Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Questions

The story broke on a Monday.

Not the full story. Not the evidence. Not the documents. Just enough to raise questions. A journalist I'd never met published an article about Ashford Holdings. The headline was simple: Questions Mount Around Ashford Holdings' Offshore Accounts.

I read it three times. Then I set it down.

Felix was watching me. He was waiting for a reaction.

"It's a start," I said.

"It's more than a start. It's the first crack."

I looked at the article again. The journalist had done her homework. She'd found the accounts. She'd found the transfers. She'd found the shell companies. She hadn't connected them to Henry yet. But she was close.

"Who leaked it?" I asked.

Felix shifted his weight. "We did. Anonymously. Through a source we trust."

"Adrian knows?"

"Adrian arranged it."

I nodded. I wasn't surprised. Adrian didn't do anything without a reason.

By noon, the article had been shared a thousand times. By three, Julian's company had released a statement denying everything. By five, the stock had dropped eight percent.

I watched it happen from my office. I didn't feel satisfied. I didn't feel anything.

---

That night, Adrian found me in the living room.

I was sitting on the couch. The television was on. I wasn't watching it.

"You should eat," he said.

"I'm not hungry."

"You need to eat."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"I know," I said. "I just—"

I stopped. I didn't know how to finish the sentence.

He walked to the couch. He sat beside me. Not too close. Not too far.

"You thought you'd feel something," he said.

"Yes."

"And you don't."

"No."

He didn't respond. He just waited.

"I've been planning this for so long," I said. "I've been thinking about it. Dreaming about it. And now it's happening. And I feel nothing."

"That's not nothing."

I looked at him. "What?"

"That feeling. The emptiness. That's not nothing. That's the absence of something you've been carrying for years. You're not feeling nothing. You're feeling the weight lift."

I considered that. I didn't know if he was right. But I didn't argue.

"What did you feel?" I asked. "When you started going after Henry. When you started planning."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "The same thing."

"And did it go away?"

"Eventually."

"When?"

"When I found something else to focus on."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"What?" I asked.

He didn't answer. He just looked at me. That same unnamed something crossed his face. This time, he didn't hide it.

"You," he said.

I didn't respond. I didn't know how.

We sat there. The television flickered. The city hummed outside.

After a while, I leaned my head against his shoulder. He didn't move. He just let me.

We stayed there until the sun came up.

---

The next morning, Julian called.

I was in my office. I was reviewing the article. I saw his name on the screen. I let it ring.

He called again. And again. On the fifth call, I answered.

"What?"

"You did this."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"The article. The questions. The stock drop. You did this."

"Prove it."

He was quiet. I could hear him breathing. Heavy. Angry.

"You're going to regret this," he said.

"I've heard that before."

"You think you're safe? You think Kane can protect you? He can't. Not from me."

I didn't respond. I just waited.

"You're going to lose everything," he said. "Just like I did."

"No," I said. "I'm going to take everything. Just like you took everything from me."

I hung up.

---

That night, Adrian found me on the balcony.

I was standing at the railing. The air was cold. I didn't care.

"Julian called," he said.

"I know."

"What did he say?"

"That I'm going to regret this. That I'm going to lose everything."

Adrian stepped beside me. He didn't touch me. He just stood there.

"And what did you say?"

"That I'm going to take everything. Just like he took everything from me."

He looked at me. I looked at him.

"He's going to escalate," he said.

"I know."

"He's going to come after you."

"He already did."

Adrian didn't respond. He just looked at me.

"I'm not afraid," I said.

"I know."

"Then stop looking at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like I'm going to break."

He held my gaze. Neither of us spoke.

"I'm not looking at you like you're going to break," he said. "I'm looking at you like I can't lose you."

I didn't respond. I didn't know how.

He reached for my hand. He took it. His fingers were warm. Steady.

"Let's finish this," he said.

I looked at our hands. I looked at him.

"Okay," I said.

We stood there. The city hummed outside. The wind picked up.

After a while, I leaned my head against his shoulder. He didn't move. He just let me.

We stayed there until the sun came up.

