Mag-log inEmily POV
I woke up feeling drained and heavy. Sleep had been almost impossible last night. I kept replaying everything — Rose’s threats, Cade’s ridiculous proposal, and the terrifying realization that my mother and I could soon be homeless. When Mom had been hospitalized and needed emergency surgery, Rose had offered to pay the huge bill without hesitation. She had even said I could repay her whenever I could afford it. But that kindness had vanished overnight. I knew how ruthless Rose could be when collecting debts. I had watched her ruin other people’s lives over money. I wouldn’t be any different. I pulled the covers over my head, wishing I could hide from reality. The bedroom door flew open. “Emily, you need to see this right now!” Mom rushed in, waving a piece of paper. I took it with trembling hands.Eviction Notice. My heart sank. “How is this possible? We’ve always paid on time.” “That’s what I want to know!” Mom cried. “We’re not behind on rent. What kind of nonsense is this?” “I’ll handle it,” I said quickly, forcing myself out of bed. “Stay here, Mom. I’ll go speak to the landlady myself.” I changed into jeans and an orange crop top, barely bothering to brush my hair, and left the house with my mind spinning. How much worse can this get? The confrontation with the landlady was even uglier than I feared. After several heated exchanges, she let something slip — “Madam Rose made me promise…” The truth hit me like a slap. Rose had bought our house just to force my hand. This wasn’t business anymore. This was personal destruction. I left the landlady’s house feeling sick to my stomach. On the way home, I stopped at an ATM and withdrew every cent I had saved. It still wasn’t enough to fully repay Rose, but maybe it would buy us a little time. How did my life collapse so fast? One argument with a billionaire and suddenly my mother and I are about to be thrown onto the street? When I finally got home, I tried to paste on a smile. “Mom, I’m back!” “Come in, sweetheart. You have a guest!” I walked into the living room and froze. Cade Callaghan was sitting on our old couch, looking completely out of place yet perfectly at ease, sipping tea my mother had served him. “Here’s your visitor, dear,” Mom said warmly. “He said he’s a very good friend of yours.” A good friend? If only she knew. “Mr. Callaghan,” I said coldly. “What are you doing here?” “We still need to finish our conversation from yesterday.” “I already gave you my answer.” “And I’m hoping you’ve reconsidered.” Mom excused herself, leaving us alone. I immediately dragged Cade outside so she wouldn’t overhear. The moment we were alone, I turned on him. “Why the hell are you here?” “To see if you’ve changed your mind.” “Even now that you’re getting evicted?” he asked softly. “That’s none of your business.” “I can make it my business, Emily.” His voice was smooth, tempting. “Accept my deal and all your problems disappear. Money. A safe home for your mother. Security. Whatever you need — it’s yours.” I wanted to scream. Part of me hated him for offering this. Another part — a much more desperate part — was actually considering it. My mother’s health was fragile. She couldn’t handle the stress of moving, let alone being homeless. Rose would destroy us if I didn’t pay her back. And I had no other way out.But I’d have to lie. Live with this arrogant man. Pretend to be in love with him in front of his family. Sleep under the same roof as him. What if he tries to cross boundaries? What if I lose myself in the process? Cade stepped closer, watching me intently. “Why me?” I asked, voice breaking. “I’m nothing like the women you usually surround yourself with.” “That’s exactly why I want you. You’re real. You’re not after my money. You challenge me. You’ll make this believable.” He gave me that dangerous half-smile. “Just say yes, Emily. I’ll solve every single one of your problems. I promise.” I stood there, torn apart inside. One choice meant protecting my mother and keeping a roof over our heads. The other meant holding onto my pride and principles… and watching everything I loved crumble. My hands trembled at my sides. I hated how tempting his offer sounded. I hated him for making it. Cade waited patiently, those sharp eyes studying every flicker of emotion on my face.Emily POV“Choose now, Emily,” Cade said coldly. “I don’t have all day.”“How do I even know my parents actually went on this so-called holiday?” I challenged.Without a word, Cade pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and put it on speaker. On the third ring, I heard my father’s voice.“Good evening, Mr. Wilburn. I just wanted to check if you arrived safely.”“Of course! We’re already at the hotel. They even gave us the bridal suite,” my father replied cheerfully.“And how is Mrs. Wilburn? Is she resting as the doctor ordered?”“She’s sleeping right now. The nurse you hired is taking excellent care of her.”Cade ended the call and looked at me. “Do you believe me now?”“You sent them on a trip when my mother hasn’t even fully recovered?” I whispered in disbelief.“It’s the best way for her to relax and heal,” he replied flatly. “Now make your choice. Good terms or bad terms?”Knowing he was more than capable of making his threat a reality, I felt my resistance crumble. I nodded slow
