Diane

“How did it go?”

I ignored Jane and walked straight into my office.

Of course she noticed something was wrong—Jane always noticed. She followed me quietly, and trust my most competent PA not to leave me alone during my moments of distress.

I dropped my bag on my glass table and sank into the chair, releasing a loud sigh that I hadn’t realized I’d been holding.

I closed my eyes, trying to calm my racing mind and soothe the storm that Luca had stirred up. My chest heaved up and down, and my pulse thudded in my ears.

Hell…I’d almost had a panic attack in his office.

Something I regularly had in the past after our break up.

I thought I was over panic attacks but it seemed like Luca still had a hold on my heart and emotions—obviously.

And that’s going to be a serious problem if we’re goinb to be working together.

Jane cleared her throat loudly, cutting off my thoughts and bringing my mind back to the present.

I opened my eyes slowly, and there she was, standing in front of my desk, h

DianeFirst, it was the smell. The sterile smell of antiseptic was the first thing that filled my lungs, and the heavy weight on my chest that made it feel like every breath I took was dragging itself out of me.Slowly, I forced myself to take control of my eyelids and opened them, but I shut them again as the blinding white ceiling hit my eyes. For a moment, I couldn't move. My head felt heavy and the faint beeping sound somewhere close only confused me more.Where was I?I shifted slightly, and that was when I felt the sheets beneath me—they weren't mine. The faint sterile smell in the air and the quiet hums of the machines could only mean I was in one place.A hospital. My lids felt heavy, but I forced them open as my gaze moved slowly across the room, taking in everything and piecing them together. The IV line tugged against my skin and I panicked for a second before the memories came rushing back. The fever. The dizziness. The pains around my abdomen. My body giving up on me.And

Luca“You’ve got to be kidding me.”The words slipped out sharper than I had intended, but I didn’t care. Because standing there and asking for Diane was the last man I expected to see.Marko.His eyes shifted in my direction almost immediately, but he remained as calm as he was the last time I saw him at the gala. The nurse said something to him then pointed in my direction, where I stood, seething with rage. Without taking my eyes off of him, I slipped my phone back into my pocket, watching them as they approached me. Marko was as calm as ever, like my rage didn’t burn holes through him, and that triggered me even more.“Luca Belluci.” He extended his hand to me for a handshake, his voice unsurprisingly steady. “I don’t believe we’ve met officially yet.”My jaws clenched so hard that they ached, but I didn’t care.My eyes travelled from his face to his stretched-out arm, then back to his face. His audacity in requesting a handshake. He got the message and slowly withdrew his hand

LucaI watched the doctor as he looked through the device in his hand, possibly going through her records.I didn’t know what he saw that made him look up at me for a second, then back at the tablet, a slight frown on his face. While I was afraid of my lie being caught, I held my stance, waiting for him to speak.“Mr. Belluci,” he started gently. “As you know, your wife’s body has been fragile since the surgery…”“Wait. Surgery?” I snapped before I could stop myself. My chest tightened and my hands curled into fists beside me.The doctor looked up from the tablet with a calm face. “You shouldn't be surprised. You're her husband.”I exhaled silently, but didn't say anything. He cleared his throat, straightening his white coat. “She’s undergone surgery before. Nothing immediately life threatening, but it did leave her body more…vulnerable during recovery periods. Around this time of the year, her system tends to weaken and the aftereffects tend to resurface.”My jaw tightened.Surgery?

Luca“Diane?”Silence. My heart slammed against my ribs. The sharp sound of her cough still rang in my ears, but this silence was louder.“Diane!” I barked, my voice rising louder than I intended. I pressed the phone harder to my ear as if it would bring her voice back.“Answer me. Now.”Still nothing.A curse hissed past my teeth. I was already on my feet, shoving the chair back so hard that it hit the wall with a crack. My schedule and the meetings lined up for the day didn't matter at that moment. All I could think about was her.I hung up the call and tried to check her location, but it wasn't turned on.“Damn it!” I muttered.I tried her number again, but it went straight to voicemail. “Damn it!” I growled, raking my fingers through my perfectly gelled hair. The knot in my chest seemed to tighten and my mind spiraled with possibilities that I didn't want to imagine.I was left with only one other option.I dialed Diego and he picked up on the first ring.“Luca? It’s early—”“I

Diane“Fuck!”I knew a curse word shouldn't be the first thing I should be uttering on waking up, but the terrible feeling I woke up with needed to be described in a language.“What the hell…” I muttered under my breath, holding my head like that was going to stop the pain that threatened to split it open.My body ached all over, maybe from the discomfort of sleeping on the couch.I lifted myself into a sitting position, gathering my strength as I made my way to the kitchen for a glass of water. But the water didn't help with the headache or the body ache. So, I gave up and decided to go get my daughter ready for school.I opened her door gently and my face lit up into a smile the moment I saw her curled up in her bed, her doll clutched to her tiny chest like it was offering her some sort of comfort.“Anika?” I called gently, walking to her bed. “Anika?”“Hmm?” She responded sleepily.“Wake up, baby,” I said, shaking her gently. “Let's get you ready for school.”“I don't wanna go to
