LOGINKehlani’s POV
Blood; that was the first thing I saw.
It was thick, dark and was splattered across a white surface that should not have been stained.
My heart was pounding so loudly in my chest that I could hear it echo in my skull.
I tried to move, tried to scream too but my body was frozen. It was trapped in a nightmare that refused to release me.
The moment Chase turned around to face me, I jolted awake with a violent gasp, my body jerking upright as if I had been yanked back from the edge of death.
My chest was heaving and my lungs burned as I sucked in air like I had been drowning.
My hair which was now damp with sweat clung to my face and my hands were shaking uncontrollably.
“God… no, no, no…” I whispered, my voice cracked and hoarse.
My eyes darted around the unfamiliar room, panic setting in almost immediately. The walls were dark, sleek, and expensive.
This was not my apartment, nor was it a hospital. The bed beneath me was massive, the sheets were soft and luxurious too.
Then my gaze landed on him.
Chase Ledger.
He was sitting on a chair across the room with one leg crossed over the other. His posture was relaxed in a way that made my stomach drop.
His presence alone sucked the air out of the room.
At first glance, I thought he was asleep but he wasn’t, instead he was watching me like I was an art piece in an exhibit.
Almost at once, the memories came crashing back. It was sharp and unforgiving.
“Oh God,” I whimpered with my heart in my mouth.
Before I could think, before I could stop myself, I slid off the bed and dropped to my knees on the cold floor.
“Please,” I cried, my hands clasped together as tears streamed down my face. “Please, I won’t say anything. I swear. I didn’t see anything, I didn’t…”
My voice broke into sobs as fear took complete control of me.
“Please don’t kill me,” I begged, bowing my head. “I’ll do anything, anything you want. I have a family, I…”
I didn't get to finish speaking because the door flung open with a loud bang.
Terrified, I screamed again, the sound ripping out of my throat as my body jolted in terror.
Heavy footsteps made their way into the room in a slow and deliberate manner. Mustering a bit of courage, I lifted my head, my vision blurry with tears.
The man who had walked in was built like a wall. He had broad shoulders, thick arms and a face that looked like it was carved from stone.
His eyes were cold and assessing, as they lingered on me kneeling on the floor begging for my life.
He said nothing at first, he just looked at me then his gaze shifted to Chase.
“What should I do with her?” the man asked calmly, as if he was asking what to do with an unwanted piece of trash.
Blinking rapidly, my heart slammed violently against my ribs.
Still reeling with fear, I turned to Chase, desperation burning through me. “Please,” I whispered. “Please…”
Chase didn’t respond. His face remained unreadable and the silence he had chosen was more terrifying than any shouted threat.
The man sighed then reached inside his jacket.
My breath caught in my throat as he pulled out a gun.
“No,” I choked out.
The black metal gleamed under the low lights of the room as he lifted it with practiced ease.
Rubbing my palms together desperately, I sobbed, crawling backward on my knees, my kneecaps scraping painfully against the floor.
“Please!” I screamed. “Please, I didn’t mean to…”
The click of the safety being released was deafening.
Not showing any emotion, he raised the gun, aiming it directly at me.
With my life now flashing in front of me, I squeezed my eyes shut, my entire body shaking violently.
This is it, this is how I'm going to die. – I thought, already moving my lips as I muttered my last prayer.
“Enough.”
Chase’s voice cut through the room like a blade.
My eyes flew open just in time to see him rise from his seat in one smooth movement. He crossed the distance between them in seconds, his hand shooting out to clamp around the man’s wrist.
“Lower it,” Chase said, his tone calm but lethal.
The man frowned slightly. “She saw…” He tried to argue but Chase didn’t allow him to finish.
“I said lower it.” He repeated, his hand still resting on his wrist.
The man hesitated, then slowly lowered the gun. Chase didn’t release him until the weapon was pointed at the floor.
A breath I didn’t realize I was holding rushed out of me in a shaky exhale. Relief flooded my chest so fast that it almost made me dizzy.
“She stays,” Chase said after what seemed like forever.
The man studied Chase’s face for a long moment before nodding. “Well…” He scoffed.
He glanced at me once more, his eyes devoid of sympathy, then turned and left the room.
The silence that followed was unbearable.
With my heart now in my mouth, I crawled forward, my hands pressing against the floor as I sobbed in relief.
My entire body was trembling but that was the least of my concern. I was alive and that was all that matters.
“Thank you,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “Thank you so much. I won’t tell anyone. I promise. I swear on my life…” I trailed off the moment Chase took a step towards me.
I felt him before I saw him.
His presence loomed over me, his shadow swallowing my small and shaking form.
Before I realized what was happening, he suddenly grabbed my chin, his fingers digging into my skin as he forced my head up.
I gasped, my tear-filled eyes locking onto his.
They were dark, cold and unforgiving.
His face was inches from mine and his grip was firm and unyielding. I could see every sharp line of his features.
He didn’t look like a man who had just spared a life. He looked like a predator deciding how long to let his prey live.
“You’re mistaken if you think this is mercy,” he said quietly.
My lips trembled as I forced the words out. “I… I know. I’m grateful. I…”
His grip tightened, cutting off my words.
“Listen carefully, Kehlani,” he said, his voice low and dangerous.
“What you saw never leaves this room. Am I understood?” He asked through his teeth.
