Chapter Twenty-Eight: The Second Appearance

The invitation arrived on a Wednesday.

A charity auction. Black tie. The kind of event where the same people who'd watched me fall from grace would now watch me rise. I recognized the host's name. A socialite who'd been friends with Julian's mother. A woman who'd smiled at me at my engagement party and whispered behind my back.

I read the invitation twice. Then I set it on Adrian's desk.

He looked at it. Then at me.

"You want to go."

"I want to be seen."

He picked up the invitation. He studied it. "Julian will be there."

"I know."

"Mira will be there."

"I know."

He set it down. He looked at me. "You're not afraid."

"I'm not."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded. "Then we'll go."

---

I wore red.

Not black. Not the safe, invisible color I'd been hiding in. Red. Bold. Deliberate. The kind of dress that said I wasn't hiding anymore.

Adrian wore a black suit. No tie. He looked at me when I walked out of my room. He didn't smile. But something in his eyes shifted.

"Red," he said.

"You don't like it?"

"I didn't say that."

I almost smiled. Almost.

We walked to the car. He opened the door. I slid in. He followed.

The drive was quiet. The city lights slid past. I watched them. I didn't feel nervous. I didn't feel anything.

---

The venue was a hotel ballroom. Crystal chandeliers. White tablecloths. A jazz quartet in the corner. I'd been here before. With Julian. At another event. Another life.

We walked in together. Adrian's hand rested on my back. The cameras flashed. I didn't blink.

The room shifted when they saw me.

Not all at once. But slowly. A woman near the bar stopped mid-sentence. A man by the stage turned and stared. I could feel their eyes. I could hear the whispers. Elena Voss. Back from the dead. Married to Adrian Kane. Dressed in red.

I didn't look at any of them. I just walked through the room like I owned it.

Julian was by the terrace doors. Mira was beside him. She saw me first. Her face went pale.

Julian turned. He looked at me. Then at Adrian. Then at my dress.

He didn't approach. He just stood there. Watching. His jaw tight. His hands curled at his sides.

I smiled at him. It wasn't a kind smile.

---

We made it through dinner without incident.

I didn't eat much. I didn't need to. I was too focused on the room. On Julian. On Mira. On the whispers that followed me wherever I went.

Adrian noticed. Of course he did.

"You're not eating," he said.

"I'm not hungry."

"You're not hungry because you're watching him."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"Eat," he said. "You'll need your strength."

I picked up my fork. I took a bite. He nodded.

We finished dinner. The auction began. I didn't pay attention. I just watched Julian. He was drinking more than he should. His hands were unsteady. Mira was talking to him. He wasn't listening.

At ten, the auction ended. People began to leave. I stood. Adrian stood. We walked toward the exit.

Julian blocked the door.

"Elena," he said. "We need to talk."

"Move."

"Just five minutes."

"Move, Julian."

He didn't move. He just stood there. His eyes were bloodshot. His breath smelled like whiskey.

"You think you've won," he said. "You think marrying him makes you untouchable. But you're wrong."

Adrian stepped between us. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't touch Julian. He just stood there.

"Walk away," he said.

Julian laughed. It was a hollow sound. "You're protecting her? You? You don't even know her."

"I know enough."

"You know nothing. She's a liar. She's a whore. She—"

Adrian moved.

He didn't hit Julian. He didn't shove him. He just stepped closer. Close enough that Julian had to look up. Close enough that Julian took a step back.

"I said walk away."

Julian stared at him. His face flushed. His hands clenched. For a moment, I thought he might swing. He didn't.

He turned and walked away.

Mira followed him. She didn't look at me. She just walked. Her heels clicked against the marble floor.

I watched them go. I didn't feel anything.

---

That night, I found Adrian on the balcony.

He was standing at the railing. The air was cold. He didn't seem to notice.

"You didn't have to do that," I said.

He turned. He looked at me. "Do what?"

"Protect me. He wasn't going to hurt me."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

He held my gaze. Neither of us spoke.

"He called you a liar," he said. "He called you a whore. And you didn't flinch."

"I've heard worse."

"That doesn't make it right."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"Why do you care?" I asked.

"What?"

"Why do you care what he says about me?"

He didn't answer immediately. He just looked at me.

"I told you," he said. "I'm not going to let him touch you."

"That's not what I asked."

He was quiet. The city hummed outside. The wind picked up.

"I care," he said, "because you deserve better."

I didn't respond. I didn't know how.

He reached for my hand. He took it. His fingers were warm. Steady.

"Let's go home," he said.

I looked at our hands. I looked at him.

"Okay," I said.

We walked to the car. He opened the door. I slid in. He followed.

The drive was quiet. The city lights slid past. I watched them.

I was still wearing his jacket. It smelled like him. Something clean. Something warm.

I didn't take it off.

