At that exact moment, the office door burst open with a loud BANG that made both of them jump, shattering the tense, intimate silence.

Sophia gasped and jumped back from Ethan like she had been burned, her heart in her throat.

"Mr. Blackwood! I'm so sorry, I'm so so sorry!" Mrs. Jenkins from the daycare downstairs stood panting at the door, her face red as a tomato, holding a crying, wiggling Lily who had snot and tears all over her little face, her pink backpack dragging on the floor. The old woman looked like she had run a marathon up fifty floors. "She slipped away from me! I turned for one second to sign the register and she said she knew her mommy was here and she just ran into the elevator before I could stop her! These modern elevators are too fast! I'm so sorry, Mr. Blackwood! I'll take her out right now!"

Lily's eyes, full of big fat tears that made her blue eyes even bigger, found Sophia first, then landed on Ethan.

And Ethan's entire body went rigid. Like someone had shot him straight through his heart with a bullet.

He stared at the little girl in the cream sweater with the little bunny on it, with blonde curls bouncing everywhere, a tiny button nose red from crying, and the exact same piercing ice-blue eyes as his own. Not similar. EXACT. The same shape, the same stormy blue color, the same long eyelashes, the same little crease between her eyebrows when she was upset that he saw in the mirror every morning when he shaved.

His brain, the billionaire brain that could calculate million-dollar deals in seconds, stopped working completely.

The silence in the office was deafening. You could hear a pin drop on the thick carpet. You could hear Sophia's heart hammering like a drum.

Mrs. Jenkins felt the strange tension and started backing away slowly towards the door, sensing she had interrupted something huge. "I... I will just... I will be downstairs..."

"Leave her," Ethan commanded, his voice hoarse, not loud but with such authority that Mrs. Jenkins froze and then scurried out, closing the door softly behind her. CLICK.

Now it was just the three of them.

Slowly, as if in a dream, as if his legs were not his own, Ethan crouched down to Lily's level, his cold, billionaire CEO mask shattering completely into a thousand pieces on his expensive floor. His large, expensive hand with the $50,000 watch trembled slightly as he reached out but didn't touch her.

"What's your name, little one?" he whispered, his voice broken, completely unlike the cruel, cold man from a second ago. His voice was shaking. Ethan Blackwood never shook.

Lily sniffled loudly, wiping her nose with her sleeve the way Sophia always told her not to, and stared at the giant handsome man in the scary suit. She wasn't scared though. She felt safe somehow.

"Lily," she whispered in her tiny voice. "Lily Miller. Are you the prince? Mommy said prince lives here. You look like prince but you are sad."

Ethan closed his eyes for a second, as if in physical pain, as if someone had stabbed him. Lily Miller. Miller. Sophia Miller.

When he opened them, they were filled with a storm of emotions so powerful it made Sophia take a step back in fear - shock, disbelief, raw pain, guilt, and a fierce, primal, possessive rage that was terrifying and beautiful at the same time.

He stood up slowly, very slowly, his 6'3 frame unfolding like a predator rising. He looked at Lily for one more long second, memorizing every inch of her face, then he looked up at Sophia.

And in that moment, recognition hit him like a freight train going 200 miles per hour. Like lightning struck him.

The girl from the dorm room. The girl with the laugh like sunshine who made his dark world bright. Sophia. His Sophia. The only woman he ever loved, the woman whose virginity he took so tenderly under fairy lights, the woman he cried for every night for a year after he was forced to leave. The woman his mother told him was a gold-digger who would ruin him.

His Sophia was standing in his office in a cheap blazer, looking terrified, looking like she had been through hell. And she had his child.

His child. His daughter. Four years old. Blonde curls. Blue eyes. Which meant... she got pregnant right after he left. That night. That rainy night.

His eyes turned dark, dangerous, possessive, his jaw clenching so tight a muscle ticked violently, as they locked onto Sophia with an intensity that made her legs give way and she had to hold the chair.

"You," he said, standing up fully and taking a step toward her, then another, backing her against the cold glass window. His voice was low and lethal, a whisper that was more terrifying than a shout. He trapped her with his arms on either side of her head. "You kept my child from me? My daughter? For FOUR YEARS? You let me believe... You let me..."

"I... I..." Sophia couldn't breathe. He was so close, his cologne overwhelming her, his blue eyes burning into hers. Lily was watching them with big confused eyes.

"Mommy? Why is prince angry?" Lily asked in a small voice, tugging Sophia's skirt.

Ethan's gaze snapped down to Lily, and instantly his face softened, the rage melting into something heartbreakingly tender. He crouched down again and this time, gently, so gently, wiped Lily's tears with his thumb.

"I'm not angry at you, princess," he whispered to Lily, his voice full of tears he would never shed. "Never at you. You are... you are so beautiful. Just like your Mommy."

He looked up at Sophia, and tears were actually shining in his cruel blue eyes now. "How could you? Sophia, how could you keep her from me? I have a daughter. I HAVE A DAUGHTER and no one told me."

Sophia finally found her voice, tears streaming down her own face now. "You left me! You blocked me! You disappeared! I tried to find you! I went to your dorm! They said you were an heir, you went back to your real life! What was I supposed to do?"

Ethan stood up, his hand running through his perfect hair, messing it up, showing the first crack in his perfect armor in five years. He laughed, but it was a broken, painful laugh.

"My real life? My real life was you! My mother... my mother told me if I didn't leave you, she would destroy you! She said you were after my money! She took my phone! She..."

He stopped, looking at Lily again, at Sophia, at the little family he never knew he had, standing in his cold, empty office that had never felt less like home and more like a prison.

"What's her birthday?" he asked suddenly, his voice rough.

"March... March 15th. She just turned four last month," Sophia whispered.