Emily POVI stood by the large bedroom window, staring out at the breathtaking beauty of Cain Island. The turquoise ocean, the lush greenery, and the elegant white buildings scattered across the landscape — it was almost unreal.Strangely, the island felt… familiar.A strange warmth settled in my chest, as if I had known this place my entire life. The feeling unsettled me. How could somewhere I had never been before feel like home?A soft knock pulled me from my thoughts. A young woman in a maid’s uniform entered, offering a polite curtsy.“Good afternoon, Mrs. Callaghan. I’m Tracy, your personal maid.”“I don’t need a personal maid,” I said quickly. “I can take care of myself.”Tracy’s face fell. She dropped to her knees, eyes filling with panic.“Please, ma’am… don’t send me away. If you reject me, I’ll be fired. This is the only good-paying job on the island, and it’s always been my dream to work here. Please… you’re my last hope.”I sighed. I wanted privacy, but turning her away w
Emily POV“What rubbish are you saying?” Cade’s mother shouted, her voice sharp with disbelief.“It’s not rubbish, Mother,” Cade replied firmly. “I told you I was in love with someone. Emily is that woman. We got married a week ago. She is not my mistress.”“But what about Isabel?” his mother cried. “She has waited for you her entire life! She loves you. She would cherish you until her last breath. How could you do this to her?”“I have never loved Isabel,” Cade said coldly. “I made that clear to everyone long ago. Stop blaming me for following my heart.”Mother and son glared at each other, the tension thick enough to choke on. Then Cade took my hand and pulled me toward the stairs.“This is madness, Cade!” his mother hurled after us. “Complete madness!”A loud slap echoed through the hall. Cade’s mother had struck him across the face.“How dare you still ask for your father when you’ve brought this into our home?” she hissed, glaring at me with pure contempt.“My wife is not a ‘thin
Cade POVI sat in silence on the plane, staring out the window. I didn’t know where to begin explaining Cain Island to her — the place where I grew up, a paradise that held both beauty and buried nightmares.I rarely returned. Between my mother’s constant pressure to marry Isabel and the dark secrets I’d left behind, the island felt more like a cage than a home. Secrets that could destroy everything I had built if they ever came to light.“I’m waiting,” Emily said, snapping me out of my thoughts.I wished she wasn’t so curious. But I had already learned that once Emily wanted answers, she wouldn’t stop until she got them.“The name of the island is Cain,” I said quietly.“Cain?” She frowned. “Why would anyone name an island after the biblical killer?”“It’s been called that for generations. My stepfather wasn’t allowed to change it when he took over.”“Is it beautiful?” she asked. For the first time, I saw a genuine, soft smile on her face. It caught me off guard.“Yes,” I replied, un
Emily POV“Legalize those documents immediately,” Cade instructed his lawyer. “I want a copy with me at all times so Emily here never forgets she’s now bound to me.”“Yes, sir. I’ll have them ready right away.” The lawyer turned to me with a polite nod. “I wish you a quick recovery, Miss Wilburn.”The moment the door closed behind him, silence filled the room. My mind was spinning with a thousand worries — what would happen during this fake marriage, what would happen after, and how deeply I had just trapped myself.“Stop thinking about Brad,” Cade said suddenly. “It’s for your own good.”“I already told you — there’s nothing going on between Brad and me!” I yelled.“And as I’ve said, I don’t believe you.” His voice was cold. “Brad played a big role in your life. I won’t tolerate him showing up and claiming you when I’ve already made you mine.”“First of all, Mr. Callaghan, I’m not yours,” I shot back. “And I don’t belong to Brad either. You made it very clear in that contract that yo
Emily POVI stood frozen like a statue, staring at the man in front of me.Brad.It had been a whole year since he abandoned me for his rich boss’s daughter. A whole year of silence. And now here he was, standing at my doorstep like nothing had happened.“My love,” he said softly, stepping forward. Before I could react, he pulled me into his arms and kissed me. His grip was tight, possessive. I tried to push him away, but he held on stronger. When he finally released me, he took both my hands in his, smiling like he had won a prize.“I’ve missed you so much, Emily. You have no idea how much.”Anger surged through me. I shoved him hard in the chest.“Get out of here before I do something I regret,” I hissed.“You can’t still be angry with me,” he said, looking genuinely surprised. “I only left so I could make money for us.”“And did you make that money?” I asked coldly.“Yes. A lot of it.”“Good. Then go spend it on someone else,” I snapped. “Because I don’t want you or your money.”“E