Sloane found the florist before I finished my coffee. She walked into my office at seven in the morning, still in her training clothes, and set a receipt on my desk."White roses. Delivered to the cemetery three days ago. Paid for in cash."I picked up the receipt. No name. No address. Just a florist's stamp and a time."Who ordered them?""The owner doesn't remember. Cash customers don't leave impressions."I set the receipt down. "Then we find someone who does."---The florist was a small shop on the east side. The kind of place that had been there for thirty years and would be there for thirty more. Sloane waited outside. I walked in alone. The woman behind the counter was older. Gray hair. Reading glasses on a chain. She looked up when I entered."Can I help you?""I'm here about a delivery. White roses. Three days ago. To the cemetery on Mill Road."She frowned. She set down her magazine."I remember that one."I kept my voice even. "Do you remember who ordered it?"She thought

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter Forty-Two: The Threat

Felix found me in the conference room at six in the morning.I hadn't slept. I'd been reviewing documents since three. The photographs from the warehouse were spread across the table. Timestamps. Locations. Faces I didn't recognize. He set a coffee in front of me. He didn't sit."What?" I asked. He handed me his phone. A message from Sloane.Package delivered to the penthouse this morning. No return address. No stamp. Security scanned it. It's clean. But you need to see it.I stood. I didn't drink the coffee.---The package was waiting for me in Adrian's office.A small box. White paper. No markings.Adrian was already there. He hadn't opened it. He was waiting for me."Together," he said.I nodded. I opened it.Inside was a photograph. My mother's grave. The headstone. The flowers I'd left there three weeks ago. Wilted. Dead.On the back, in handwriting I didn't recognize: You should have stayed quiet.I set the photograph down. My hands were steady."Julian," Adrian said."Or someo

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter Forty-One: Mira's Plan

Mira called me on a Sunday.I didn't recognize the number. I almost didn't answer. But something made me pick up."Elena."Her voice. I hadn't heard it in weeks. Not since the charity dinner. Not since she'd stood behind Julian and watched him threaten me."Why are you calling?""I need to see you.""No.""It's about Julian. He's planning something. Something big."I paused. I looked at the phone. I looked at the door."Where?"---We met at a park on the edge of the city. Public. Open. Nowhere to hide. She was already there when I arrived. Sitting on a bench. No makeup. Hair pulled back. She looked smaller than I remembered. Thinner.I sat on the bench across from her. I didn't sit beside her."You look terrible," I said."Thanks.""What do you want?"She looked at me. Her eyes were red. She'd been crying. Or not sleeping. Or both."Julian is falling apart," she said. "The article. The statement. The investors. He's not thinking clearly.""And?""And he's planning something. Somethin

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride    Chapter Forty: The Truce

The routine returned slowly. Not all at once. Not like before. But slowly. Carefully. Like two people learning to walk on ice.I made coffee in the morning. He drank it. He left tea on my nightstand. I drank it. We ate dinner together. We didn't talk about Volkov. We didn't talk about Henry. We didn't talk about the plan. We just talked about nothing. It was enough. On the third night, I found a book on my nightstand. Not tea. Not coffee. A book. A novel I'd mentioned once, weeks ago, in passing. I'd said I wanted to read it. I'd forgotten I'd said it. He hadn't.I picked it up. I read the first page. Then the second. Then the third.I read until three in the morning. I finished it in two days. When I was done, I left it on his desk with a note.Thank you. It was perfect. He didn't mention it. But the next day, there was another book on my nightstand.I almost smiled.---Felix noticed the shift."You two are talking again," he said."We were always talking.""You were talking about w

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Distance

We didn't speak for two days. Not because we were angry. The argument had burned itself out by the time we got back to the penthouse. There was nothing left to say. Volkov was gone. The trail was cold. We had everything we needed to destroy Henry and Julian, but the final piece—the connection to organized crime—was out of reach.Adrian retreated to his office. I retreated to mine. We passed each other in the hallway. We nodded. We didn't stop.Felix noticed. Of course he did."You two are fighting," he said."We're not fighting.""You're not talking.""We're busy."He looked at me. He didn't believe me. But he didn't push.I buried myself in work. I reviewed documents. I cross-referenced evidence. I built the case against Henry piece by piece. I didn't sleep. I didn't eat. I just worked. On the second night, I found myself in the living room at midnight.I couldn't sleep. The nightmares were back. The falling. The balcony. Julian's face. I'd wake up gasping, my hands clutching the she

Felix called me at seven in the morning.I was already awake. I'd been awake since five. The photograph of my mother was still on my nightstand. I'd looked at it three times before the sun came up."Volkov is moving," Felix said.I sat up. "What do you mean?""He's transferring assets. Closing accounts. Pulling out of investments. He's liquidating."I was already out of bed. Already reaching for clothes."How much time?""A day. Maybe two. Once he's liquid, he's gone.""I'm on my way."I hung up. I dressed in four minutes. I walked to Adrian's office. He was already there. He was already on the phone.I waited. He hung up."Volkov," he said."I know.""He's running.""We can't let him."Adrian looked at me. His jaw was tight. "We won't. I'm moving the team now. We freeze what we can. We track what we can't.""I want to be there.""No."I stared at him. "What?""You're not coming. It's too dangerous. Volkov has people everywhere. If he sees you—""He won't see me. I'll stay in the car.