Ethan did the math in his head instantly. March 15th. Four years old. Five years ago...

He closed his eyes. "Our night. The night before I left. That was..."

Sophia nodded, crying silently.

Ethan opened his eyes, and they were no longer cold. They were blazing with a fierce, possessive love and determination that made Sophia shiver.

"You're not leaving this building," he said, his voice low, final, like a king giving a decree that could not be disobeyed. "Neither of you. Ever again. You're mine. Both of you are mine now."

Elena's hand was shaking so badly she almost knocked over the coffee on Alexander Sterling's mahogany desk. The white envelope shouldn't be there. It was too clean. Too innocent-looking. But Elena knew that handwriting on the front - that shaky cursive that wrote "FOR ALEXANDER STERLING - PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL."It was Mrs. Carter.Mrs. Carter, the retired nurse from St. Mary's Private Hospital. The only person on earth who knew what really happened five years ago after the Sterling Foundation Gala. The only person who helped Elena disappear that night when she realized she was pregnant and Alexander was already engaged to Victoria Beaumont."Your 9 AM is here," her assistant, Mia, whispered from the doorway, holding the envelope like it was a bomb. "Mrs. Carter left this at reception. She said you must give it to Mr. Sterling today. She said... she said the boy deserves to know his father before it's too late."Elena's blo

Happiness in the penthouse lasted exactly 47 minutes.Sophia knew because she checked the clock on the gold wall. 7:03 AM - Ethan was kissing her. 7:50 AM - Lily was eating pancakes shaped like stars while Ethan showed her how billionaires make coffee with a machine that looked like a spaceship. And at 7:50 AM, the private elevator dinged.Ethan didn't look up. Only three people had the code to his private elevator. His assistant, his best friend, and his mother. The doors opened.Margaret Blackwood walked in like she owned the 51 floors, because technically she did own 30% of them. Perfect hair, perfect pearls, perfect cold face. She was 60 but looked 45, the kind of rich woman who never sweats. Her eyes scanned the kitchen. Lily in Ethan's oversized t-shirt, syrup on her face. Sophia in her cheap nightgown, hair messy from kissing. Ethan in pajama pants, barefoot, laughing.Margaret's perfect face cracked.

Morning in the penthouse did not feel like morning in Queens. In Queens, morning was alarm at 5 AM, cold water, Lily crying for cereal, running for the bus.In the castle 51 floors up, morning was sunlight pouring through glass walls like gold, no alarm, the smell of pancakes, and Lily still asleep on Ethan's chest, drooling.Sophia woke up slowly, confused. Her head was on something hard, warm, moving up and down. Boom-boom. Heartbeat. Not hers. She opened her eyes.Ethan Blackwood's bare chest. She was sleeping on Ethan Blackwood's chest. On the other side of him, Lily was still asleep, tiny hand fisted in his shirt.Oh my God.Sophia sat up so fast she almost fell off the castle bed.Ethan's eyes opened instantly. Blue, alert, even half-asleep he looked like a CEO who never truly sleeps."Morning," he said, his voice rough from sleep, sexy and low, making Sophia's stomach do things it h

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Heir    Chapter 7: The Thunderstorm

Sophia woke up to thunder. Not the sound. The shaking.Lily was trembling in her arms, her little face buried in Sophia's chest, her blonde curls damp with sweat, her whole body shaking like a leaf."Mommy, boom boom scare Lily," she whimpered, her voice tiny, broken. The penthouse windows were rattling. New York was having one of those violent late summer storms, rain lashing the glass 51 floors up, lightning turning the giant living room white every few seconds. The palace in the sky was suddenly scary.Sophia held her tighter, humming the lullaby she always sang in their little studio when thunder came - the one about the brave little mouse who wasn't scared of anything. In the studio, the thunder was muffled by thin walls and noisy neighbors. Here, in glass and marble, it was everywhere."It's okay, baby, it's okay, Mommy here, brave mouse here—" she whispered, rocking her.But Lily wasn't calming. She had alway

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Heir    Chapter 6 : The First Night In The Castle

The castle had too many rooms.Lily counted them. Or tried to. She got to seventeen before she got lost and ended up back in the giant kitchen where her mother was sitting on a stool that was too tall, her cheap waitress uniform looking wrong against the marble island that cost more than four years of her rent.Sophia hadn't spoken since she said "Yes, we can stay." She was holding a glass of water Ethan had given her with hands that wouldn't stop shaking. The water was from a bottle that probably cost $20. Everything in this penthouse was too expensive, too clean, too perfect for a girl like her who still had $42.18 in her bank account.Ethan was in his walk-in closet, on the phone with his lawyers, his voice low but furious, saying words like "revoke," "freeze," and "restraining order." Even when he was destroying his mother for them, he sounded like a king giving orders."Ethan Blackwood is not a man you say no to, Sophia," she remembered his m

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Heir    Chapter 5 : Confronting The Devil

The private elevator didn't go down. It went up. Sophia clutched Lily tighter as the elevator rose one more floor, to the 51st floor - a floor that didn't even exist on the public buttons, a floor that only Ethan's fingerprint could access. The doors opened directly into a home. No, not a home. A palace in the sky. Floor-to-ceiling windows everywhere, marble floors so clean Lily could see her reflection, a giant kitchen with an island bigger than Sophia's entire studio apartment, toys that had never been touched still in boxes in the corner, as if someone had bought them hoping a child would one day come. "This... this is your house?" Sophia whispered, her voice echoing in the huge, empty, cold space. It was beautiful, but it was lonely. Like its owner had been lonely for five years. "Our house," Ethan corrected, setting Lily down gently. Lily immediately ran to the windows, her tiny hands pressed
