A month earlier

With shaky hands and a smile of excitement plastered on her lips, Lena rang the doorbell of the large, elegantly structured house.

Adrenaline rushed up to her brain, and she felt jittery with happiness as her dirt-stained fingers made their way to caress the flat circular pendant of her golden necklace.

She walked over to the window beside the door and peered through. The classy golden brown interior was just as she remembered, but a bit shinier. "Looks like Adrian had the maids prepare for my return," she thought, her stomach fluttering with butterflies.

"I miss him so much!" She beamed and bounced back to the front door, ringing the bell again with more excitement.

"Coming!" A female voice sang from within.

Lena paused, frowning for a nanosecond. She knew that voice. "How thoughtful of Mira to come help Adrian set up the house," she thought, her heart ringing with more joy.

The door opened with a swift movement, and Lena's wide smile plastered back on her face. "Mira!!" she exclaimed, pulling her in for a hug, which Mira didn't return. Instead, Mira stood there with her eyes widened in shock.

"I'm so glad to see you, Mira," Lena said, but Mira pushed her away, looking her over with disgust.

Lena didn't mind. "You look so good, you know." She chuckled and continued, "Unlike me, though. The cells definitely didn't have disinfectant nor—"

"Baby, who's that?" A male voice interrupted, and Lena's soul brightened up more than it already was.

"Adrian!" She screamed, running towards him with her arms wide open, but in the blink of an eye, she felt a sharp pain in her neck, and she was on the ground.

Before she could realise what had just happened, Adrian and Mira towered over her. There was a look of satisfaction and spite on Mira's face and one of anger on Adrian's as she let out a slight cough.

"W—what's wrong?" Lena asked softly, looking from one person to the other as her hand made its way to her neck, which was starting to burn.

"Holy shit, Adrian, I still can't believe you got married to such a stupid human being!" Mira snared, with a fraustrated hand on her forehead.

"I know, right? What was I thinking?" Adrian growled, crouching to Lena's level.

"What's going on? Is everything alright?" Lena asked again, staring into her husband's eyes. But it didn't seem like the same man who stared back.

Her brows creased. "Adrian," she muttered softly.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Adrian asked.

Lena's voice quivered. "I—I don't understand. I just got released from prison. You were so busy at work. I didn't bother calling you, so I—"

"Shhh," he shushed.

Lena could feel hot liquid settle beneath her eyeballs. She didn't like his demeanour at all.

"I mean, what are you doing in my house, Lena?" Adrian asked, his tone cold.

Lena's face contorted in confusion. "I returned from prison to my husband's house."

Mira rolled her eyeballs. "She gets dumber by the second."

"Does this place look anything like where you were married into?" Lena turned to look around the house, though she could swear she walked into the right house. She turned back to him.

"You don't remember? We're married, Adrian. Two years ago, twenty-sixth of May, remember? You said you love me." A tear rolled down her cheeks as she explained in half a whisper.

"Oh, really?" His face lit up with a smile of mockery. "Where's the ring to prove it?"

Lena swiftly brought her fingers to her face, suddenly realising she hadn't left with her ring. She wiped off her tears and began touching every space, hoping they'd slipped it somewhere in her clothes.

"It's here, I swear," she said, repeating her action continuously. She didn't know which hurt more; the reality staring right in her face or the pain in her neck, which was getting worse with every movement her head made.

Either way, she felt her heart empty out, leaving a painful space that made more tears cascade down her cheeks and blur her vision.

"Anyway," Adrian stood up and walked away from her pathetic figure on the ground. "Without wasting anymore of my time," he collected a few stapled papers from Mira and gave her a deep kiss on the lips while Lena watched helplessly.

He tossed the papers on Lena's face, and as she blinked away the tears in her eyes, they landed on the heading of the page: "Divorce agreement."

"No, Adrian, no, please," she muttered, as her shattering heart echoed in her ears. She quickly stood up from the ground and slowly began walking towards them with the paper shaking terribly in her hands.

“I promise I won't touch your things anymore. I can live in the garage like you always wanted. I'll obey anything you tell me. Please don't do this to me." she could feel a migraine on one side of her head. A sickness she never had the chance to cure completely.

