Chapter Thirty-Seven: The Fallout

Henry Ashford released his statement at noon.

Felix brought it to me on his tablet. He didn't say anything. He just set it on my desk and stepped back.

I read it twice. Then I read it again.

The allegations against me and my family are baseless and defamatory. I have spent my entire career building a legacy of integrity and service. I will not allow anonymous sources and disgruntled individuals to destroy what I have built. My legal team is exploring all options, including defamation claims against those who have spread these lies.

I set the tablet down.

"He's scared," I said.

Felix frowned. "He sounds angry."

"Angry is scared. When Henry Ashford is confident, he doesn't release statements. He ignores accusations until they go away."

"And now?"

"Now he's fighting. That means we're hurting him."

Felix nodded. He didn't look convinced. But he didn't argue.

I stood. I walked to the window.

"Get me everything on his legal team," I said. "Every lawyer. Every firm. Every connection. I want to know who's advising him."

"On it."

He left. I stayed at the window.

Henry was scared. That was good. But scared men did desperate things. And desperate men were dangerous.

---

By three, the stock had dropped another fifteen percent. By five, three major investors had publicly withdrawn their support. By seven, the board had called an emergency meeting.

I watched it happen from my office. Felix sent updates every hour. I read each one. I didn't respond.

At eight, Adrian appeared in my doorway.

"You should eat," he said.

"I'm not hungry."

"You're never hungry."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"Fine," I said.

We walked to the kitchen. He made something simple. Eggs. Toast. Coffee. We ate in silence.

After a while, he said, "Henry is going to retaliate."

"I know."

"He's going to come after you. Not just with lawyers. He's going to try to destroy you."

"I know."

Adrian set down his fork. He looked at me.

"You're not afraid."

"No."

"Why not?"

I considered the question. I thought about my previous life. My death. My rebirth.

"Because I've already lost everything," I said. "He can't take anything from me that I haven't already lost."

Adrian was quiet. Then he said, "He can take me."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"He can try," I said.

"He will try."

"Then we'll stop him."

He didn't respond. He just looked at me. Neither of us spoke.

I picked up my fork. I finished my eggs. He watched me.

"Thank you," I said.

"For what?"

"For the food. For the honesty. For not telling me I'm wrong."

He didn't smile. But he nodded.

---

Julian called at eleven that night.

I was in my office. I was reviewing the latest financial reports. My phone buzzed. I saw his name. I answered.

"You did this."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"The article. The statement. The investors. You did this."

"Prove it."

He was breathing hard. I could hear it through the phone.

"You're going to regret this," he said.

"I've heard that before."

"You think Kane can protect you? He can't. Not from me."

I didn't respond. I just waited.

"You're going to lose everything. Just like I did."

"No," I said. "I'm going to take everything. Just like you took everything from me."

I hung up. I set the phone on my desk. I didn't move.

Felix appeared in my doorway. "Everything okay?"

"Julian. He's panicking."

"Good."

"Yes. But panicking men do desperate things."

---

The package arrived the next morning.

Felix brought it to me. A small box. White paper. No return address. Security had scanned it. It was clean.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph. My mother. Standing in a garden I didn't recognize. She was smiling. She looked happy.

On the back, in Julian's handwriting: You're not the only one who remembers.

I set the photograph down. My hands were steady.

"Where did this come from?" Felix asked.

"I don't know. But he's trying to scare me."

"Is it working?"

I looked at the photograph. My mother's face. Her smile. The life she never got to live.

"No," I said. "It's not."

---

That night, I found Adrian in his office.

He was on the phone. He hung up when he saw me.

"What happened?"

I handed him the photograph. He looked at it. He turned it over. He read the message.

"Julian," he said.

"Yes."

"He's trying to get inside your head."

"I know."

"Is it working?"

"No."

He set the photograph down. He looked at me.

"We need to move faster," he said.

"I know."

"We need to go public with everything. The evidence. The documents. The witnesses. Everything."

I considered this. "If we do that, Volkov will know. He'll disappear completely."

"He's already disappeared."

"Then we don't have anything to lose."

Adrian was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded.

"Tomorrow," he said. "We go public tomorrow."

I didn't answer. I just looked at the photograph on his desk. My mother's face. Her smile.

Tomorrow.

