Rain hammered relentlessly against the windshield as Evelyn Hart tightened her grip on the steering wheel, her knuckles turning pale from the force.

The storm roared around them, but it was nothing compared to the pounding of her own heartbeat, which echoed loudly in her ears.

Beside her, Amelia let out another piercing scream. “You did this on purpose!” Amelia cried, clutching her stomach as if in unbearable pain. “You’re jealous of me—you’ve always been jealous of me!”

Evelyn’s jaw clenched as frustration and disbelief surged through her.

Even now, in the middle of chaos—bleeding, terrified, and trapped in a violent storm—Amelia still knew exactly how to twist the knife.

“Stop yelling,” Evelyn said, her voice shaking despite her effort to stay composed. “I’m trying to get you to the hospital.”

The car suddenly skidded on the rain-slick highway, the tires struggling for control as water pooled beneath them.

A flash of lightning tore across the sky, illuminating everything in a blinding white glare, and in that single, frozen moment, headlights appeared directly ahead. too close, far too fast.

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. “Evelyn!” Amelia shrieked in terror.

The tires screeched violently against the wet asphalt as Evelyn jerked the steering wheel hard to the left.

The car spun out of control, metal twisted with a sickening crunch, and glass shattered in every direction.

And then—Everything went dark.

The first thing Evelyn became aware of was Amelia’s voice.

She was screaming again. But this time, there was no fear in it.

Only accusation. “It was her fault!”

The words cut through the darkness before Evelyn could even open her eyes. “She tried to kill me!”

Harsh hospital lights burned overhead as Evelyn’s vision slowly came into focus, the sterile smell of antiseptic filled the air, and voices echoed around her, doctors giving instructions, nurses moving quickly, her mother sobbing uncontrollably somewhere nearby.

Then another voice broke through the chaos, Sharp and Controlled. Seething with restrained fury. “Where is Evelyn?”

Charlie Warren.

At the sound of his voice, Evelyn’s chest tightened painfully.

Even after all these years, he still had that effect on her.

The boy she had once dragged from a freezing river had grown into a man everyone feared and respected. He was tall, sharp-eyed, untouchable— And completely devoted to Amelia.

But never to her.

Evelyn tried to push herself up, but a wave of agony tore through her shoulder, forcing a sharp gasp from her lips.

A nurse immediately stepped forward. “You need to rest—”

But it was already too late.

Charlie had entered the room.

The air shifted instantly, as though his presence alone commanded the space. His expensive black coat was soaked from the rain, his dark eyes blazing with anger, and his hands were clenched so tightly that the veins stood out beneath his skin.

When his gaze landed on Evelyn, it was filled with nothing but disgust. “Charlie…” she whispered weakly.

His expression hardened further. “Amelia can’t feel her legs.”

The words hit Evelyn like a physical blow. For a moment, she forgot how to breathe. “What…?”

Charlie took a step closer, his voice dropping into something even colder. “She may never walk again.”

Evelyn stared at him, horror flooding her expression. “No… that’s not possible…”

“She said you caused the crash.”

Evelyn’s lips parted as the room suddenly felt unbearably cold. “That’s not true.”

Charlie let out a short, humorless laugh. “You expect me to believe you?”

His eyes burned with hatred, and somehow, that hurt far more than the pain tearing through her body. “You’ve hated her your whole life.”

Evelyn stared at him, stunned. “Hated her?”

“Don’t pretend,” he snapped. “You were always competing with her. Always bitter because everyone preferred Amelia.”

The words struck deep because they carried a cruel kind of truth: everyone did prefer Amelia. Their parents, their relatives, their friends, and Charlie most of all.

Amelia was everything warm and radiant.

Evelyn had always been the shadow beside her, quiet, overlooked, and easily forgotten, but she had never hated her, not once.

“No,” Evelyn said, her voice breaking. “Charlie, please listen.”

“I warned Amelia about you years ago,” he cut in coldly. “She was too kind to see what you really are.”

Something inside Evelyn cracked under the weight of his words, because once long ago, Charlie had looked at her differently before everything changed.

Before Amelia unknowingly took something that had never truly been hers, years ago, during a school trip, Charlie had fallen into an icy river. Panic broke out instantly. No one moved except Evelyn.

She had jumped in without thinking, fighting against the freezing current as she dragged him back to shore. She still remembered the way his hands trembled as he clung to hers afterward, the way he had looked at her as though she mattered.

But then Amelia arrived, and somehow, the story changed.

By the next morning, Charlie believed Amelia had saved him.

Evelyn never corrected him. At first, she thought the misunderstanding would fix itself. Later, she realized she didn’t want it to.