"Just sign the fucking documents and be on your way, Lena. You're stinking up the place." Mira said and turned back to Adrian, who was squeezing every part of her sophisticated body.

Lena stared back down at the tear stained documents which her dirty hands held. More tears dropped. “I have nowhere else to go," she said weakly. Remembering the terrors that awaited her if she went back home, especially in this state.

“Please,” she whispered, lips quivering

“You really don't have to sign it now. You can take it wherever you're going but make sure it's signed the next time you walk towards this building," Adrian warned sternly.

Mira proudly walked over to the door and held it open for her to leave.

Lena looked from one person to the other, not wanting to believe either one could betray her this way. Was this really happening? She thought as she slowly and weakly walked towards the door, remembering she hadn't eaten for days.

“Adrian." She suddenly stopped halfway through the door and turned around. With teary eyes, “I—”

Mira swiftly interrupted “Get out, Lena.”

Lena paced back and forth in the room, her mind racing as her eyes flickered to the clock now and then.'Twenty more minutes.' She walked back to her bed and sat on the edge, her toes tapping lightly on the ground in thought."Hurt those who hurt you." Alex's voice rang in her head once more. The more it repeated, the more she wanted to have her revenge.'But is it really worth it?' her mind whispered.Lena paused, her toe tapping. 'Is it?' she asked herself. But then she shook her head and stood up."They've hurt me enough." She muttered, then took up her phone and left the room.Keeping her eyes on the guard who was just done cleaning one of Thane's cars, she walked to the garage and hopped into the shotgun."Get in and drive." She ordered The guard hesitated, clearly confused, but followed her command.Just as the engine roared to life, Dante appeared from behind a parked car, his hands gloved."Where are you going?" Dante asked, his sharp eyes scanning her face.Lena looked at

Thane lazily lifted the bottle and turned it into the short glass on the counter before him.The motel bar was quiet and empty-just like he wanted. He wasn't in the mood to see people, and he might have someone arrested if there was some psycho heavily drunk and wanted to talk shit because they recognized him. Also, he really wanted the breathing space. A space away from everyone apart from the man behind at the bar who'd continue to serve him till he was ready to drag his ass to somewhere else.He burped and lightly banged his chest to get the gas out. Then he shook his head and rubbed his eyes, trying to see through the fog. But all he could see was bright light which seemed a bit distorted.'I need to lie down,' he said to himself and pushed the glass and bottle out of the way so he could place his head on the counter. He shut his eyes and sighed, hoping the voice in his head would shut the fuck up.The elevator dinged open and heavy, agile footsteps echoed across the quiet bar.Da

"The plan was to get the code. Not kill her child." Darius said through gritted teeth, his sharp eyes narrowed sternly at Cecil.Cecil turned away, pretending to have her attention on the occupants of the other tables, her glass of beer playing at her lips. This was the umpteenth time in just two days she was getting scolded like a child and she was getting even more frustrated each time."In the end, what did you gain from it?" Darius snapped. "Nothing Cecil! Once again, to let your ambition get the better of you!"Cecil suddenly slammed the glass onto the table with a loud bang. "Oh, stop it!" She yelled, drawing the attention of a few customers. She frowned, staring Darius straight in the eyes. "Stop making it sound like I pushed her down the damn stairs. She was struggling, and she lost her balance when I let her go.""And don't you lecture on my ambition because if anyone was going to benefit from it, it was you, Darius!" She spat. "Stop making me explain myself over and over li

Lena's head shifted slowly from side to side, soft, pained moans slipping from her lips.Thane rushed over to the bed and gently took her hand, looking at her face. "Lena," he called, his voice tight with worry, hoping she'd answer and finally open her eyes. But Lena's eyelids felt impossibly heavy, like they were being held down by bricks. The more her eyeballs moved within, searching for light, the more pain she felt. "Lena." Thane called again, his voice laced with concern. He'd never seen her this weak before and this state just made her look even smaller than she originally was. It was unbearable. The doctor stepped closer. "I think you should let her respond in her own time." He said softly.Lena inhaled deeply, then slowly, she raised her free hand, which Thane wasn't holding to her head. Her entire body burned, and she felt too weak to even open her mouth or her eyes."Lena." Thane called again. This time, Lena followed his voice and turned towards it even though her eyes

