Chapter 10

Sophie Clark

•••

My eyes burned with rage as I tried to wrap my head around what just happened. Even though I knew Alex didn’t love me, he had never put his hands on me for all three years we have been married.

Why did he become violent all of a sudden?

He pulled my hair and I was too stunned to speak.

I couldn’t even be under the same roof as him, so I decided to go to my parents’ house.

Alex threatened me and I knew he could hurt me and our unborn child if he had the chance.

I took the divorce papers with me. When I arrived at their house, they weren’t home.

The maid welcomed me.

“Where are my parents?” I asked, hovering anxiously around the house.

The maid replied, “They stepped out a few hours ago, they’ll be back soon.”

I nodded my head. “Get me a glass of water please.”

I couldn’t stay still, I kept moving restlessly around the house.

After drinking the water, I went into the room that used to be mine. It still looked the same.

Memories flooded my mind, I u

Chapter 23Sophie Clarke•••I rolled my suitcase across the airport terminal. My flight back to California was in forty minutes. I exhaled, excited to be going back home, to my daughter, and never run into Alex again. Just as I stepped into the queue for boarding, my phone vibrated. Unknown number. I answered the call. “Hello.” Alex’s voice echoed from the other end of the line.My breath hitched. I frowned and answered sharply. “How did you get my number?” “That doesn’t matter right now, please just hear me out.” He sounded desperate. “Please, Sophie.”I clicked my tongue. “You’re stalking me now? Answer me. How did you get my number?” Before he could even respond, I added. “As a matter of fact don’t call me again.”The loudspeaker from the airport was announcing final calls from passengers, which Alex heard. “You’re going back?” He asked. I exhaled sharply. “Don’t call me again.”“Sophie… wait, please just listen to…”I ended the call before he could finish and silenced m

Chapter 22Alexander Cole•••What was I doing? Apologizing to Sophie? It felt so surreal.Who would have thought that a day would come when I would kneel to apologize to her? I stood there, staring at the slammed door, wondering if I had started generating feelings for Sophie or if I was just becoming a better person. Maybe all those years, I actually liked her but just suppressed my feelings because I didn’t think that she was good enough for me. Seeing her again just ignited something in me. I messed up at the restaurant, and I let my anger take control once more. Ethan was the cause of it this time. Why couldn’t he just stop meddling with things that belonged to me? First my company, now my ex-wife?I bit my lips and walked away from the door. I hoped I would see her again. As I drove back home, I felt so restless. My maid had already prepared dinner for me but I wasn’t in the mood for that. I lost my appetite, I was just thinking about Sophie. She flooded my memory. Why

Chapter 21 Sophie Clarke •••It was 3 p.m. the following day already, we agreed to have dinner that day but I wasn’t feeling up to it. I was having second thoughts. I wanted to come up with some excuse and say I had to leave but he knew I wasn’t leaving for two days. Maybe I could say I had an urgent meeting to attend to in California or my daughter was sick. I was the one who came up with the thought of having dinner again, so I couldn’t back out. I just had to go even though I felt like it was a mistake. He said he was going to pick me up. Well, that seemed too serious. I could use a cab but he refused. He was going to arrive by 6 p.m. so I started getting ready. Because I knew myself, I would take the whole time to get ready. Especially to decide on an outfit. He arrived at the hotel and called me. I walked out of the lobby, and he was parked right by the entrance and leaning against the car. He straightened when he saw me. His expression was warm and soft. “You look beau

Chapter 20 Sophie Clarke ••• I had never felt so irritated in my life. Why was Alexander acting like a child? He literally chased me out five years ago, why was he acting this way? He even dared to call me a slut. Could it be that after five years, he started to care? Or he’s just being genuinely stupid. I only felt bad for Ethan, being embarrassed that way. I knew Ethan was his rival but he wouldn’t dare walk up to Ethan if I weren’t there. He doesn’t have that audacity. He just seemed to act like he had all the power in his hands. That slap would reset his brain and should keep him away till I leave New York. Ethan’s face became dull and I understood. But even at that he kept on asking me if I was okay. Of course I was okay, I had never felt better. Seeing the look on Alex’s face after I slapped him made my heart leap for joy. It was satisfactory. “I’m sorry you had to be humiliated like that, it’s my fault,” I apologized calmly. He smiled, and

Chapter 19 Alexander Cole ••• I woke up late with a headache because when Samuel left, I stayed up drinking, and the question he asked kept replaying in my head. Why was I running after Sophie? Someone I never loved. I dragged myself from the bed and poured myself a glass of water. I looked at my phone and saw my assistant had called twice already, that was when I remembered I had a meeting to attend two hours ago. “Fuck!” I yelled. I wasn’t in any condition to attend a meeting but I had to go. My company had been running to the ground, and I was tired of everything. When Leila left I became so lost that my company suffered, I wished things could go back to normal. After I showered, I pulled out a button-down shirt with my black wrist watch from the closet. I didn’t have the energy to dress seriously. I drove to the office, pretending to care in meetings, like I wasn’t drained and on the verge of giving up. I was having serious hangovers, so I kept on staring at t

Chapter 18Sophie Clarke•••I yawned so loudly. We both slept off on the couch, I didn’t even bother going back to the hotel. I picked up my phone and saw a notification from Ethan. “What could he want now?” I whispered to myself. It was a text message from him, asking me to meet up for lunch as he had something to discuss concerning the deal. It was like a setup, just to get me to meet up with him aside from the business. I contemplated ignoring it, but it could be important. I didn’t want to miss out on this deal because of my pride. When I got up and went into the toilet to freshen up. Amanda was still sleeping, so I just did everything so quietly. By the time I was done, she had woken up already and handed me a cup of hot tea.I took the cup from her and sat down. “Thanks, baby.” I just kept looking at my phone, wondering what to reply. Should I really go out for lunch with him? Amanda noticed and asked. “Why’s your face like that? Are you okay?”I just turned the phone t
