making noise?""They've been q

A MEETING IN THE SHADOWS(Serena's POV)Two days after our conversation in the courtyard, Lysander picked me up in a black car with windows so dark I couldn't see outside. The drive was long and quiet. We left the city behind, the buildings giving way to trees and open fields. The car eventually turned onto a narrow road that wound deep into a forest. My hands were clasped tightly in my lap. I was nervous about meeting these people Lysander called The Architects."Are you okay?" Lysander asked, noticing my tension."I don't know what I'm walking into," I admitted. "These people, whoever they are, they sound dangerous.""They're powerful," Lysander corrected. "There's a difference. Dangerous people hurt without purpose. Powerful people act with precision and intent.""And which one are you?" I asked, turning to look at him.He smiled slightly. "I'd like to think I'm powerful. But others might disagree."The car finally stopped before a large, windowless building made of gray concrete.

A NEW CIRCLE(Serena's POV)After I agreed to work with Helena Thorne, my life found a new pattern. It was a strange pattern, but it had a clear purpose. The first fear I felt when I met Helena was gone. Now, that fear had turned into a strong, hard determination. I had looked at the face of real power and decided to join it. I did this for my daughter, Isabella. And I did it for myself. My days were spent carefully balancing two different lives. In the mornings, I focused on Isabella and my own consulting business. I worked hard for my clients, like the local bakery owner and the family lawyer. I put all my energy into helping their small businesses grow. I liked this work. It was simple and it made me happy to see their dreams succeed. This work was like an anchor for me. It kept me connected to a normal world, a world with normal problems and clear results. In the afternoons, I usually met with Lysander. Our meetings were never for fun. They were always serious and focused. He was