Because she saw the way Charlie looked at Amelia afterward—as if she were the center of his world.

And Evelyn…

Evelyn had never been chosen by anyone, so she stayed silent. It was the worst mistake of her life. “You should leave,” Evelyn whispered, her voice heavy with exhaustion.

Charlie looked down at her with open contempt. “You should pray Amelia walks again.”

Then he turned and walked out. And just like that, he left devastation behind him.

Three days later, the entire city was talking.

Amelia Hart, the beloved daughter of the Hart family, had been permanently paralyzed in a tragic accident allegedly caused by her jealous older sister.

The story spread like wildfire.

Social media tore Evelyn apart without mercy. Monster, attempted murderer, psychopath.

The messages flooded in endlessly, many of them wishing her dead. Evelyn stopped checking her phone after the first hundred.

But none of it hurt as much as her own family.

“You’ve ruined this family,” her father said coldly from across the dining table.

Her mother sat beside Amelia, clutching her hand as she cried openly. “How could you do this to your own sister?”

Evelyn said nothing because she understood now that no one wanted the truth.

Amelia sat near the window in her wheelchair, pale and fragile, looking every bit the perfect victim.

Charlie stood beside her like a guard, his presence protective and unwavering. “She should apologize,” he said flatly.

Evelyn slowly lifted her gaze.

Apologize?

For nearly dying?

For trying to save them both?

For simply existing?

“I already said it wasn’t my fault,” she replied quietly.

Amelia suddenly broke into tears. “I knew she hated me,” she sobbed. “But I never thought she wanted me crippled…”

Charlie immediately crouched beside her, his voice soft with concern. “It’s okay.”

Evelyn noticed the difference instantly.

He had never spoken to her like that.

“Say sorry!” their mother demanded, glaring at Evelyn with disgust.

Evelyn looked around the table, not a single person was on her side, and in that moment, something inside her shifted. This wasn’t temporary; no one would ever believe her.

“I don’t want to fight anymore,” Amelia said weakly, lowering her gaze. “I just… want my sister back.”

Evelyn almost laughed.

The performance was flawless. “You don’t deserve her forgiveness,” Charlie added coldly.

The silence that followed was thick and suffocating.

Slowly, Evelyn stood up. Pain shot through her injured shoulder, but she ignored it. “I’m tired,” she said quietly.

Her father slammed his hand against the table. “Sit down when I’m talking to you!”

But Evelyn kept walking. For once, she couldn’t force herself to stay.

Later that night, Evelyn stood alone on the balcony outside her room as rain poured endlessly over the city.

Her chest ached so deeply it felt difficult to breathe. From inside the house, she could hear laughter.

Charlie was still there.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

She remembered being fourteen, shivering beside a riverbank after saving his life. He had wrapped his jacket around her shoulders, his voice soft with gratitude. “You saved me.”

For one fleeting moment, she had believed someone had finally chosen her.

A sharp voice cut through her thoughts. “Still pretending to be the victim?”

Evelyn turned.

Amelia sat in the doorway in her wheelchair—but the tears and fragility from earlier were completely gone.

Her expression was calm, almost amused. “You shouldn’t be standing,” Evelyn said slowly.

Amelia smirked.

Then, with deliberate ease, she rose to her feet. Evelyn’s eyes widened in shock.

Amelia took one step.

Then another. “She said you may never walk again,” Evelyn whispered.

Amelia tilted her head slightly. “She lied.”

The world seemed to tilt. “You’re… faking it?”

“Not completely,” Amelia replied casually. “My legs were injured. Just not permanently.”

Evelyn stared at her, unable to recognize the person standing in front of her. “Why would you do this?”

Amelia stepped closer, and for the first time, there was nothing gentle about her. Only something cold, something dangerous. “Because people always choose me,” she said softly.

The words struck harder than any slap.

Amelia leaned in slightly. “And deep down, you know that’s true.”

Evelyn’s throat tightened. “You’re lying to him.”

Amelia shrugged. “So?”

A cruel smile curved her lips. “He loves me.”

She glanced toward the sound of Charlie’s voice downstairs. “And after this?” she added quietly, “he’ll hate you forever.”

A chill ran down Evelyn’s spine because in that moment, she understood the truth.

Amelia wasn’t afraid of losing Charlie.

She was afraid of Evelyn having even the smallest piece of him.

Amelia stepped back and lowered herself into the wheelchair again. Before leaving, she gave Evelyn one final look. “Oh, and if you tell anyone,” she said lightly, “no one will believe you anyway.”

Then she wheeled herself away.

Evelyn remained frozen beneath the storm, completely alone, and for the first time in her life, she was truly afraid of her own sister.