Sloane found the florist before I finished my coffee. She walked into my office at seven in the morning, still in her training clothes, and set a receipt on my desk."White roses. Delivered to the cemetery three days ago. Paid for in cash."I picked up the receipt. No name. No address. Just a florist's stamp and a time."Who ordered them?""The owner doesn't remember. Cash customers don't leave impressions."I set the receipt down. "Then we find someone who does."---The florist was a small shop on the east side. The kind of place that had been there for thirty years and would be there for thirty more. Sloane waited outside. I walked in alone. The woman behind the counter was older. Gray hair. Reading glasses on a chain. She looked up when I entered."Can I help you?""I'm here about a delivery. White roses. Three days ago. To the cemetery on Mill Road."She frowned. She set down her magazine."I remember that one."I kept my voice even. "Do you remember who ordered it?"She thought

Felix found me in the conference room at six in the morning.I hadn't slept. I'd been reviewing documents since three. The photographs from the warehouse were spread across the table. Timestamps. Locations. Faces I didn't recognize. He set a coffee in front of me. He didn't sit."What?" I asked. He handed me his phone. A message from Sloane.Package delivered to the penthouse this morning. • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter Forty-One: Mira's Plan

Mira called me on a Sunday.I didn't recognize the number. I almost didn't answer. But something made me pick up."Elena."Her voice. I hadn't heard it in weeks. Not since the charity dinner. Not since she'd stood behind Julian and watched him threaten me."Why are you calling?""I need to see you.""No.""It's about Julian. He's planning something. Something big."I paused. I looked at the phone. I looked at the door."Where?"---We met at a park on the edge of the city. Public. Open. Nowhere to hide. She was already there when I arrived. Sitting on a bench. No makeup. Hair pulled back. She looked smaller than I remembered. Thinner.I sat on the bench across from her. I didn't sit beside her."You look terrible," I said."Thanks.""What do you want?"She looked at me. Her eyes were red. She'd been crying. Or not sleeping. Or both."Julian is falling apart," she said. "The article. The statement. The investors. He's not thinking clearly.""And?""And he's planning something. Somethin

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride    Chapter Forty: The Truce

The routine returned slowly. Not all at once. Not like before. But slowly. Carefully. Like two people learning to walk on ice.I made coffee in the morning. He drank it. He left tea on my nightstand. I drank it. We ate dinner together. We didn't talk about Volkov. We didn't talk about Henry. We didn't talk about the plan. We just talked about nothing. It was enough. On the third night, I found a book on my nightstand. Not tea. Not coffee. A book. A novel I'd mentioned once, weeks ago, in passing. I'd said I wanted to read it. I'd forgotten I'd said it. He hadn't.I picked it up. I read the first page. Then the second. Then the third.I read until three in the morning. I finished it in two days. When I was done, I left it on his desk with a note.Thank you. It was perfect. He didn't mention it. But the next day, there was another book on my nightstand.I almost smiled.---Felix noticed the shift."You two are talking again," he said."We were always talking.""You were talking about w

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Distance

We didn't speak for two days. Not because we were angry. The argument had burned itself out by the time we got back to the penthouse. There was nothing left to say. Volkov was gone. The trail was cold. We had everything we needed to destroy Henry and Julian, but the final piece—the connection to organized crime—was out of reach.Adrian retreated to his office. I retreated to mine. We passed each other in the hallway. We nodded. We didn't stop.Felix noticed. Of course he did."You two are fighting," he said."We're not fighting.""You're not talking.""We're busy."He looked at me. He didn't believe me. But he didn't push.I buried myself in work. I reviewed documents. I cross-referenced evidence. I built the case against Henry piece by piece. I didn't sleep. I didn't eat. I just worked. On the second night, I found myself in the living room at midnight.I couldn't sleep. The nightmares were back. The falling. The balcony. Julian's face. Felix called me at seven in the morning.I was already awake. I'd been awake since five. The photograph of my mother was still on my nightstand. I'd looked at it three times before the sun came up."Volkov is moving," Felix said.I sat up. "What do you mean?""He's transferring assets. Closing accounts. Pulling out of investments. He's liquidating."I was already out of bed. Already reaching for clothes."How much time?""A day. Maybe two. Once he's liquid, he's gone.""I'm on my way."I hung up. I dressed in four minutes. I walked to Adrian's office. He was already there. He was already on the phone.I waited. He hung up."Volkov," he said."I know.""He's running.""We can't let him."Adrian looked at me. His jaw was tight. "We won't. I'm moving the team now. We freeze what we can. We track what we can't.""I want to be there.""No."I stared at him. "What?""You're not coming. It's too dangerous. Volkov has people everywhere. If he sees you—""He won't see me. I'll stay in the car.