The entire world seemed to spin violently as Lena tumbled down the stairs. All she could hear was the sound of her own body bouncing on each step as she painfully and helplessly made her way down the stairs. Finally, her face hit the ground and all the strength left in her body evaporated with the wind, leaving her very lightweight. For a second, the entire room stood still with everyone holding their breath as if waiting for a confirmation that she was still aliveBut Lena just laid there, unable to move."Lena." Thane finally called, snapping out of the shock as he shoved the gun into Dante's hand and rushed towards her.He squatted and reached for her, pulling her into a sitting position while he placed her head on his chest.Pain shot through her entire body and settled in her stomach. She winced."Are you okay?" Thane asked, a deep frown on his face as she held her close. He took her hand in his. "Call an ambulance." He said to Dante, who immediately pulled out his phone.Lena

"Are you sure you had it on you?" Cecil asked as she slowly paced round the room, her arms folded. For the past few minutes, everyone maintained their place, thinking about what Lena had just said.If the necklace really had the code on it, then they were as good as cooked because it was uncertain whose hands it had fallen into.Lena's mind, on the other hand, was a mess. The feeling that she'd lost the closest thing she could use to represent her mother overshadowed the hurt from the betrayal she was feeling all over again from everyone she trusted. She sat on the edge of the bed with no tears left to cry, searching her mind for how and where the necklace had gone missing.Nothing.'I never take it off.' she reminded herself. But she wasn't sure when it had gone missing because she never actually found any reason to double check if it was still around her neck. There could be only two possibilities as to the reason why it was gone-It had fallen off her neck when she was bundled into

Lena clutched her aching neck, her hair a tangled mess as a throbbing headache set in. Her heart pounded in her chest the longer it took for the newcomer to climb up the stairs. She sat curled up on the bed as Cecil shot her that creepy, victorious smile with her arms folded. It wasn't the same for Chad though, as there was something else on his face-regret? Fear? Pity?Lena couldn't place it. All she knew was whoever was climbing up those stairs sounded like bad news."Glad you could join us," Cecil greeted as the person closed in."Who made such a mess?" The man asked with obvious irritation as Cecil took an annoyed glance at Chad.Lena's heart sank just as she heard it shatter all over again."Where is she?" the man finally asked, and Chad kicked open the door wider.Lena's eyes widened as she met the man's gaze-not from surprise, but from realization.Adrian.Her vision blurred slightly as she blinked, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. Adrian took slow, steady steps to

It felt like his eyelids were being pressed down by heavy, unseen forces as they felt so heavy up open. But finally, with so much effort, he saw faint light, and even the faint light made him wince. 'Fuck!' he thought as a sharp pain tore through his body, forcing him to shut his eyes again. 'Don't be such a pussy. It's just a little pain,' his mind scolded as the motion he was feeling suddenly stopped. His eyes shot open again, and he was staring at the gray ceiling of his car.'Now where were we?... Lena.' Thane hurriedly sat up, holding his head as it throbbed painfully."You're up." Dante's voice came from the front seat, staring at him through the rearview mirror.Thane kept his head straight, his eyes on the empty road. "Where are we?" He asked carefully, so he didn't make too much face movement.Dante's eyes dropped to the device on his laps. "You were out cold. If you care to know." He informed, tapping away on the screen.Thane's fingers moved to his neck. His body tempera

"Call me whenever." Adrian's voice echoed in Lena's head. She swallowed hard, blinking multiple times as her mind raced.'You didn't call him when Mira, your stepsister, gave birth.''She's not her stepsister.' 'Doesn't matter!' the voice argued back. 'He'd given you his number to call him and you never did when you should have. And now you're stuck in here like Rapunzel and you want him to come save you? That's selfish, fool.'Lena's heartbeat sped up, matching the ticking clock in her head. Her fingers shook.Adrian was her only hope right now, because no other number was stored in her memory.'He did say I could call him if I needed someone, right?' she thought, biting her lower lip.Fuck it!She hurriedly rehearsed the numbers the way she'd read it on the card, then typed it on the phone and hit dial."I found the keys, Lena! I'm going to fucking tie you up. Let's see how much you can run your fucking-shit!!" Chad suddenly yelled along with painful groaning. The phone was ringing