The routine returned slowly. Not all at once. Not like before. But slowly. Carefully. Like two people learning to walk on ice.I made coffee in the morning. He drank it. He left tea on my nightstand. I drank it. We ate dinner together. We didn't talk about Volkov. We didn't talk about Henry. We didn't talk about the plan. We just talked about nothing. It was enough. On the third night, I found a book on my nightstand. Not tea. Not coffee. A book. A novel I'd mentioned once, weeks ago, in passing. I'd said I wanted to read it. I'd forgotten I'd said it. He hadn't.I picked it up. I read the first page. Then the second. Then the third.I read until three in the morning. I finished it in two days. When I was done, I left it on his desk with a note.Thank you. It was perfect. He didn't mention it. But the next day, there was another book on my nightstand.I almost smiled.---Felix noticed the shift."You two are talking again," he said."We were always talking.""You were talking about w

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Distance

We didn't speak for two days. Not because we were angry. The argument had burned itself out by the time we got back to the penthouse. There was nothing left to say. Volkov was gone. The trail was cold. We had everything we needed to destroy Henry and Julian, but the final piece—the connection to organized crime—was out of reach.Adrian retreated to his office. I retreated to mine. We passed each other in the hallway. We nodded. We didn't stop.Felix noticed. Of course he did."You two are fighting," he said."We're not fighting.""You're not talking.""We're busy."He looked at me. He didn't believe me. But he didn't push.I buried myself in work. I reviewed documents. I cross-referenced evidence. I built the case against Henry piece by piece. I didn't sleep. I didn't eat. I just worked. On the second night, I found myself in the living room at midnight.I couldn't sleep. The nightmares were back. The falling. The balcony. Julian's face. I'd wake up gasping, my hands clutching the she

Felix called me at seven in the morning.I was already awake. I'd been awake since five. The photograph of my mother was still on my nightstand. I'd looked at it three times before the sun came up."Volkov is moving," Felix said.I sat up. "What do you mean?""He's transferring assets. Closing accounts. Pulling out of investments. He's liquidating."I was already out of bed. Already reaching for clothes."How much time?""A day. Maybe two. Once he's liquid, he's gone.""I'm on my way."I hung up. I dressed in four minutes. I walked to Adrian's office. He was already there. He was already on the phone.I waited. He hung up."Volkov," he said."I know.""He's running.""We can't let him."Adrian looked at me. His jaw was tight. "We won't. I'm moving the team now. We freeze what we can. We track what we can't.""I want to be there.""No."I stared at him. "What?""You're not coming. It's too dangerous. Volkov has people everywhere. If he sees you—""He won't see me. I'll stay in the car.

Henry Ashford released his statement at noon.Felix brought it to me on his tablet. He didn't say anything. He just set it on my desk and stepped back.I read it twice. Then I read it again. The allegations against me and my family are baseless and defamatory. I have spent my entire career building a legacy of integrity and service. I will not allow anonymous sources and disgruntled individuals to destroy what I have built. My legal team is exploring all options, including defamation claims against those who have spread these lies.I set the tablet down."He's scared," I said.Felix frowned. "He sounds angry.""Angry is scared. When Henry Ashford is confident, he doesn't release statements. He ignores accusations until they go away.""And now?""Now he's fighting. That means we're hurting him."Felix nodded. He didn't look convinced. But he didn't argue.I stood. I walked to the window."Get me everything on his legal team," I said. "Every lawyer. Every firm. Every connection. I want

Felix found Claire Bennett before I asked him to.He brought her file to my office on a Tuesday morning. A photograph. A resume. Three pages of notes. He set it on my desk and stepped back like he expected me to throw it."She's been investigating Henry for two years," he said. "She's careful. She's thorough. She hasn't published anything yet because she can't verify her sources."I opened the file. Claire Bennett. Thirty-two. Columbia graduate. Former financial analyst. Now an investigative journalist for a magazine that didn't print gossip. Only facts."Can we trust her?""I don't know. But she's not connected to Henry. She's not connected to Volkov. She's not connected to anyone who could hurt us."I closed the file. "Set up a meeting."We met at a hotel bar two blocks from her office. Public. Neutral. No one would look twice at two women having drinks. She was already there when I arrived. Dark hair pulled back. Simple blazer. She didn't stand when I approached. She just watched m

I read the letter three times. My father. Richard Voss. The source. The man who fed my mother information. The man who helped her build a case against Henry Ashford. The man who was supposed to protect her.I set the letter down. My hands were steady. My heart was beating normally.Daniel was watching me. His face was pale."You didn't know," he said."No.""I didn't either. I swear."I looked at him. He looked at me."Victor knew," I said. "He knew all along.""He was trying to protect us.""By lying?""By waiting. Until we were ready."I didn't respond. I didn't know how.Adrian walked in. He'd been securing the perimeter with Sloane. He saw our faces. He stopped."What happened?"I handed him the letter. He read it. His jaw tightened."Your father," he said."Yes.""He was the source.""Yes."He set the letter down. He looked at me."This changes things.""How?""Your father is still alive. Or he was. If he was the source, he might still have information. He might still be able to
