Eric's POV

I leaned back against the chair in my study, holding a glass of whiskey as I stared at the burning flames in the fireplace. I had not expected the day to leave me this restless, as my visit to Cole's office was supposed to give me the upper hand, along with a feeling of satisfaction. Instead, I left with my blood boiling and an infuriating anger. I couldn't stop thinking about Bella being pregnant with my child until the footsteps of my mother shattered my thoughts.

My jaw tightened as she entered. The doors flung open, and there she stood, as formidable as she had been all my life. She was beautifully dressed in an emerald silk gown, her hair coiffed into its perfect crown.

"You may think I don't know of all the things you do. All your movements," she said.

"What are you talking about, mother?" I asked.

"I heard," she snapped. "I heard what you did today."

I didn't move. "And what exactly did you hear, mother?"
