Ann’s POV

“I want a divorce,” Jake said in a cold tone, his eyes looking intently at me.

“Wha….what?” I stuttered, shocked as I gave him a look of confusion.

I couldn't understand where this was coming from.

The smile I had earlier when I heard him come inside our home faltered immediately.

“Yes,Ann. I need a divorce,” Jake said again as he threw a brown envelope at me.

I didn't catch it. I let it fall to the ground as I stared at my husband of five years. I couldn't even seem to understand what exactly had gone wrong suddenly today.

“Jake? Please let's talk,” I said to him as I stepped closer but he took some steps backward making me stop in shock.

He didn't even want me close to him. What could I possibly have done wrong?

“Please Jake, you need to tell me what exactly is wrong. You can't just tell me you want a divorce out of the blue,” I said,my voice still low even though it felt like my heart was being pierced slowly with a sharp knife.

This was something I had feared the most and this was exactly why I had been trying my best to keep our marriage. I had even given up on my profession two years ago just because Jake had asked me to.

News of Divorce had been rampant for some years now and I never for once thought I would be in such a situation right now.

I looked at my husband again and could see with his face set on a hard line, he meant what he had just uttered.

“We don't need to remain in a loveless marriage Ann. You and I know things aren't working out anymore.” Jake said and stepped forward to a cupboard in the kitchen where we kept strong gins.

I guess he needed it after dropping this bomb.

I walked closer once more to him and this time he didn't step away but when my hands met his, he flinched. I froze once again as pain coursed through my heart.

Had we gotten to this point? That I didn't even realize it?

“But…I… I love you Jake. Why are you doing this?” I asked him, my lips quivering now as I felt a tightening in my throat. I tried to calm myself. This wasn't the time to be a crybaby.

Jake stepped away from my touch as he opened the cupboard and took out a strong gin and poured himself a glass.

“Have you thought things through?” I asked him as I looked at him with teary eyes now.

Jake gave me a long look then gulped down all the contents in his glass before answering.

“I don't love you anymore Ann,” Jake said again to me in a cold tone. His eyes didn't even speak otherwise as I searched them.

“Why? How?” I asked as I started feeling lost. It felt like my whole world was about to crumble at my feet.

“It happens, Ann. It happens.” Jake said dryly as he turned himself another glass of dry gin.

“You found someone else?” The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them.

He suddenly threw me a dark look over the rim of his glass.

“Is that how you feel?” 

“I mean you can't just come back for a week’s trip with divorce papers. What do you want me to think?” I asked him, looking horrified at the expression he was giving me.

Jake gave off a cold laugh and that was when it hit me. He probably had been out of late these past months because he really had a woman somewhere.

“Think whatever you want. I do not love you again Ann. The sooner you understand this the better for both of us.” Jake said and carried his briefcase as he gradually moved upstairs with me staring up after him.

I stood still but didn't even know how long I was there, feeling dazed.

Then I went upstairs to find out that he was taking his bath. I waited patiently. 

A lot of questions were on my lips and I was on the verge of tears but I understood fully well that I needed to be strong. 

My mom’s words came playing once more in my head,

You don't ever cry for a man, Ann. Don't ever give them that liberty.

I sniffed and looked up trying to calm myself and swallow the tears trying their best to spill.

The shower finally got turned off and I heard the bathroom door open. Jake stepped out and even with what had happened a few minutes ago. I gasped.

My husband was still looking hot as ever with the towel just covering the lower part of his body. His abs were clearly in my view and his wet hair just gave him that Greek god look.

My breath began coming out in shallow gasps, I had imagined and dreamed about this night and this was the part I had been fantasizing for days while Jake was away on his business trips.

Jake must have seen how I looked at him lustfully because he smirked at me and went into the closet.

I wet my lips and followed him. I wasn’t so sure why I was following him but my legs just kept on moving on its own accord.

“What do you want from me,Ann?” Jake asked, irritation filling his voice.

“Don't you feel anything at all, Jake?” I asked, my voice quivering.

I mean we have been married for years now and the sex life had been good or had I been the only one who had felt that way?

I closed the distance between us and before I could stop myself I was pressing my body towards his.

Jake just stood still and wasn’t even wavering. He just kept on giving me a cold stare.

I wasn't going to back down now. Maybe after a good sex tonight, we would make up. I mean it is normal for couples to fight and make up.

I stepped backward, loosed my nightgown and let it fall to the ground, my eyes not leaving Jake’s.