Desperate for freedom, I nodded frantically. “I understand. I promise…”
His eyes hardened further.
“If a single word gets out,” he said slowly, each syllable deliberate and heavy, “I will kill you myself.”
Kehlani's POVGet in. – I repeated in my head, staring at him like he had lost his mind. His voice wasn’t sharp when asked me to. It wasn’t like a command thrown like a dagger. Instead, it was calm, controlled and almost neutral.“I called a cab,” I said, lifting my chin slightly. “It’s on the way.”Leaning forward slightly, he held my gaze for a second longer than necessary then, instead of driving off like I expected, he turned the key and shut off the engine. The sudden quiet between us felt deliberate and before I could say a word, he said, “I’ll wait.”My stomach flipped. Wait?“You don’t have to,” I replied, shifting my weight awkwardly on the sidewalk.“It's my choice.” He replied and that was it.Pushing his hand into his hair, he leaned back slightly in his seat and folded one hand loosely over the steering wheel, settling in like he had nowhere else to be.Rolling my eyes, I turned away from him and started fumbling with my phone. I wanted to pretend I was checking the ri
Kehlani’s POVThe moment I shut my office door, the tears came running down my cheeks in torrents. Snapping my eyes shut, I placed my back against the cold wall, allowing the cold to sip into my body to ground me. My sobs were not loud or dramatic. It was silent, burning streaks sliding down my cheeks as I leaned my forehead against the wood and breathed through the ache in my chest. My hands were shaking, my throat was tight and my head was pounding like I had been screaming for hours.Pull yourself together.I pushed away from the wall and stumbled toward my desk. My reflection in the dark computer screen looked wrecked. My eyes were red, I had blotchy cheeks and my mascara was threatening to betray me.I reached up to wipe my eyes again. I was impatient and rough and that cost me.Something wasn’t right. My vision blurred suddenly in one eye, the world tilting just slightly out of focus. Panic flared up my chest as I blinked rapidly.“No, no, no,” I muttered. With my heart in
Kehlani’s POVFor the first time in what felt like forever, I was laughing.Real laughter, not the polite, careful kind I had mastered at work, but the kind that bubbled up unexpectedly and made my cheeks ache. The restaurant buzzed with noise, glasses clinking, cutlery scraping softly against plates and conversations overlapping in a way that felt warm instead of overwhelming.I hadn’t realized how much I needed this.Manny was in the middle of a ridiculous story about a client who had once sent an email meant for his mistress to the entire department. Eliana was laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes.“No,” I said between laughs. “That cannot be real.”“It is,” Manny insisted. “HR had to step in. It was pure chaos.”I shook my head, smiling despite myself. For a moment, I forgot about work, cold stares, and the constant knot of fear that had taken residence in my chest. Then my phone buzzed.I glanced down at it casually, expecting a random notification or a group message fro
Kehlani’s POVIt had been a week.Seven whole days since the worst night of my life, and somehow, miraculously, I was still sane. The only reason I hadn’t completely unraveled was simple; Chase Ledger hadn’t been in the office since that day. He had left town almost immediately, and the building had felt lighter without him. Despite his absence, it was still intimidating and tense but not suffocating.Distance was a gift I didn’t take lightly. As usual that evening, I sat alone in my office, the glow of my computer screen casting pale light across the desk as my fingers flew over the keyboard. Numbers blurred together after a while, but I forced myself to stay focused. Every report I completed and every email I sent, felt like proof that I could still function and that fear hadn’t completely broken me.Chase and I hadn’t spoken since that night. Everything went through email and I preferred it that way.I hit send on the final report and leaned back in my chair, rolling my stiff
Chase’s POVThe house felt louder than usual the moment I walked in. Not because of noise but because of tension. The large living room was lit only by the glow of the television, flashes of blue and red reflecting off the glass walls. Thiago, my best friend, was sprawled on the couch with a controller in hand, fully immersed in whatever game he was playing. His fingers moved fast and precise, like muscle memory had taken over.Adrian, on the other hand, was pacing back and forth like his worry was going to solve whatever issue he had. His footsteps cut sharply against the marble floor, the sound scraping against my already frayed nerves. He ran his hand through his hair repeatedly, his jaw clenched so tight I could see the muscle ticking.Sucking my teeth, I shoved a hand up my head using the other to loosen my tie.Neither of them spoke at first.I crossed the room and dropped into the couch beside Thiago, leaning back and staring at the screen without really seeing it. Explosi
Kehlani’s POVMy hand fell away from my ear slowly, like the phone had suddenly become too heavy to hold.Chase’s voice still echoed in my head as I stared blankly at the wall in front of me. For a second, I wondered if my mind had finally snapped and now fear had decided to give me auditory hallucinations just to finish the job. That wasn’t possible.Clenching my hand by my side, I swallowed hard, my throat dry, and slid off the bed. My legs felt weak and unsteady, but they carried me forward anyway. I didn’t say anything to Ashley, I didn’t even look at her. I just moved like I was on autopilot mode. Each step toward the door felt like I was walking straight into an execution. This is my private line. – The thought screamed in my head. I had never given this number to anyone at work. I had barely given it to anyone at all. Yet somehow, Chase Ledger had it. And now, he claimed he was standing outside my apartment like he belonged there. When I got to the door, I pressed my eye
